The Power Interface Adapter can be installed in any unit location. The
unit location 16 is recommended, since the PIA then takes only one unit
location. When installed elsewhere it takes two unit locations.

The AC/DC Power Interface Adapter can be installed in any unit location
with the exception of unit location 16, for which it is too wide. The AC/
DCĆPIA takes two unit locations.

The ringing generator can be installed in any other unit location but not
in locations 1 and 10. Unit location 16 is recommended, since it then
takes only one unit location. When installed elsewhere it takes two unit
locations.

Equipping Restriction

If the flat cable connectors are in use, there are some restrictions to
equipping. For further instructions, see the appended recommendation

2.1 Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) signifies the ability of equipment
or systems to operate in their environment without suffering or causing
unacceptable degradation of performance to other equipment or systems
as a result of electromagnetic radiation.

In telecommunications equipment manufactured by Nokia, the EMC

requirements are taken into consideration in accordance with the
national and certain European standards. The telecommunications
equipment properly installed, used and maintained fulfil the Nokia EMC
specifications provided that the equipping is performed using products
conforming to the TM4ĆEMC Construction Practice.

The electromagnetic compatibility of the equipment and system must be

taken into consideration when the system is planned, since the equipping
is an essential part of the entire system.

Subrack 19" (EMC) and the products mentioned with it in the product list
are suited for installations complying with the EMC specifications. The
subrack protects the plugĆin units against incident EMI and ESD interferĆ
ence and prevents the equipment itself from emitting radiation to the
environment.

The EMC subrack is provided with a double casing. In addition, the signal
cables routed within the subrack, excluding the optical cables, are
grounded to the subrack grounding assemblies. The power supply and
rack alarm buses penetrating the casing are routed via filters.

3 CABLING
Screened installation and coaxial cables are used in EMC subracks. Also
the power supply lines and the alarm cabling must be screened.

4 POWER SUPPLY
The interface point for the battery voltages, the ringing and criterion voltĆ
ages and the alarms can be either a 19" Power Supply Adapter (PSA 19"),
a Power Interface Adapter (PIA) or an AC/DC Power Interface Adapter
(AC/DCĆPIA).

The Power Supply Adapter 19" can feed several subracks, whereas the
Power Interface Adapter and the AC/DC Power Interface Adapter can
feed only the subrack into which it has been installed.
SUBRACK 19" (EMC) and SUBRACK 19" TF 21090.**
General Description I
25.03.1996 Page 10

4.1 Power Supply Adapter 19", 1 U (PSA 19")

The PSA 19" is installed in the same rack as the subrack. One adapter can
feed several subracks with the total current consumption of less than 12 A.
The current consumption is calculated by dividing the power consumpĆ
tion of the units by the minimum supply voltage value.

Imax = SP
Umin

SP = total power consumption Umin = minimum (constant)

of equipment supply voltage

The unit power supplies function down to 20 V input voltage. If the

minimum supply voltage is not known, the value 20 V shall be used.

The Power Supply Adapter is connected to the equipment subracks by flat

cable buses A and B. Bus A provides the power supply and alarm lines,
and bus B provides the lines for the criterion and ringing voltages.

Normally, one subrack is fed by one A and one B bus, but if required,
e.g. for protection, the power supply to the subrack can be divided.
In such a case, another pair of flat cable buses A and B are required for
feeding the other half of the subrack.

The Power Supply Adapter is provided with interfaces for six A and B
buses. For each flat cable bus A, an overcurrent protection switch is
needed. The switches come in two sizes, 2 A and 5 A. Selection of the
switch depends on the maximum current consumption:

Imax = SPk
Umin

SPk = power fed via the switch Umin = lowest (momentary)

supply voltage

If the Umin is not known, the value 15 V shall be used. The size of the
switch selected shall be w Imax.

The same Power Supply Adapter type is suited for all subrack types,
including the EMC subracks.
SUBRACK 19" (EMC) and SUBRACK 19" TF 21090.**
General Description I
25.03.1996 Page 11

4.2 Power Interface Adapter (PIA) and

AC/DC Power Interface Adapter (AC/DCĆPIA)
The PIA or the AC/DCĆPIA is installed in the same subrack as the teleĆ
communications units. Several units can be used in the subrack, if the
power supply circuitry of the subrack has been divided.

4.2.1 Power Interface Adapter PIA

The use of PIA depends on the current it feeds to the equipment. The
current is calculated by dividing the total power to be fed by the minimum
supply voltage value.

Imax = SP
Umin

SP = power to be fed Umin = minimum (momentary)

supply voltage

If the Umin is not known, the value 15 V shall be used.

If the current consumption is less than 2.0 A, the unit can be inserted into
any unit location. The power supply from the unit to the subrack is then
routed via the back connector and the motherboard.

When the current consumption exceeds 2.0 A, separate flat cable buses A
and B (TV 21642.01 and 21642.02) are required to be connected from the
PIA to the power supply connectors on the motherboard. In such a case,
the unit must be inserted into unit location 1 or 10.

If the current is w 5 A, the power supply circuit of the subrack shall be

divided into sections and two PIA units shall be used.

In EMC subracks, an EMC shielded Power Interface Adapter must be

used. In addition, all power supply and alarm interfaces entering the
EMC PIA from the outside of the subrack must be protected by using a
Power Supply Line TV 21634.

4.2.2 AC/DC Power Interface Adapter AC/DCĆPIA

The AC/DCĆPIA can be installed in any unit location. It provides a 54.0 V
voltage (adjustable), and the maximum power is 80 W.

1 INSTALLATION PLANNING
Before starting the installation, an installation plan is drawn up according
to the instructions given in this description, in the operating instructions
of the PSA, PIA or the AC/DCĆPIA and in the operating handbooks for
the equipment to be installed. Unit locations and detailed cabling inforĆ
mation for the units are specified in the plan. When an EMC subrack is
used, also the grounding of cables is indicated. The appended installation
plan form may be of use in planning.

1.1 Equipping
If there are several subracks on top of each other, it is advisable to start
the installation from the lowermost subrack. Note that a cabling space of
0.5 U is required above and below the Subrack 19".

6 EQUIPPING AND CABLING

Recommendations on cables, connectors and marking of cabling, as
well as work instructions on connection of cables onto connectors are
appended. In addition to these, also the unitĆspecific connection instrucĆ
tions for the equipment to be installed are required.

The cabling is performed in the following order:

h Route and mark the signal cables

Mark both ends of the cables with wire marks. The marking instructions
for the TM4 rack are applicable here.

h Mount connectors onto the signal cables

Since the plugĆin units often contain components sensitive to static elecĆ
tricity, cabling cards are used instead or actual units when connecting the
connectors.

Insert the cabling card into the unit location, define the exact dimensions
of the cables and mount the connectors onto them following the unitĆasĆ
sociated connection instructions.

The cable is connected at its proper location on the cabling card and the
cable is bended to a suitable form so that there is no excess length between
the unit connector and the grounding plate. The grounding points are
marked with a pen on the cable sheath.

A grounding protective sleeve can be used on top of the aluminum foil in

cables which must be disconnected and reconnected frequently to make
sure that the EMC protection stays intact (Figure 25).

NOTE The dimension between the grounding plate and the unit
connector must be exact (max. +5 mm of extra length), for
otherwise the connector may not remain in place or handling
of adjacent units may become difficult.

Disconnect the cable from the cabling card.

Strip the sheath only at the grounding point. Begin by making transverse
incisions at the marked places without cutting all the way through the
outer insulation of the cable. Then join the transverse incisions by a longiĆ
tudinal incision which shall cut through the outer insulation but not
damage the inner parts of the cable. The needed length of outer insulaĆ
tion is now easily removed by grabbing the edge of the longitudinal
incision and turning it around the cable. Depending on the structure of
the cable, the protective metal layer may be under a protective band
which must also be removed.

Ground the cables by fastening them with cable ties to the grounding
plates with their conductive grounding sheath and/or grounding conducĆ
tor attached to the EMC gasket. The lock of the cable tie is placed on the
side of the cable. See Figure 24.

The Power Supply Adapter 19" (PSA 19") serves as an interface point for
battery, criterion and ringing voltages and for alarms when telecommuniĆ
cations equipment of the Nokia ND generation are installed e.g. in 19"
subracks and 19" mounting frames.

The unit is shielded against electromagnetic interference and is therefore

well suited also for installations complying with EMC specifications.

TV21660 and TV21660.09 are basic units while TV21660.01 is provided

with an Enhanced Transient Protection (ETP) Unit containing storage
capacitors. The basic units can be upgraded to TV21660.01 with the
Upgrade Kit TV21662

The PSA can be mounted directly into a 19" rack, and on the wall, in a
TM4 rack row or in an M80 rack by means of mounting accessories.

The power supply adapter is connected to equipment subracks by flat

cable buses A and B. Bus A provides the power supply and alarm lines and
bus B provides the lines for the criterion and ringing voltages. In addition
to the flat cables, overcurrent protection switches are also required. The
switches are available in two alternative sizes, 2 A and 5 A. The usage and
number of flat cables and protection switches is applicationĆspecific and
they must be chosen separately in accordance with the need. The selecĆ
tion criteria are described in Chapter 2.5.

1 CONSTRUCTION
The main parts of the PSA are:

h a body with printedĆcircuit boards and a mounting plate for the

switches fastened to it

h a detachable front panel

h mounting brackets for installation.

The body, suspended on slide rails, can be moved in the mounting

brackets. This allows installation of the cables with the adapter mounted
into the rack. The height of the unit is 1 U (44.45 mm). The unit can be
moved in the vertical direction by 0.5 U steps.

The power supply adapter is installed on top of the equipment subracks.

The installation density depends on the dissipation power of the equipĆ
ment subracks and on the available space. The flat cables are so dimenĆ
sioned that the maximum height for the installation spaces between the
equipment subracks and between the uppermost subrack and the Power
Supply Adapter is 3 U.

It is recommended that the central battery voltages be connected from a
distributing cabinet or from a distribution line with both the positive and
the negative voltage brought by separate cables. The positive voltage is
grounded only at the battery. The recommended resistance for the supply
line is >50 mohms.

Table 1 presents some battery supply line alternatives. Restrictions due to

possible thermal loads have been disregarded.

2.2.3 Criterion voltages

Two external criterion voltages, B1 and B2, can be fed via one PSA.
The ground potential of the voltages is connected to the positive battery
voltage. The criterion voltages can also be generated from the central
battery voltages. The connection is made using the shorting jumpers of
connectors J34 and J35. The criterion voltage lines are provided with
6.3 A slow fuses complying with the IEC 127 standard. Figures 7 and 8
give examples on different connections for the criterion voltages.

2.2.4 Ringing voltages

The PSA includes two ringing voltage lines, RG1 and RG2, via which
external ringing voltages can be connected to the system. The ringing
voltage lines can be protected against voltage transients by mounting
varistor PR7 on the location reserved for it on the component board
(see Figure 5). The ringing voltage circuit can be divided into three
sections by means of terminal blocks NR36 and NR37, which allows the
use of several ringing generators in the same system. The ringing voltage
lines are provided with 0.63 A slow fuses complying with the IEC 127.
Figures 7 and 8 give examples on different connections.

2.2.5 Backup battery voltage

A separate backup battery is used when the operation of the alarm
circuits is to be secured should the central battery supply become
damaged. The backup battery voltage is brought to the PSA with separate
cables. The backup battery voltage feeds only the power supply of the
PSA. Due to small current consumption, the separate backup battery
voltage can be wired directly from one PSA to another.

If no separate backup battery voltage is wanted, the supply voltage for the
power supply must be taken from the central battery voltages by shorting
the connectors J36 and J37.

Figures 7 and 8 give examples on different backup battery connections.

2.3 Grounding
The PSA must always be grounded to the rack or station ground with a
separate copper wire with a minimum crossĆsectional area of 2.5 mm2.
The grounding connector is located at the right end of the rack body.

2.4 Connectors for charging Service Terminal battery

The Service Terminal can be connected directly to connector P32, the pin
a3 of which contains the positive battery voltage and the pin c3 the negaĆ
tive battery voltage. The voltage can also be wired to other parts of the
rack from connector J33, the pin 1 of which contains the positive voltage
and the pin 2 the negative voltage. The connectors are protected with a
1 A slow fuse F5 at the negative line.

2.5 Switches
The PSA 19" is provided with locations for a maximum of six overcurrent
protection switches which allows the battery voltage to be connected to six
flat cable buses. The switches are selected in accordance with the maxiĆ
mum current consumption:

Imax = SPk
Umin

SPk = power fed via switch Umin = lowest (momentary) supply

voltage

If the value Umin is not known, the value 15 V shall be used. The size of the
switch to be selected shall be > Imax.

Typically, the power required by the equipment of one subrack is so great

that each subrack requires a 5 A switch of its own as well as individual flat
cable buses. If the current consumption exceeds 5 A, the power supply
circuitry of the subrack must be divided and power supply to both circuits
must be brought separately via their own switches and flat cables.

The maximum load connected via one PSA is 12 A.

The protection switches are mounted on a mounting plate in the body so

that the switch is closed when the contact is on the left when seen from the
front of the unit. The wires from the switches are taken to the PCB and
brought to the connectors beside the corresponding flat cable bus. The
required connection cables and parts are delivered with the switch.

2.6 Flat cable buses

2.6.1 Use of flat cables and shielding of connectors

Flat cable buses A1...A6 are 10Ćpole cables which include three
connectors for connecting the PSA to the equipment subrack and one
connector for the power supply unit. One cable is usually used for one
equipment subrack. A suitable connector is selected of the flat cable to
the subrack and the unnecessary part of the cable is cut off. The end
connector shield must be removed to the last connector of the cable. If the
cable includes unused connectors, they must be shielded with connector
shields that are delivered with the cable.

2.6.3 4Ćpole flat cable bus B1...B6

Flat cable buses B1...B6 are 4Ćpole connectorized cables. The cables
transfer the ringing and criterion voltages required in signalling equipĆ
ment use to the telecommunications units. One cable can be used for
connection to a maximum of three subracks, although it is recommended
that each subrack has its own cable.

Pin configuration of the cable:

1 B2 criterion voltage 2
2 B1 criterion voltage 1
3 RG2 ringing voltage 2
4 RG1 ringing voltage 1

2.7 Enhanced Transient Protection (TV21660.01)

The ETP Unit is located behind the switches on its own component board.
It is attached to the body by means of a detachable heatsink, to which also
the separation diodes are attached.

The ETP circuitry is used for establishing a lowĆimpedance contact

between the negative central battery voltage and the negative poles of the
electrolytic energy storage capacitors on the auxiliary component board.
This absorbs the high transients possibly encountered at the input and staĆ
bilizes the output battery voltage for the unit power supplies.

When upgrading a TV 21660/.09 to TV 21660.01 with the Upgrade Kit TV

21662, perform the following steps:

h Install the ETP Unit

h Remove the original separation diodes
h Connect the interconnect cable between the main component board
and the ETP Unit
h Replace also the switch cables with new ones that are heat resistant.
(The switch cables will be in close contact with the heatsink.)

The interconnect cable and the swich cables are included in the Upgrade
Kit.

The telecommunications units are connected to the common alarm

circuit via the flat cable bus A. The bus contains three alarm lines with an
open collector type control, and a +5 V auxiliary voltage which is used for
supervision of the unit power supplies.

In the PSA, the alarm lines drive the relays and the LED indicators. The
relay contact information can be taken to the centralized monitoring
system as a ground contact or a current loop. The selection is made by
jumpers at terminal block NR31 of the PSA.

If the battery voltage is cut off, an AĆalarm is always given via the relay.
When a separate backup battery voltage is used, the red LED is also lit. If
the power supply of the PSA becomes damaged, either an AĆ or a
BĆalarm, depending on the nature of the fault, is given.

The alarm information is obtained from the screw connector P31 on the
PSA. The crossĆsectional area of the wire must be less than 1.5 mm2. The
load tolerated by the relays is dependent on the voltage used as defined in
the table below.

3.2 Work order

The PSA is installed on top of the equipment subracks. Using the
mounting accessories, the installation can be done in a standard 19" rack
with 0.5 U spaces. The spaces for air circulation between the subracks
and between the uppermost rack and the PSA must be made as high as
possible to ensure uninhibited air circulation. The maximum allowable
space is 3 U.

Work order:

1. Mount the PSA into the rack (or on the wall) so that the unit slides in
its brackets. Pull the unit out to the front position (see Figures 13 and
14).

2. Bring the cables for battery voltages and those for criterion, ringing
and backup battery voltages, if they are used, via the opening in
the right edge of the PSA back panel and connect them to the PSA
connector J40. Strip cable ends for 10 mm. Clamp the cables by
fastening them to the support above the opening with cable ties.

3. Bring the flat cable buses via the opening in the left edge of the PSA
back panel and connect them to the PSA. The extension of the cable
cover should match the notch in the connector. Take the buses
between the cable clamp above the opening in the back. Close the
cable clamp.

4. Cut the flat cable bus at a suitable location, if necessary. After

cutting, remove the end connector shield to the last connector
remaining on the cable.

5. If the flat cables include unused connectors, protect them with the
plastic strips that are delivered with the cable.

6. Connect the flat cable buses to equipment subracks. Connect the

buses to the connectors at the back of the subrack. Each subrack
is typically provided with at least one flat cable bus A and one flat
cable bus B.

7. Mark down the subrackĆlevel wiring scheme on the sticker on the

inside of the PSA front panel.

8. Connect the grounding conductor of the PSA.

9. Push the PSA back to the back position and fasten the front panel.

3.1 Interfaces for Central Battery, Ringing and Cri-

terion Voltages
Two actual battery voltages and a reserve battery voltage can be connected to the
PIA unit. The two battery voltages are combined by diodes in the unit. The central
battery voltage can vary within –20...–72 V DC.
The central battery voltages are connected to the units via the protective switch of
the PIA unit, the bus A and the motherboard of the equipment cartridge. The
switch also provides overcurrent protection.
Through the PIA unit, the central battery voltage can be connected to one to three
equipment cartridges, depending on the loads of the units. If the central battery
voltage is connected through the flat cable bus A and connector P3, the total cur-
rent consumption of the units can be 4 A at the maximum, and if it is connected
through the bus A at the Euroconnector P5, the total current consumption of the
units can be 2.2 A at the maximum.
The ringing and criterion voltages required in signalling equipment use are con-
nected to the units via the fuses and either the flat cable bus B or the bus B at the
Euroconnector P5.

3.2 Alarms
The alarm relays and LEDs in the PIA unit are controlled from the unit cards in the
equipment cartridges. The alarm controls are transmitted via the bus A.
The purpose of the alarm LEDs is to give a visual indication of the cartridge or
mounting frame in which the faulty unit is located. The red LED indicates an
A–alarm, the yellow LEDs indicate B– and D–alarms.
An alarm state can be transferred to the centralized alarm monitoring system as
either a ground contact or current loop. The selection is performed by jumper
strappings.
If battery voltages are cut off, an A–alarm is obtained via the relay, and if the
reserve battery voltage is connected, the red alarm LED A will also be lit.
If the +5 V auxiliary voltage of the power supply in the PIA unit becomes faulty, a
B–alarm is obtained.

Figure 4 Principle of PIA unit power supply

The PIA unit contains a power supply unit which generates an auxiliary voltage
for the units and a voltage for the alarm LEDs and relays of the PIA unit. By means
of the auxiliary voltage, a unit can also give a visual alarm if its own power supply
becomes faulty. If the reserve battery voltage is connected, the power supply of the
PIA unit will operate in case the actual battery voltage supply is cut off. The power
supply has been mounted in a metal case in order to attenuate disturbances.
The input voltage range of the power supply is wide (–20...–72 V DC). The pri-
mary and secondary voltages of the circuit are galvanically separated from each
other. The switching power supply operates in current mode with a switching fre-
quency of approx. 150 kHz.

3.5 Capacitors
The capacitors in the PIA unit function as an energy store by means of which the
equipment-specific power supply units can operate also during short–term volt-
age outages. The hold times depend on the loads of the units and the central battery
voltage. If the total load of the units is 60 W, the hold time with the nominal battery
voltage of 24 V is 1.4 ms and with the battery voltage of 48 V it is 17 ms.

4.1 Installation Methods

The PIA unit can be installed into:
D a separate PIA cartridge TF 21466 (10 T)
D the same equipment cartridge as the telecommunication units.
If the PIA unit is installed into a separate PIA cartridge, connection to the equip-
ment cartridges is made through unit connectors P3 and P4 using the flat cables
delivered along with the unit. The external battery and alarm interfaces can be
connected directly to the PIA unit connectors J1 and J7 without any RFI filters.
If the PIA unit is installed into the same equipment cartridge as the telecommuni-
cation units, connection to the units is made via the back connector P5 and the
motherboard of the cartridge. No flat cables are connected to the PIA unit. When
this installation method is used, the PIA unit feed connections must be shielded
using the Power Supply Line TV 21634.
In a 20 T equipment cartridge, the PIA unit is mounted furthermost on the left to
facilitate routing of the wires. The unit then takes two 5 T unit locations. In a 40 T
cartridge, the PIA unit can be mounted also in the fourth unit location, in which
case it takes only one unit location of the cartridge.
In the wall mounting shelves, the PIA unit is always installed in the equipment
cartridge. If the PIA unit is used for feeding several cartridges, Wall Installation
Buses A and B, TV 21635 and TV 21636, are to be used. These are connected to
the connectors at the top edge on the back of the equipment cartridges.

Installation

4.2 Installation Stages

D The PIA cartridge or the equipment cartridge is inserted in the mounting
frame or on the wall mounting shelf and fixed with a locking screw.
D The flat cable buses are connected to the connectors of the equipment car-
tridges. (On the use of buses, refer to sections 3.5 and 3.6).
D The required settings are made on the PIA unit:
S The connection of the relay output alarms is selected by terminal strip
NR2. (On the connection of alarms, refer to section 3.7).
S Connection of supply voltages is selected by shorting parts of connec-
tors J2...J4 (refer to sections 3.3 and 3.4).
S Fuses F1...F3 are changed if required.
S Varistor VDR6 is added if required.
D The power supply lines, if they are to be used, are mounted on the grounding
plate of the equipment cartridges (refer to Operating Instructions for the
Power Supply Line appended to these instructions).
D The screw part of the PIA unit connector J7 is detached and the conductors of
the alarm circuit (the PIA unit in a separate PIA cartridge) or the Power Sup-
ply Lines (the PIA unit in the equipment cartridge) are connected to it.
D The PIA unit in placed on the unit guides, the screw part of the connector J7 is
attached, the possible flat cable buses are connected and the unit is inserted in
its place in the cartridge.
D The screw part of the connector J1 is detached and the supply lines (PIA in a
separate PIA cartridge) or the Power Supply Lines (PIA in the equipment car-
tridge) are connected.
D The alarm lines and supply voltages are connected to the cable terminal con-
nectors of the Power Supply Lines.
D The screw part of the connector J1 is attached to its place.
Caution The PIA unit must not be removed from the cartridge with the volt-
ages connected to it because of the short–circuit risk. The battery
feeding must always be disconnected by removing the screw part
of the connector J1.

4.3 Central Battery Interface Connection

The central battery voltages are connected to the connector J1 and the different
connection alternatives of the interface are selected by the shorting parts of the
connectors J2...J4. Figures 7 and 8 show two examples.
It is recommended that the distribution network of the central battery voltage be a
floating network with a high resistance. A high-resistance network is one where
the resistance of the feed line is at least 50 mohm.
The polarity of the battery interface is negative and the cross-sectional area of the
lines must be < 1.5 mm2.

4.4 Connection of Ringing and Criterion Voltage

Interface
An external ringing voltage can be connected to the connector J1. Its voltage
transients can be filtered by installing an appropriate varistor at location VDR6 on
the PCB.
A separate floating criterion voltage can also be brought to the connector J1 or it
can be derived from the battery voltage 1.
Figures 7 and 8 show connection examples.

4.5 Bus A
Through bus A, the battery voltage and the auxiliary voltage of +5 V are connected
from the PIA unit to the motherboards of the equipment cartridges. The alarm con-
trols are also conveyed in bus A from the units to the PIA unit.
In a wall mounting shelf or mounting frame where only one equipment cartridge is
used, bus A is connected to the units via Euroconnector P5 of the PIA unit and
motherboard of the equipment cartridge. When several equipment cartridges are
used, a 10–pole flat cable is required for connecting bus A to the units via con-
nector P3 of the PIA unit and the motherboards of the equipment cartridges.

Through bus B, the ringing and criterion voltages required in signalling equip-
ment use are connected from the PIA unit to the motherboards of the equipment
cartridges.
In a wall mounting shelf or mounting frame where only one equipment cartridge is
used, bus B is connected to the units via Euroconnector P5 of the PIA unit and the
motherboard of the equipment cartridge. When several equipment cartridges are
used, a 4–pole flat cable is required for connecting bus B to the units via connector
P4 of the PIA unit and the motherboards of the equipment cartridges.

General

Chapter 1
General

The AC/DC Power Interface Adapter (AC/DC PIA) serves as an interface point
for mains voltages, ringing and criterion voltages, and alarms when Nokia ND
generation equipment is installed into wall mounting shelves or mounting frames.
The voltage fed to the transmission equipment is the output voltage of the AC/DC
power supply in the unit. The nominal output voltage of the AC/DC power supply
is 48 VDC but its adjustment range is 43...60 VDC. If a back-up battery is used, the
output voltage is adjusted to match the back-up battery voltage.
It is possible to charge only one battery from the AC/DC power supply, owing to
the separating diodes on the AC/DC PIA unit.
The AC/DC PIA is switched on and off by plugging the mains cable to the unit or
detaching it.
Important!
This unit can only be plugged to an outlet with protected earth contacts.
In EMC installations AC/DC PIA (TV 21630.01 / TV 21631.51) must not be
installed to equipment cartridge containing other equipment. In order to fulfill the
EMC requirements the PIA unit must be installed using the 10 T PIA Cartridge
(TF 21466.09) or a separate 20 T EMC cartridge (housing only the PIA Unit).
Note 1. Before connecting the mains voltage to the unit, check that the
input voltage selector is set correctly 220 VAC.
2. Start-up of the unit takes a few seconds.

3.1 Interfaces for Back-Up and/or Reserve Battery

Voltages, Ringing and Criterion Voltages
Two actual battery voltages and a reserve battery voltage can be connected to the
AC/DC PIA unit. The two battery voltages are combined by diodes in the unit.
When the actual battery voltages are used at the same time, both positive pole con-
ductors must be attached to the same point, i.e. to J1/10 because J1/9 is used for
another purpose.
There are no fuses for external batteries in the unit, and therefore a separate fuse
must be installed for each battery.
The generated (and possibly battery-protected) voltages are connected to the units
via bus A and the motherboard of the equipment cartridge. Both the AC/DC power
supply and the DC/DC power supply (+5 V) provide overcurrent protection.
The output voltage generated in the AC/DC PIA unit can be connected to 1...3
equipment cartridges, depending on the loads of the units.
The ringing and criterion voltages required in signalling equipment use are con-
nected to the units via the fuses and either the flat cable bus B or bus B at Eurocon-
nector P5.

3.2 Back-Up Battery Selection

The nominal voltage of the battery system shall be 48 V. A system where four
pieces of 12 V batteries are connected in series is suitable. A sealed lead acid bat-
tery is recommended as it is easy to use and needs no maintenance.
The following rule of thumb can be used as a basis for defining the capacity of the
back-up battery: the maximum charging current is one tenth of the battery
capacity in amperes. As the maximum current obtained from the power supplies is
1.8 A, the capacity of the battery is 18 Ah.
The capacity of the battery can be even greater. If a battery system with lower
capacity is desired, it should be made sure that the charging current is not too high.
Normally, most of the current obtained from the power supply is consumed by the
equipment itself, whereas the battery receives only a fraction of the current. The
equipment consumes most of the current, because the DC/DC power supplies are
able to operate even with lower voltages than the battery voltage. Thus also small-
sized and low-capacity batteries (e.g. 4 x 12 V 1.2 Ah) can be used after checking
the correct charging current.
Note Do not forget to install a suitable fuse to the battery cable!

3.3 Alarms
The alarm relays and LEDs in the AC/DC PIA unit are controlled from the unit
cards in the equipment cartridges. The alarm controls are transmitted via bus A.

6 E Copyright Nokia Telecommunications Oy NTC C33392001SE_A0

Operation

The purpose of the alarm LEDs is to give a visual indication of the cartridge or
mounting frame in which the faulty unit is located. The red LED indicates an
A-alarm, the yellow LEDs indicate B- and D-alarms.
From the relays an alarm state can be transferred to the centralized alarm monitor-
ing system as either a ground contact or current loop. The selection is performed
by jumper strappings (NR2). See Figure 3.
If the 48 V voltage is cut off, an A-alarm is obtained via the relay, and if the reserve
battery voltage is connected, the red alarm LED A will also be lit.
If the +5 V auxiliary voltage of the power supply in the AC/DC PIA unit becomes
faulty, a B-alarm is obtained. If the +12 V of the power supply becomes faulty, an
A-alarm is obtained but the alarm LED will not be lit.

3.4 Interface for Service Terminal Battery Charging

A battery voltage is obtained from connector P6 for charging the Service Terminal
battery via fuse F1. Connector pin a3 is positive and c3 negative.
The power supply unit of the Service Terminal is able to charge its batteries from
input voltages of –20...–72 VDC.

3.5 AC-Low Indication (TV 21630.51 only)

The AC-Low monitor circuit (ACL) is used to supervise the mains input voltage.
Rectified and filtered mains voltage is compared with a reference voltage. The
comparator output controls an optocoupler, which provides high isolation
voltage. Hysteresis of the comparator prevents oscillation.
The user can adjust the voltage at which the ACL operates (potentiometer RT1 on
the component board of the AC-Low monitor). The suitable value of the voltage
depend on the nominal value, accuracy and quality of the mains voltage.
The AC-Low indication output can be used for an external alarm logic or relay.
The maximum current from the optocoupler output transistor is approximately 0.2
A and the breakdown voltage is 32 V. The collector of the optocoupler is internally
connected to the positive voltage of the power supply. The emitter is connected to
the output pin 6/J1 in the AC / DC PIA unit. See principle in Figure 4.
The alarm limit is set at the factory to 183 VAC ±1 % and the hysteresis is 7 V, so
the alarm will expire at 190 VAC.

Operation

3.6 AC/DC Power Supply

The AC/DC power supply unit is operating in a switching mode principle and
controlled with the pulse width modulation. This power supply converts the mains
voltage 220 VAC to a DC voltage, which nominal value is 48 V. The input is
provided with an EMI filter and a varistor (VDR) to attenuate disturbances and to
provide overvoltage protection. An NTC resistor rejects the inrush current at a
start-up.
It is possible to adjust the output voltage by potentiometer RT1 from 43 V to 60 V,
approximately. The potentiometer is inside of the power supply metal case, see
Figure 1. The output voltage is set to 54 V at the factory to suit the sealed lead acid
batteries which are normally used.
The unit is provided with a facility named ”Boost operation” for faster charging of
batteries after a mains failure. The operation increases the output voltage of the
power supply to approx. 60 V. The voltage is dependent on the positions of
potentiometers RT1 and RT2. The voltage is adjusted to the desired value by RT2
after the normal voltage is first set by RT1. The operation is activated by
interconnecting pins 10 and 9 of the AC/DC PIA connector J1, which causes the
positive pole of the power supply to be connected to the Boost line.
The output voltage slightly changes as the output current changes. This enables
paralleling of the AC/DC PIA units when required.

Figure 5 Principle of the DC/DC power supply in AC/DC PIA

The AC/DC PIA unit contains a power supply unit which generates an auxiliary
voltage +5 V for the units and a +12 V voltage for the alarm LEDs and relays of
the AC/DC PIA unit. By means of the auxiliary voltage, a unit can also give a
visual alarm if its own power supply becomes faulty. If the reserve battery voltage
is connected, the DC/DC power supply will also operate in case the actual battery
voltage supply is cut off.

TV 21630.01/.51 Operating Instructions

The input voltage range of the power supply is wide (–20...–72 VDC). The primary
and secondary voltages of the circuit are galvanically separated from each other.
The switching mode power supply operates in current mode with a switching
frequency of approximately 300 kHz.
The input of the power supply unit contains a fusible resistor serving as a
short-circuit protector if the power supply unit does not limit the current. The
power supply is provided with a hybrid circuit containing, among other things, a
start-upcircuitry, a pulse-width modulator, and a switching transistor (MOSFET).

3.8 Hold-Up Time

The energy stored in the input and output capacitors of the AC/DC power supply
provides a reasonable hold-up time.

3.9 Power LED

The main circuit board includes a green LED for indicating the operation of the
AC/DC power supply. Operation of the LED can be changed by a jumper setting.
This jumper setting is also used to select whether the power to the batteries and to
the telecommunications equipment is fed straight or through a separating diode.

4.2 Connection of Ringing and Criterion Voltage

Interface
An external ringing voltage can be connected to connector J1. Voltage transients
are filtered out by the varistor VDR6. The value of the varistor is 120 V and the
varistor can be replaced by another one if the value does not suit.
A separate floating criterion voltage can also be brought to connector J1 or it can
be derived from the battery voltage 1.

4.3 Bus A
Through bus A, the 48 V supply voltage and the auxiliary voltage of +5 V are
connected from the AC/DC PIA unit to the motherboards of the equipment
cartridges. The alarm controls are also conveyed in bus A from the units to the
AC/DC PIA unit.
When only one equipment cartridge is used, bus A is connected to the units via
Euroconnector P5 of the AC/DC PIA unit and motherboard of the equipment
cartridge. When several equipment cartridges are used, a 10-pole flat cable is
required for connecting bus A to the units via connector P3 of the AC/DC PIA unit
and the motherboards of the equipment cartridges.

4.4 Bus B
Through bus B, the ringing and criterion voltages required in signalling
equipment use are connected from the AC/DC PIA unit to the motherboards of the
equipment cartridges.
When only one equipment cartridge is used, bus B is connected to the units via
Euroconnector P5 of the AC/DC PIA unit and the motherboard of the equipment
cartridge. When several equipment cartridges are used, a 4-pole flat cable is
required for connecting bus B to the units via connector P4 of the AC/DC PIA unit

Using a Grounding Protective Sleeve

Chapter 5
Using a Grounding Protective Sleeve

If a cabling connector is to be disconnected and reconnected frequently, a break-

age may occur in the aluminum foil of the cable which weakens the EMC protec-
tion. In these kinds of applications, it is advisable to place a grounding protective
sleeve on top of the aluminum foil. It is fastened by cable ties and a shrinking
sleeve. Please see the following installation instructions.
Note Different stripping lengths for 1/1– and 1/4–Euroconnectors

Installation instructions for protective sleeve

The numbering of the steps corresponds to the numbering used in Figures 16 and
17.
1. Strip the outer sheath of the cable on the length indicated in item 1. Be careful
not to damage the aluminum foils and grounding wire underneath.
2. Remove the outer aluminum foil on the entire stripping length. Cut the inner
aluminum foil acting as EMC protection as indicated in item 2. Do not cut the
grounding wire, but turn its entire length around the inner aluminum foil.
3. Pull the grounding protective sleeve on top of the aluminum foil and ground-
ing wire, extending it approx. 15 mm on top of the outer sheath of the cable.
4. Place pieces of shrinking sleeve on top of the protective sleeve at both ends of
it and shrink them with a hot air blower. Use a shrinking sleeve with as small a
diameter as possible to avoid having to use a long heating time which may
damage the wire insulators. Secure the shrinking sleeve outside the connector
with a cable tie. Tie the other shrinking sleeve with a cable tie when encasing
the connector.
5. Connect the Euroconnector according to is connection instructions.

for approx. 20 cables
D The branching is made in the horizontal part of the cable above or below the
cartridge.
D Dimension the cable according to the location of the connector furthest from
the branching point.
D Open the cable up to the branching point and remove protective sheaths while
being careful not to mix the pairs.
D Define the length of the protective sleeves for the wire bunches to be attached
to the connectors of the unit and burn their ends to prevent them from ravel-
ling by using a hot air blower and a metal pivot appropriate for the sleeve size.
Slide the protective sleeves into place.
D Protect the branching point by a cable tie and a shrinking sleeve (see Figure
18).
D Shrink the shrinking sleeve to its place by heating with the hot air blower. Do
not overheat the cable sheath.
