Variants: Evolved from the Model 88o (see pages 34-5)
to meet the specific requirements of American Airlines,
the Model 99o was originally identified as the Model
6oo. Early in the flight trials the first aircraft was
found to suffer oscillation in the outer engine pods at
certain combinations ofairspecd and manceuvre, neces-
sitating major modifications. Further trials revealed
unexpectedly high airframe drag which prevented
guaranteed speed and range figures being achieved.
All aircraft were subsequently further modified and
redesignated Model 99oA. Model 99oA Coronado-

military equipment and rcfurbished to commercial
standards, the C-54 alias DC-4 was the most widely
used four-engined airliner in the immediate post-war
ycars, but the bulk of the z3o or so converted C-54q
and DC-4s in airline use are now serving in the role of
freighters.

Variants : Possessing the distinction of having been the
first airliner to attain commercial service, the Tu-rz4 is
essentially a scaled-down Tu-ro4 (see pages 58-9).
Its relatively high thrust-weight ratio combined with
a high lift wing system enables the Tu-rz4 to operate
from fields previously served only by airscrew-
driven aircraft, a special flap located beneath the
fuselage being deflected to increase the approach
angle for difficult airfields. A braking parachute is
provided mainly to provide additional braking in the
