of Magic, The Lost Paradise, and The Garden of Eden a new

Participants will discover how to create programs that empower holistic practitioners. Educational applications
that demonstrate the re-discovery of the joy of healing will be explored. The impact of healing will be discussed
through the practitioners’ experiences and how it has affected nursing satisfaction and enhanced the patient’s
experience in the hospital.
Lourdes Lorenz is the Director of Integrative Healthcare at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North
Carolina. She has been an RN for almost 30 years with experience in critical care. Her exten-
sive leadership and administrative background served her in the development of the framework
for Integrative Healthcare at Mission Hospital. She promotes holistic nursing and lectures on
evidence-based, complementary modalities in Western North Carolina. Ms. Lorenz is the current
servant leader for the Blue Ridge Holistic Nurses Network of the AHNA. S
Kat Knihnicki is the Coordinator of Integrative Healthcare at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North
Carolina. She became a Registered Nurse in 1996. She worked at the bedside for 12 years with
the majority of her practice in critical care. In 2008 she completed her graduate education which
earned her a Doctorate in Spiritual Healing. Dr. Knihnicki is board certified in Holistic Nursing, has
a certification in Aromatherapy, and is currently a Healing Touch apprentice.
Denise Anthes is a Holistic Nurse Specialist at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. Ms.
Anthes is a Bachelor’s prepared nurse with an MBA who is currently a doctoral student. She has
served in various clinical and managerial roles in her 30+ year nursing career, including NICU,
L&D, hospice, and wound healing. She has served on the Nursing Faculty of AB Tech Community
College. Ms. Anthes is board certified as a Holistic Nurse. She is a Healing Touch Certified Prac-
titioner and Certified Instructor for Level 1 and 2 Healing Touch. She teaches a variety of holistic
classes in Western North Carolina, including Healing Touch at Mission Hospital.
Cindy Barkei is a Holistic Nurse Specialist at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. Ms.
Barkei has an extensive nursing background which includes critical care, medical cardiac step-
down, and general medicine, as well as management and administrative positions. In 1996, Ms.
Barkei was voted one of the “Great 100 Nurses in North Carolina.” She is board certified as a
Holistic Nurse, is a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner, and is certified in Aromatherapy. Holistic

I’ve yet to figure out the difference between a punt and a kick,

anomalies to me, but at least the related games make some
sense, unlike rugby, one of the preferred sports of my oldest
son’s. As far as I’m concerned, the rugby years yielded only
a by-name relationship with the emergency room doctor who
was, for some reason, the only one ever on duty when bring-
ing my son in for a multitude of broken, stretched, or injured
bones and muscles. I do not recall that number of muscular-
skeletal parts on any anatomical chart I studied in high school
biology. Not only did the injury rate suggest meaninglessness,
but I never could figure out why those teenage boys would sing
“Waltzing Matilda” to such gleeful abandon when all they did
at home was grunt. No, if there is anything that might connote
sameness, imbalance, and work to me, it is sports.
For all the work, tediousness, money, and time, however, it

has been worth it. Sports has meant something to my kids and
so, it has meant something to me. Sure, they have had fun,
but they have also developed qualities of meaning including
sportsmanship, the value of persistence, and the importance
of losing politely.
Perhaps all the sameness in my life—and yours—really is not.

Maybe it is all a way to show up for the meaning inherent in
each and every moment. Maybe today, as I dance around the

This excitement has spilled over to my husband who, wanting

ago. After the first class he was satisfied and felt he did not

to continue his journey. I love being able to talk to him about the
heart-filled classes and having this connection with my hubby.
One of the most recent heartwarming class moments came
during an Introduction to Healing Touch at a retirement home as
the residents were playing with their own energy and trying to
feel their partner’s. Many were smiling, others were concentrat-
ing, hoping to sense the pressure between their hands. Eyes

The Energy Ball is a wonderful tool for demonstrating how energy flows
through the body using simple conductivity. Simply touching the two contact
points completes the circuit of energy flowing in your body causing the
Energy Ball to light up and make a sound.
This demonstration works equally well with a group of people holding hands
to form a chain with two individuals each touching one of the contact points
