scheduled to present for the work. It is Unauthorized, Unexplained, avoidable

and willful absence from work.

The magnitude of absenteeism is universal fact and it differs from industry to

industry, place to place, occupation to occupation.

Types of Absenteeism

 Unauthorized Absenteeism

Authorized absenteeism means, obtaining leave with proper approval and prior

sanction from competent authority.

Unauthorized absence means remaining absent with out proper approval and

prior sanction of leave.

Calculation and Extent:

For calculating the rate of absenteeism two factors are taken in to consideration.

• The no.of persons scheduled to work.

• The no.of persons actually present.

Cause, Effects and Measures to tackle them:

Employees remain absent due to various reasons of which the genuine reasons

are:

• Sickness which contributes about 3% of the total percent of absenteeism

in the industrial sector in our country.

• Accidents 2% to 4%

Other reasons are:

• Industrial fatigue

• Alcoholism

• Indebtedness

• In adequate leave facilities

• Local festivals etc.,

The effect of absenteeism firstly reduces the income of the workmen on the

principle of “No work No Pay”. Consequently the loss is also to the employer both

in discipline and efficiency and thus the industry suffers due to loss of production

and income.

The absenteeism affects adversely both the employee and the worker and give

rise to many industrial unrest and labor problem. It also affects the attitude of the

workers towards industry and industrial life.

Important measures taken by the management are as follows:

• Encouraging good attendance through incentives schemes.

• Award linked with attendance.

• Counseling.

• Social counseling.

• Psychological counseling.

• HRD Programmes

• Through circulars.

• Review of absenteeism

• Involvement of union representatives.

• Guidelines for punishments

• Motivating the employees

• Conducting workshops.

• Monthly analysis of absenteeism

• Adoption of chronic absenteeism by executives.

Note: Actually, I gathered this material for my summer project – titled “evaluation

of training” and as per my schedule I include all other topics. So the absenteeism
