Resource Efficiency:

Infosys, through efficient use of natural resources aims at reducing their impact
on the ecosystem. Towards their commitment of being a responsible consumer
of energy, water and other natural resources they have taken several steps like
investment in green buildings and have also launched several initiatives to
conserve electricity, reuse paper, recycle water and effective management of
waste.
Infosys believes that they can be a sustainable organization only if their
infrastructure and operations are sustainable. For this they have “Green
Initiative” teams which aim at developing smart infrastructure that can support
overall ecology. Infosys has 1,400,000 sq. ft. of green building under
construction under this. Electricity alone contributes to 73% of Infosys’s emission
of carbon and so to meet their objective of carbon neutrality they focus on
efficiency initiatives and source electricity from renewable sources and have
been able to generate 3.6 million kWh of electricity through renewable sources.
Infosys’s employees also work towards achieving the company’s goal to be a
sustainable organization. They and their families participate in different Eco
group activities organized by the company as for example “The Seedball drive”.
Under this nearly 110 Infoscions accompanied by their families participated in
the unconventional seedball drive. This drive aims towards afforestation by
scattering of seedballs at different places like in Devarabatta forest area
(Dodaballapur) in Karnataka. The company also has 23,714 trees planted in India
office location. The other Eco Group activities at Infosys are “Earth Hour” and
“Project green hands”. Through various other environmental activities Infosys
has been able to achieve 18% reduction in per capita electricity consumption
during last two years.

Green Innovation:

Infosys, apart from being socially responsible itself, helps its clients also towards
their CSR activities. Infosys devise different client solutions under Green
Innovation to ensure that their clients are also socially responsible.
Many of their business units work with clients in creating sustainable solutions to
optimize production and thereby reducing the energy consumption. Infosys has
provided an Integrated Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution by primarily
focusing on streamlining and automating business processes and reducing their
client’s carbon footprint. One of the Infosys business units “Finacle” provides
banks with Finacle universal banking solution and surround services which
enables banks to automate their core functions and streamline their processes
resulting in a host of benefits including improved resource utilization, increased
operational efficiency and faster time to market to launch innovative products
and services and thus reducing the carbon footprint of several banks. SETLabs,
one of several Infosys’s business units, which aims at emerging technologies for
improving engineering effectiveness and developing client-focused business
solution, has developed an application known as “The InGreen Energy
Management” that enables the tracking and reporting of energy-related data
ranging from highly aggregated to granular levels. This application helps gain
insight into energy consumption patterns and identifies opportunities for
targeted action which can help to achieve optimal consumption. Infosys uses this
application to manage energy consumption and carbon emissions at their
campuses across India. This has enabled the company to save 10% in energy
cost year-on-year and has also helped to identify usage patterns and design
flaws that cause energy leakage.
