Conceptual approach

The design form consists of many straight edges at skew angles, creating areas around the building
of which a defined ‘frame’ of a particular area can be seen. These determined frames of the building
are due to the angles, edges and dimensions of walls roofs and landscaping viewpoints.
An interesting approach arose at the conceptual stage of design whilst looking at the constraints of a
film or photo’s edge. As it appears on paper a photo has strict limitations due to the ‘frame’ of which
the viewer sees the building. Through design development the idea of framing the building one facet
at a time was an important feature to my overall form and appearance, which has been considered
at all scales, including detailing of window joins. The impression of folds or cuts is attempted to be
achieved by seamless edges. Junctions between wall/ roof, wall/ floor, ceiling/ wall, glass/concrete
and interior finishes have been detailed and located to be viewed as clean seamless joins. Corten
steel, painted GIB lined walls, sound reducing insulation pads, pre cast concrete and veneer timber
floors are some materials that have been detailed in specific ways to emphasise the designed facets
and sharp edges.

The design is practical for the program and has a large public performance/ auditorium area. The
auditorium seats approx 300 people and is the star attraction to the site. Specific view points from
various areas will give an impression of the masive atrium cantilevering out over an outdoor plaza.
The program suits requirements for a film and music learning institution with modern technology
used and concious development of space for tutorial rooms, music practice, filming suites and com-
puter editing labs. The complex has 20 offices which range from single to triple in size. Post grad
students and teachers offices are focused towards the south of the complex, whereas public areas
are towards the northern front. 24 hour access is available only via swipe entry and at south carpark
entrance. The building will be locked apart from the south offices, and downstairs labs and recording
suites.

Materials used are mainly steel and concrete in order to support the skewed forms. The cladding ma-
terial alongside concrete is corten steel and zinc cladding which help to create the seamledd joints
the design strived for. The urban design is a development of an apparent run down area of newtown.
Improving the connectivity between Massey and Toi + the new Music and Film school will boost
popularity in the area and help small business grow. I have allocated the bus hub to be situated on
the northern part of Hutchinson road which will draw students down from Massey and also allow pub-
lic to get up close and personal with the intriguing forms that will intrest most.

Representation technique
In order to achieve a clear understanding of the spaces and the sharp edged modern complex i have
used computer renders, which i have developed on photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator. Keeping a
clean page was important to my presentation as it was keeping my design facets clean which. Clean
lines drawn in Revit help to keep images uncluttered and emphasise the fold of which my tectonic
approach is based upon.

Case studies
My main case study was a Melbourne architect John Wardle. I researched and analyzed many of his
buildings mainly because they are a firm that pays close attention to detailing frameless
connections between concrete and pre cast concrete. He also uses Zinc cladding commonly and has
interested me to understand how he achieves such joins as i have detailed.
