ST. JOHN’S BLUE JAYS

Veteran Blue Jay hardballers expect big 2011
By JIM METCALFE
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com
DELPHOS — St. John’s made it all the
way to the Division IV regional baseball
finals last spring.
With six full-time starters and five other
lettermen back from that 16-11 crew, includ-
ing 5-4 in the rugged Midwest Athletic
Conference, ninth-year head man Dan
Metzger has the tools to repeat and perhaps
go even farther in 2011.
“With only graduated three seniors from
last year’s team, we have a lot of veterans
back. That doesn’t include Chris Pohlman
(.341 batting average, 9 doubles, 2 home
runs, 29 runs batted in, 18 runs scored), a
3-year starter at catcher who is currently out
with off-season shoulder surgery but might
be back late in the season,” Metzger began.
“We feel good about our experience and
leadership coming into the season. We are

Blue Jay boys strong in sprints, vault, mid-distance for 2011

By JIM METCALFE
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com
DELPHOS — The St. John’s boys track
and field team lost a boatload of seniors from
2010’s edition of Blue Jays, including state-
placer Steven Metcalfe (seventh in the discus),
and 14 others.
Still, with 11 lettermen back from a year ago,
head coach Dr. Jay DeWitt has a pretty good
handle on things.
As usual, DeWitt figures that sprints will
be the biggest asset of this year’s unit with six
of his veterans in those categories: fourth-year
seniors Evan Burgei (sprints and relays), Joe
Haggard (hurdles and relays) and AJ Klausing
(hurdles and relays); junior Chris Will (sprints
and relays); and sophomores Will Buettner
(sprints) and Robbie Ruda (sprints and relays).
Pole vault, with Will and Buettner, should
also be a strength, as well as middle dis-
tance with returnees such as sophomores Mark
Boggs (middle distance and high jump), Cole
Fischbach (middle distance) and Jake Hays
(middle distance).

DELPHOS — St. John’s girls coach Dave
Desenberg has only nine letterwinners back from
last season’s unit that went 1-8 in dual/tri-meets
and finished sixth out of 10 Midwest Athletic
Conference teams at the league meet.
However, three of them — fourth-year senior

All-MAC performer; school-record 1.57 in the

that coveted state experience.
Two other fourth-year seniors: Alicia

at regionals) and Tiffany Recker (shot put and
discus; ninth in discus at regionals), as well as
third-year classmate Emma Boggs (distance; 5th
in 1,600 meters at district); will also try and lead
this flock of Lady Jays.

DELPHOS — Kyle Harmon took over the

Jefferson varsity baseball team last spring for Troy
Montenery and finished 9-15 in 2010, including
3-6 in the Northwest Conference.
Former assistant Doug Geary (6 years as the
junior varsity head man) will now get his shot at
the helm for 2011 and has seven lettermen to build
around in his inaugural campaign.
Fundamentals are going to be a key for the
Wildcats this spring.
“We are a group that will make the routine plays
and get the outs that are there,” Geary began.
Four seniors are back from a year ago, including
two third-year guys to build his infield around in

“We’re taking baby steps. We went 1-19 two years ago and

Wildcat boys track sprinting toward season

By JIM METCALFE
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

DELPHOS — Jefferson’s boys track and

field outfit was a relatively young and inex-
perienced group a year ago for head coach
Larry “Bub” Lindeman.
The 7th-year head man hopes that the
lumps his young charges took in 2010 will
pay great dividends in 2011 as 10 lettermen
are back to help him along.
He especially looks for his returning
sprinters to lead the charge this spring and
into June, while his young core of performers
in the field events get up to snuff.
“We will have a strong core of sprinters
who will contribute to relays and sprints. I
feel our sprinters will contribute greatly and
carry our team, especially early,” Lindeman
noted. “They will have to in hopes that the
kids in the field events will carry more of
the load as they work hard, especially as we
get into the Northwest Conference meet in
mid-May.”
Leading the way for the letterwinners
are Kody Richardson (senior; sprints and
relays), Jacob Leach (senior; sprints and

State qualifiers set to pace Lady ’Cats

By JIM METCALFE
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com
DELPHOS — If all goes according to form,
the Jefferson girls track and field team will be
fully stocked and ready to rumble into 2011 for
sixth-year head coach Ryan Carder.
One caveat, though; several of the expected
key performers were part of the state semifi-
nalist girls basketball team, setting back their
preparations for the coming campaign.
The Lady Wildcats finished fourth as a
team at the Troy Regional and second in the
Northwest Conference meet.
Still, once they get their legs under them for
track and field, Carder returns his entire 4x200-
meter relay that finished fourth in last spring’s
Division III state meet.
That group: seniors Bridget Culp, Morgan
Fischbach and Emily Fought and junior
Kennedy Boggs; was also the 4x100-meter
team that qualified for state.
Culp was not done in that meet, either, as
she finished sixth in the 100-meter dash and
barely missed qualifying for state in the 200-
meter dash.
That foursome will also be heard from in
individual sprints events, as well as jumps
(Boggs).
With expected development and maturation, Jim Metcalfe photo
that quartet will hope to make more noise in
2011, not only during the season but at the state
meet as well.

Castronova has veteran baseball team at Ottoville
By JIM METCALFE

OTTOVILLE — Tony Castronova has compiled

a 178-161 mark in 14 seasons as the head baseball
coach at Ottoville.
He has an opportunity to add significantly to
the wins total as only one starter departed due to
graduation from a year ago; southpaw ace Jordan
Schimmoeller.
That unit finished 7-15 overall.
Nine returning starters — all but two of them
pitchers and all of them versatile as to where the
coach can play them — return for Castronova,
including a quintet of seniors: Cody Delong (pitcher/
infielder), Justin Fischer (infielder), Matt Honigford
(pitcher/infielder/outfielder), Ty Turnwald (pitcher/
infielder) and Aaron Wehri (pitcher/catcher).
Two more are juniors:
Travis Maag (pitcher/infielder) and Austin

in Bryan Hohlbein (pitcher/infielder) and Derek

One other sophomore: Paige Lucas (out-

With only two freshmen — Nicole

and field team had a pretty successful sea-
son in 2010, winning the Putnam County
League.
With 15 letterwinners returning, 19th-
year head coach Vaughn Horstman hopes
for a lot more in 2011.
“We have a good combination of experi-
ence and newcomers that should make for
an enjoyable year. Some strengths should be
in the field and distance events,” Horstman
noted.
Specifically, he was referring to senior
multiple state entrant Shayla Siefker
(qualifier in the 1,600-meter run a year
ago), earning her fourth letter, and third-
year junior Lauren Koch (qualifier in the
long jump).
As well, fourth-year seniors Natasha

LINCOLNVIEW LANCERS
Lancer baseball seeking offense for 2011 season
By JIM METCALFE
jmetcalfe@delphosherald.com

RURAL MIDDLE POINT —

Lincolnview’s baseball team batted .326
last year as a unit from
the 2010 varsity program
that finished 8-15, includ-
ing 2-7 in the Northwest
Conference.
Head coach Brad
Mendenhall lost a big chuck
of that offense and must find sticks to
replace the eight departed seniors.
“We lost eight seniors from last year
and a good chunk of our offense. We are
going to need our returning letterwin-
ners to take a huge step up for us both
on the offensive and defensive side.,”
Mendenhall noted. “As a team last year,
we hit .326. I don’t anticipate hitting the
ball that well but I believe we will be bet-
ter defensively. For us to improve, it will
take making routine plays defensively and
having good plate discipline offensively.
