Collection Development Plan

Dr. Judith Repman

I am basing my collection development plan on the media center at Jeff Davis

High School. I wanted to base my project on a history course because that is an
area the I am personally interested in so I contacted one of the teachers in our
history department. After discussing the project with him and what I was aiming to
accomplish, we decided to approach a unit on European History. Our students
spend a lot of time on websites such as USA TestPrep to prepare for standardized
tests, and we wanted to look specifically to expand the electronic resources that
students can access in addition to the USA TestPrep material.

Jeff Davis High School currently has 60 faculty members and 748 students.
Our media center collection currently has 15,869 items in circulation. This includes
print materials, VHS Tapes, DVDs, Televisions, DVD/VHS players, and COWs. Our
collection contained 47 print items related to European history, 6 VHS Tapes and no
DVDs that were copyrighted from 1999 to present date.

The European History unit of 9th grade world history is the unit that we chose
to focus on. There are currently 206 ninth graders enrolled and 96 of them are
currently enrolled in 9th grade world history. There are 3 teachers who teach 9th
grade world history. There are 6 ESOL students and 12 special education students
currently enrolled in 9th grade world history. It appears that reading level is not a
recorded measurement at the high school level. I could not find anyone at our
school that could give me a clue as to student reading levels.

The only local resource for world history information in our county is the
public library. While they probably do not have the quantity of academically aimed
books in the area of world history that we have in the high school media center, it is
always possible that they will have resources that we will not.

After speaking with the teacher, the history department uses mainly lecture
and videos in their classes, but he said that they did not have a video that covered
European history during medieval times. After reviewing the collection to be sure
this was accurate, he was right. There were no real resources outside of print
materials and old VHS tapes that were relevant to this unit. The European history
unit of 9th grade world history is based on Georgia Performance Standard SSWH7,
sections a, b, c, and d. The unit of study is described by the following diagram:
This unit is followed by a test administered by the teacher that covers all of the
content related to this unit. The test is as follows:
This unit of study is based on Georgia Performance Standard SSWH7 which is as
follows:

SSWH7

Grade: 9,10,11,12

Description: SSWH7 The student will analyze European medieval society with regard
to culture, politics, society, and economics.

Elements:

a. Explain the manorial system and feudalism, to include the status of peasants and
feudal monarchies and the importance of Charlemagne.
b. Describe the political impact of Christianity to include Pope Gregory VII and King
Henry IV.
c. Explain the role of the church in medieval society.
d. Describe how increasing trade led to the growth of towns and cities.

This standard is intended to give students an understanding of medieval life in

Europe.

I evaluated several different aspects of our collection with regards to

European history. We have over 2000 print items regarding history, but only some
400 of them pertained to European history and of those only 47 were copyrighted
1999 or newer. I know that history doesn’t change, but the format in which it is
presented does. When I looked at our circulation statistics, of the 47 print items
published since 1999, only 29 of the books had been checked out in the last since
February 2004, 5 years. Out of those 29 books, they had collectively been checked
out only 72 times with the highest number of circulations in one year for any given
book being 3 times, and many items were never checked out at all during most of
the 5 years.

The collection contained 6 VHS tapes and no DVDs relating to European

history that had been produced since 1999. We have no subscriptions to any
electronic services or eBooks that deal with European history other than the USA
TestPrep material which is directed more at preparing students for a standardized
test than being an actual educational resource. After speaking with the teacher, I
believe that we need to invest in providing teachers in our history department with
some updated DVD videos regarding European history, especially regarding
medieval times. The bulk of our existing VHS collection that addresses Europe is
based on one of the World Wars.
I used TitleWave to compare our overall collection to the Wilson Core list and
as you can see by the following chart, our fiction is relatively bloated compared to
the rest of our titles. Because of this I would like to avoid ordering any further
fiction titles. The geography and history section was slightly below the Wilson
recommendation and that is where I plan to spend the bulk of my budget.
Also, as the following graph illustrates, the vast majority of our collection is
beyond the age range recommended for the individual Dewey classes. Just in the
900-999 Dewey class, we have 1,150 titles that are over 15 years old.

$63.25 of the Follett order went toward purchasing Spanish language books which
are highlighted in yellow in the order breakdown above. I talked to our ESOL
teacher but he said that they discourage their students from using Spanish
language materials whenever possible so that they do not become dependent upon
reading in their native language. This is the reason that I did not put much
emphasis on Spanish language materials. Also, out of the 12 special education
students enrolled in 9th grade world history, 11 of them are listed as
behavioral/emotional and that last student is listed as other health impairment
because of a problem with his legs. Thus I did not feel the need to invest in any
accommodating materials in this order.
