The Smart Energy Demand Coalition Presents White Paper on

Ensuring European Demand Side Programme Success
Coalition Finds that 1m New Green Jobs Could Be Created by 2022 if European
Consumers Have Access to Smart Energy Programmes

Brussels, Belgium – March 31, 2010 – In the evening of 29 March, The Smart Energy Demand
Coalition held a speaker event in Brussels entitled “How to ensure demand side programme
success in Europe” At this launch event, SEDC released the results of the new SEDC white
paper and discussed what is required to make Demand Side Programs succeed in Europe, as
well as the cutting-edge policy measures that the group has joined together to support.

Speaking at the evening’s event, Jessica Stromback, Executive Director of the SEDC said: “We
were delighted by the attendance and direct participation by representatives of the European
Commission, the EU Parliament, and the Presidency at our SEDC Launch Event. Their
presentations made clear to us that all three of these bodies realise the urgency of successfully
establishing the Demand Response and other Demand Side Programs in Europe and their
support of our efforts was extremely meaningful.”

Alicia Carrasco, European Policy Director for eMeter and Secretary of the SEDC said “Demand
Response is one of the pillars of the 20/20/20 plan, putting consumers at the center of the
operation. We need to ensure that consumer awareness and on-going education programs are a
key part of any energy efficiency programme.”

During the panel discussion, Marko Svetina, CEO of the European Demand Response Research
Center, pointed out: “On estimate over 10% of the electric power infrastructure has been
constructed in order to meet peaks in electricity demand that occur less than 1% of the time. The
supply value chain can only be efficiently optimized through demand response programs.”

Philippe Raffin of Schneider Electric explained: "Demand response is a practical and efficient way
to implement smart grid. It allows to reward the consumers that offers negawatt to the grid at
peak time instead of using more power plants that have a negative carbon impact. Another
example of the positive impact of negawatts."

Billions of Euros are currently being spent on the development and rollout of a variety of Smart
Grid related technologies throughout Europe. However, the success of the “smart” grid is greatly
dependent on the ability to make energy demand “smart”, actively engaging with demand side
customers, using tools such as feedback, dynamic pricing, automation and aggregated demand
response.
Oliver Stahl, CEO of Entelios, said: “It is not about penalizing or confronting demand side
customers with inconveniences, rather incentivizing the demand side to make consumption
flexible and doing so in an automated way. Entelios utilizes therefore its NOC (Network
Operations Center) technology to aggregate loads from commercial and industrial customers (we
actually call them participants), and while doing so providing value to grid operators and utilities
as well as monetary benefits.”
