FEDERAL BOULEVARD - ALAMEDA AVENUE TO 6TH AVENUE
WIDENING AND RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
Project Overview
On Monday, March 21st, the Colorado Department of Transpor-
tation (CDOT) will begin a widening and reconstruction project
on Federal Boulevard (State Highway 88) between Alameda
Avenue and 6th Avenue.
The project will reconstruct and widen approximately one mile
of Federal Boulevard in concrete to accommodate an additional
lane on northbound Federal Boulevard. When complete, there
will be three lanes in each direction with a raised median. In
addition, the traffic signals at the Federal Boulevard/1st Av-
enue and Federal Boulevard/2nd Avenue interchanges will be
replaced and sidewalks will be widened to eight feet to improve
safety for pedestrians.
Scott Contracting, Inc. is the contractor for this $7.8 million proj-
ect scheduled to be complete by the end of January 2013. The
project is being funded by CDOT, the Federal Highway Admin-
istration and the City and County of Denver.
The project will widen Federal Boulevard to accommodate an
additional lane on northbound Federal Boulevard.
What Work Will Take Place in March?
Before the widening and reconstruction of Federal Boulevard
can begin, crews need to complete some utility relocation and
drainage work as well as other preparatory work. Much of this
work will take place off of Federal Boulevard and near Barnum
Park.
Some of the drainage work includes a new storm drain as well
as a sanitary sewer line. This work may require significant
weekend closures, but additional information will be released as
the project progresses.
Traffic Impacts
Throughout the project, one lane of northbound and
southbound Federal Boulevard may be closed from 8:30 a.m.
to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Occasional weekend and
night work is possible. Delays are expected and alternate routes
are advised.

Construction Phasing
Once the utility and water quality work is complete, crews will
begin the reconstruction and widening of Federal Boulevard.
Work will begin in the southbound lanes at 5th Avenue and
move from north to south in two to three block increments.
Once the widening and reconstruction is complete on the
southbound lanes, crews will work in the northbound lanes
starting at Alameda Avenue and working south to north in two
to three block increments.
Crews will finish the project by constructing the raised median
on Federal Boulevard.
What Improvements Will be Made at Barnum
Park?
CDOT partnered with the City and County of Denver to
construct a water quality treatment facility in the southeast
corner of the park with man-made wetlands. The pedestrian/
bicycle trail around the lake will also be completed. Commonly
used areas of the park will not be impacted through this work.
Tentative Schedule
This is a tentative schedule of major milestones. The schedule is
subject to change:
March 2011- The project begins with utility relocation and
sanitary work
April 2011- Reconstruction and widening of southbound Federal
Boulevard begins at 5th Avenue working north to south
Fall 2011- Reconstruction and widening of northbound Federal
Boulevard begins at Alameda Avenue working south to north
Summer 2012- Construction of the raised median begins
January 2013- Construction completed
