The Honorable Robert Mecklenborg, Chairman

State Government and Elections Committee
Ohio House of Representatives
Riffe Tower, 11th Floor
BECKY WILLIAMS 77 South High Street,
President Columbus, OH 43215
LISA HETRICK
Secretary-Treasurer
Dear Chairman Mecklenborg:

ALBACON On behalf of the 25,000 members ofSEIU District 1199 WVIKY/OH, I write to
Executive Vice President
express our union's strong opposition to House Bill 159. The Ohio General
KATHY MCCORMICK Assembly needs to engage in a thoughtful and realistic debate on how to fix our
Executive Vice President
state's current economic crisis. Unfortunately, HB 159 disenfranchises hundreds
of thousands of Ohio citizens from their voting rights.
LARRY DANIELS
Kentucky Vice President
HB 159 contains measures that will require voters voting on Election Day or by an
LANCE FRANKE
Ot-lio State Vice President in-person early vote to present photo identification in the form of an Ohio driver's
license, Ohio state ID card, a military identification, or a U.S. passport.
DEBBIE HAJZAK
Ohio Public Vice President
Ifpassed, the bill will disenfranchise as many as 887,000 Ohioans, according to
CAROL LAFFERTY
West Virginia Vice President the Secretary of State's Office, that are without one of the required forms of
JUDY MALDONADO
identification. It is clear that this legislation will not impact all Ohio citizens
RN Vice President equitably. Rather, it will disproportionately impact those groups who are already
LYNN RADCLIFFE
underrepresented within Ohio's electorate - specifically, minority voters, the
School District & Local disabled, students, the elderly and the poor.
Govt. Vice President

ANNETTE WISNIEWSKI Lastly, it is truly unfortunate that HB 159 been hastily pushed through the State
Ohio Private Vice President
Government and Elections Committee in two days. In line with the intent ofthe
bill, concerned citizens have already been denied the right to exercise their voice
in opposition as the legislation currently stands. Rushing HB 159 through your
committee is reckless since it will only result in the destabilization of our State's
election rules and potentially rob the voice of so many of our fellow citizens.

I implore that you schedule additional hearing dates for HB 159 in your
committee. I also ask that you support equitable voting rules for all Ohioans and
vote against House Bill 159.

Sincerely,

The Service Employees
