CHANDIGARH: The family members of five-year-old Khushpreet Singh alias Khushi, on
Thursday, recorded their statements before the inquiry officer, DSP (security) Kulwant Singh
Pannu.

Sources said members of the initial investigation team were not present when statements of
child's father, Lakhbir Singh, mother Kulwinder Kaur and uncle Sukhwinder Singh were
recorded. Pannu would be submitting a status report on the ongoing department probe against
cops to senior officials shortly. The report is to be filed before HC.

The boy was kidnapped on December 24 and his body was recovered from Phase X of Mohali on
January 5. A magisterial probe blamed three cops, inspectors Udaypal Singh and Narinder Singh

CHANDIGARH: Even as the Centre is examining a proposal to frame the country's first policy
to curb excessive use of antibiotics, the city has only one drug inspector to check malpractices
pertaining to sale of drugs. This will make it difficult to implement the proposed policy here.

The drug inspector's role is to supervise the standardization of pharmacist shops. This means that
he should keep a watch over irregularities in sale of drugs not meant for over the counter selling
or without the prescription of a registered medical practitioner. ''We have written to the UPSC
and for deputation of officials from Haryana and Punjab,'' said the director health services, UT,
Dr Chander Mohan.

The Delhi superbug brouhaha had compelled the health ministry to constitute a task force and
involve WHO in drafting a policy. Excessive use of antibiotics has been resulting in loss of
resistance. In February, a formal proposal to create India's first ever-antibiotic policy had been
submitted to the Union health ministry.

Under the draft policy, several drugs will now be sold only against prescription while others
would be available only for hospital use and not in pharmacies, said Dr Varsha Gupta,
department of microbiology, Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.

National professional officer, essential drugs and medicine, WHO, Dr Madhur Gupta said,
''There is no

antibiotic drug resistance data in the country and neither are the chemists following the drug
schedules. There is complete lack of surveillance.''

PANCHKULA: The racket of fake guarantors in the courts of Panchkula was exposed by alert
chief judicial magistrate (CJM) Gurvinder Kaur when her court staff handed over one such
person to police on Thursday.

Accused Naveen Kumar, a resident of Ropar, had visited Panchkula district courts on
Wednesday to give guarantee of Rajinder Kumar. Naveen had submitted a car registration
licence to the court as surety for the bail. CJM Gurvinder Kaur suspected something wrong and
directed the court staff to check RC from the previous records.

Sources said that CJM found that RC was used on earlier occasions as well. Cops registered a
forgery case against the accused. Sector-6 police post in charge Vikas Kumar said that Naveen
used to take Rs 500 to Rs 700 to appear as a fake guarantor. Cops produced the accused before
the Duty Magistrate who sent him to two-day police remand. Police took the accused to Ropar to
collect more evidence against him.
