The Department of History offers courses leading to M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D Degrees. Its
teaching programme is designed to provide students with a broad overview of world history
narrowing down to focus on the history of India with special emphasis on socio-economic and
cultural history.
At the research level the Department’s primary focus is on the socio-economic and cultural
history of the Deccan region. At the same time, an in-depth study of the linkages (socio-cultural
and economic) of the Deccan region with other Indian regions and the outside world is also
attempted. There is a twofold aim of all research activities in the Department. a) Widening the
database in its studies of local and regional history and b) introducing an inter-disciplinary
approach to understand the underlying social and economic realities of the history of the Deccan
through the ages.

About the Workshop

The workshop would acquaint the participants with the latest cutting-edge academic
developments within the trends in historical research, for both the pre-modern and the modern
periods. Primarily the focus of the workshop would be on Indian history, but there would also be
some contextual references to non-Indian histories.

The workshop would enable participants to formulate questions on their research data. Further,
the workshop aims to enhance their data-organizational skills so that they can tackle research
papers and dissertations confidently. The write-up of research methodology, setting out
arguments and frameworks of analysis, the proper use of endnotes and footnotes which will
corroborate facts in the text, are all necessary for effective use of research methodologies. There
will also be clear inputs as to what should be included in associated sections such as
introductions and literature reviews. Participants should also, by the end of the workshop, have
developed a sense of how to review and critique their own work.

Other social science disciplines and their subject-specific methodologies would be referred to in
order to demonstrate how historical inquiries use different methodological approaches. The
workshop will be structured as an intensive mix of lectures, presentation of seminar papers by
participants, panel discussions, and the imparting of some essential soft-ware skills – e.g. power
–point presentations and the like. The work shop will have resource persons drawn from the
University of Hyderabad and some well known historians from other Indian Universities.
Prospective participants are required to note that as per the latest UGC guide-lines (2010),
subject-oriented workshops of 2-3 weeks duration are to be considered equivalent to a Refresher
Course.

Eligibility for the Course:

Young and mid-career academicians from Social Science disciplines of Central and State
Universities and Colleges of Southern states (AP, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu & Union
Territories).

Financial Assistance:
Outstation Participants may be paid III AC railway fare (all trains) or A/C deluxe bus fare on
production of to and fro tickets in original. Reimbursement will be restricted to shortest route.
Candidates will be provided accommodation in the University guest house and also eligible for
TA and DA as per UGC rules.
