P rof. Dr. Khawaja Amjad Saeed, is a

well known scholar and a prominent
figure in Management, Commerce, Banking,
Financial Sector and Accounting profession.
He is a prolific writer on the subjects of
Accountancy, Taxation, Economy, Business

Law and Management. He has richly

contributed in these areas and requires no
introduction. He has authored many books
on the diverse subjects in the context of
present and emerging scenarios. In
addition, a large number of his articles on
various economic issues have appeared in
the National and International Press. He
has also participated in the discussions on
important issues on electronic media, i.e.
Radio and Television in Pakistan and
abroad.
The book under review is an updated and
revised edition of “Economy of Pakistan”
authored by him. Earlier edition of this
book had appeared in 2005 and was well
received by the readers. The author has
now updated the book in the light of
current data published in the Pakistan
Economic Survey 2004-2005, State Bank of
Pakistan Annual Report 2004-05, World
Development Report 2006 and related
material and the book is thus based on all
important data relating to the economy of
our country.
For the last few years, it appears that the
importance of economy is growing and
students of the economy find books and
literature on the subject with certain depth
and concrete study of the issues. Many
books have been written and compiled with
serious treatment and discussion on the
economic trends in Pakistan. However the
present edition is the latest one released in
2006. The Economy of Pakistan authored by
Prof. Dr. Khawaja Amjad Saeed, is one of
important publications on the subject and
it is a very comprehensive document on the
study of Pakistan’s economy. The
voluminous book containing 484 pages
covers nearly all aspects of economy with
facts and figures and comments which are
very valuable in shaping the economic
planning of the country. The book under
review consists of three parts. The first
part deals with economic framework which
sheds light on existing macroeconomic
performance in the domain of agriculture,
manufacture, balance of payment and
infrastructure. The second part extensively
covers the planning and policy aspects in
relation to investment, commercial policy,
monetary and fiscal policy, manpower and
economic packages. The third part
comprises of suggestions, recommendations
and strategies for economic rehabilitation
and guidelines for future course of
economy for the new millennium. It is
heartening to know that the author has
taken great pain in bringing almost all
subjects related to the economy of
Pakistan supported by relevant charts,
graphs and tables incorporating statistical
figures form the reports of State Bank of
Pakistan, Economic Surveys of Pakistan and
other authoritative works and publications
which are directly concerned with the
economy of the country. Hence the book
has assumed the status of complete
document on the economic data of Pakistan
which is indispensable in the study of the
economy of the country for all those who
want an insight and information on the
subject.
The author has a firm grip on the economy
of Pakistan and has already earned a name
within the country and abroad for writing
on burning issues of economy with all
dexterity and lucidity of style at his
command. The latest revised book is by all
means a very valuable addition to economic
studies of Pakistan.
It is hoped that the book will benefit
persons in civil and military circles alike, as
well as business community, professionals
and students of commerce, economics,
business and public administration, CSS and
PCS, ICMAP, Chartered Accountancy,
Banking, Insurance and other professionals
and academic courses. Parliamentarians
will also stand updated about the socio-
economic aspects of Pakistan.
The author is congratulated for his
excellent contribution and we hope that he
will continue his job with zeal and vigor to
contribute literature for the benefits of
diversified class of readers who are
interested in the economic challenges
facing Pakistan.
