Our story takes place in Israel,
around 900 B.C. Ahab was king
of Israel. He had married Jezebel
and adopted her vile religion of
Baalism, the worship of the
pagan Devil-god, Baal. Under
Ahab and Jezebel‟s wicked rule,
the prophets of the true God were
slaughtered, and Baalism became
the official state religion.
To show His displeasure, God
sent His prophet, Elijah, directly
to King Ahab with an ominous
message: “As the Lord lives,
there shall be no dew nor rain
these years, except at my word!”
After delivering this warning,
Elijah fled deep into the
wilderness where he hid from the
soldiers of Ahab. The Lord
directed him to an isolated
canyon where there was not only
a small stream for him to drink
from, but where he was
miraculously fed by ravens
whom God commanded to bring
pieces of bread and meat to him
every day.
Este relato se refiere a un hecho
acontecido en Israel, alrededor del
año 900 a.C. Acab era el rey de
Israel. Se había casado con
Jezabel and adoptó su vil religión,
el baalismo, que era el culto a
Baal, el dios pagano. Bajo el
malvado reinado de Acab y
Jezabel, los profetas del Dios
verdadero fueron masacrados, y el
baalismo se convirtió en la
religión oficial del Estado.
Con el objeto de hacer conocer Su
desagrado, Dios envió a Su
profeta Elías directamente a Acab
con un mensaje de advertencia: --
¡Vive el Señor, Dios de Israel, que
no habrá lluvia ni rocío en estos
años, sino por mi palabra!
Luego de dar aquella advertencia,
Elías huyó al desierto, donde se
ocultó de los soldados de Acab. El
Señor lo condujo a un cañón
solitario donde, además de correr
un pequeño arroyo del que podía
beber, fue alimentado
milagrosamente por unos cuervos
a quienes Dios ordenó que le
llevaran todos los días pequeños
trozos de pan y de carne.
Just as Elijah had prophesied,
not a drop of rain fell and a
severe drought began to grip the
land. Crops failed, water
supplies dried up and
severe famine set in. Soon
Elijah‟s own water source, the
Brook Cherith, dried up also.
But God is faithful, and on the
very day that the brook ran dry,
“the Word of the Lord came to
Elijah, saying, „Arise and go to
the town of Zarephath and live
there: For behold, I have
commanded a widow woman
there to take care of you!‟”
After days of trudging through
desert wastes, over rocky
hillsides and steep mountain
trails, he finally arrived at
Zarephath, a coastal city in
modern-day Lebanon. Weary,
hot and caked in dust, as he
approached the city gate he
spotted a woman gathering
sticks. “Water!” he cried out to
her, “please bring me some
water in a jar that I may drink!”
Tal como había profetizado el
profeta Elías, no cayó una gota de
lluvia y se produjo una severa
sequía en el país. Los cultivos y las
fuentes de agua se secaron y se
produjo una gran escasez. Al cabo
de poco tiempo, el arroyo Querib,
de donde sacaba agua Elías,
también se secó por completo.
Pero Dios es fiel, y el mismo día
que se secó el arroyo, «vino a Elías
Palabra del Señor diciendo: --
Levántate y vete a la ciudad de
Sarepta y mora allí. ¡He aquí, Yo
he dado orden allí a una mujer
viuda para que te sustente!»
Luego de un viaje de varios días
de penurias, en los que tuvo que
cruzar desiertos desolados,
peñascos rocosos y escarpados
desfiladeros de montaña,
finalmente llegó a Sarepta, una
ciudad costera en lo que es hoy
Líbano. Agotado, agobiado por el
calor y cubierto de polvo, llegó al
pórtico de la ciudad donde avistó a
una mujer que recogía ramas.
--¡Agua! --le gritó desesperado--.
¡Por favor, tráeme un jarro de agua
para beber!
 La mujer se compadeció de aquel

Because Elijah spoke to her with
such authority in the name of
the Lord, she knew that he must
be a man of God, a prophet, and
she believed the Word of the
Lord that he spoke. This dear
little widow therefore decided to
trust God and do as Elijah
instructed her. She hurried home
and scraped together the last tiny
handful of flour from the bottom
of the large clay jar that it was
kept in. She took her oil jug,
tipped it, and drained out the last
few drops of precious oil.
It was probably after she had
mixed the flour and oil together
into a paste and baked the little
piece of bread for Elijah, that she
received the surprise of her life:
Picture this lowly little widow,
tidying things up while the bread-
cake for Elijah was cooking. She
goes to put the empty oil jug in
its proper place, and suddenly
she notices it‟s much heavier
than it was a moment ago. Barely
tipping it, she can hardly believe
her eyes when fresh oil flows out
of it!—It is full!
Como Elías le había hablado con
tanta autoridad en el nombre del
Señor, ella sabía que debía de
tratarse de un hombre de fe, de
un profeta, y creyó que lo que él
le decía era Palabra del Señor.
Aquella pobre viuda decidió
confiar en el Señor y hacer lo que
Elías le pediá. Volvió
rápidamente a su casa y sacó el
último puñado de harina de la
tinaja en que la guardaba. Tomó
la vasija de aceite y vertió las
últimas gotas hasta dejarla
completamente vacía.
Después que hubo mezclado la
harina y el aceite, y hubo
amasado y horneado el trozo de
pan para Elías, quedó
absolutamente perpleja ante lo
que sucedió. Es de imaginarse la
escena. La pobre viuda ordenaba
las cosas mientras se horneaba el
pan para Elías. Al colocar en su
lugar la vasija de aceite vacía, de
pronto se dio cuenta de que
estaba mucho más pesada que un
rato antes. Al inclinarla, advirtió
estupefacta que salía de ella
aceite fresco. ¡Estaba llena!
