VISION STATEMENT

To establish the department as a discipline of high national repute by educating

and promoting research activities among the students to become exemplary profes
sional civil engineers, having high caliber and character to face the growing gl
obal technical challenges.
MISSION STATEMENT
We Produce Civil Engineering Professionals of high esteem and caliber by rigorou
s teaching and training in a systematic manner, by exposing the students to the
state-of-the-art technology to face challenges of society, the nation and the wo
rld at large.
1.By providing rigorous teaching and training in various subjects and specialtie
s in a systematic manner by conducting periodical tutorials and holding extra cl
asses.
2.By monitoring the progress of individual students closely.
3.By periodical assessment of students through tests in both theory and practica
l courses.
4.By exposing the students to the state-of-the-art technology by conducting fiel
d visits.
5.By providing opportunities to improve inter personnel skills through personali
ty development camps, vocational guidance, students counseling.
6.By conducting technical lectures from eminent persons in various field of engi
neering.
7.By conducting seminars, conferences and workshops in related topics.

VISION

Transforming Higher Education for a Sustainable Tomorrow

MISSION

USM is a pioneering, trans-disciplinary research intensive university that empowe

rs future talents and enables the bottom billions to transform their socio-econo
mic well-being

Our Vision
Through the excellence of its people, the Department of Mechanical Engineering w
ill be recognized as a leader of its discipline in a manner that exemplifies the
land-grant traditions of learning, discovery, and engagement. The department wi
ll be a desirable place to study and work, with our community comprising the bes
t and the brightest, because of research and educational programs grounded in th
e mechanical engineering sciences and set within the context of meeting importan
t societal needs.
Our Mission
The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering has three tenets that ce
nter on the principle of improving lives and livelihoods: to create knowledge th
rough research in the science and technology of mechanical engineering;to share
knowledge through educational programs and the dissemination of our new discover
ies;and to develop the professional potential of faculty, staff, and students.
Our department expands the frontier of human knowledge in the discipline of mech
anical engineering through fundamental and applied research conducted by faculty
and students. As skilled researchers, we bring the principles of mechanical eng
ineering to bear on important problems of national, and even global, implication:
energy and the environment; health and safety; information and cyberinfrastruct
ure; and national security. Our research portfolio encompasses traditional areas
of mechanical engineering, as well as emerging and interdisciplinary ones. Thro
ugh initiative and innovation, we expand the frontiers of the mechanical enginee
ring profession.
Our land-grant mission is based on the premise that knowledge is beneficial to m
ankind and the greatest benefit comes from dispersing knowledge as widely as pos
sible. We share knowledge with our students through educational programs and all
of society through disseminating our research findings in scholarly publication
s, presentations, patents, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer. Through cl
assroom, laboratory, and project-based instruction, undergraduate and graduate s
tudents are wellserved by a curriculum that is based upon the fundamental princi
ples of mechanical engineering, as well as forwardlooking and set within the con
text of our profession s social mandate. Our curriculum prepares students for dive
rse and successful careers across the global engineering marketplace, and it fur
ther fosters creativity and critical thinking skills through research and design
experiences.
The success of any organization can be measured by its ability to develop and re
alize the potential of its most important asset its people. Students grow through
their educational experiences in and out of the classroom, as well as through th
eir relationships with faculty and each other. Staff members learn new professio
nal skills and apply them through active engagement in the department s operations
. Mentoring opportunities and embracing leadership opportunities that magnify co
ntributions beyond the department s and university s borders develop the scholarly c
areers of faculty members.

Our Vision
The Department of Civil Engineering at SCU recognizes the serious challenges fac
ing human beings in the context of finite nonrenewable resources, climatic chang
es including global warming, an increasingly multicultural global society, expan
ding population centers, the need for maintaining the infrastructure, and the re
sponsibility of industrially developed nations to less developed and rapidly dev
eloping nations. We believe that these challenges can be met with the direct in
volvement of civil engineers committed to the fundamental concepts of renewabili
ty, sustainability, safety and livability.
Our vision is guided the need to provide innovative and appropriate solutions to
these issues through the education of engineers in both the technical and socia
l aspects of engineering, including advanced methods, technologies and policies,
and the need for life-long learning.
Our Mission
The Mission of the Department of Civil Engineering is to educate our students to
prepare for careers in which they can contribute positively to the design, cons
truction, maintenance and advancement of civil engineering-based systems critica
l to the quality of life in a changing world.
We do this by providing students with the skills and tools necessary to understa
nd the physical world, to apply this understanding to current and future needs o
f society and to responsibly and ethically address the impacts that engineered s
ystems can have on a community and its environment. As part of this process, the
Department's faculty and students will advance the state of knowledge of the di
scipline through research, industrial collaboration, publication and relevant se
rvice to the profession and community.
