Hot vs cold:

Some not moving in the heat

0 5 5
More flipping on cold side, less
0.5 4 6 movement in heat
As it heats up, they all are moving
toward the cold side
1 4 6
One back to heat, rapid movement
1.5 3 7
On remained between for a few
2 4 6 minutes
Remaining along edges in cold side
2.5 5 5
Climbing over each other more
3 0 10 (cold side)
Reduced movement
3.5 0 10
Grouped along edges, some
4 0 10 stationary
Some staying off paper and
remaining stationary, a few
4.5 0 10 circulating and crossing plate
All stayed on cold side for majority

Soil vs none:

Normal movement in no soil

0 5 5
Some moving soil around
0.5 6 4
Some burrowed beneath soil,
moving while covered
1 7 3
Reduced movement in soil side,
some attempting to move through
1.5 7 3 soil
Some gradually moving toward
soil, then back to other side
2 7 3
Staying along the edges on side
without soil
2.5 7 3
Remaining almost stationary on
soil side
3 7 3
Much slower movement in soil
3.5 6 4
Climbing on top of each other
and remaining close together on
4 6 4 edges in side without soil
Very low movement
4.5 6 4
Bugs that pass between sides
move more quickly
5 6 4
Almost all bugs that are in soil
side are sitting on top of soil,
5.5 6 4 practically motionless.

Wet vs dry:

Exploring
0 5 5
Gradual movement to damp side
0.5 8 2
Almost all on damp side
1 9 1
2 circulating on dry
1.5 10 0
Less flipping, all exploring damp side
2 10 0
Less physical contact
2.5 10 0
Separated and slow motion
3 10 0
Reduced movement scattered through
3.5 10 0 middle
One alone exploring dry
4 9 1
Returned to damp, less flipping
4.5 10 0
Few explored dry
5 9 1
Briefly on dry 1 returns
5.5 9 1
All back to damp, some rare flipping
6 10 0
None group together
6.5 10 0
More closer to edges now
7 10 0
Not as isolated from each other
7.5 9 1
Some leave to explore dry more often
8 8 2
More still now, some at the edges
8.5 10 0
More by edges, beginning to interact
9 10 0 more
Occasionally climbing over each other
9.5 9 1
By edges closer together, more interact
10 8 2
Neutral vs Acid:

Most begin exploring respective sides

0 5 5
All moved to one side then other
0.5 9 1
Climbing on top of one another
1 8 2
Some not moving, clustering to edges
1.5 7 3
Split even
2 5 5
Split even
2.5 5 5
Move to acid
3 4 6
Preferring acid side less movement
3.5 2 8
Most stationery
4 1 9
Still not moving
4.5 1 9
Some moved back to neutral side
5 4 6
Circulating on neutral, acid slow
5.5 4 6
Moved back to acid
6 2 8
Moving away to neutral
6.5 6 4
Not much movement in neutral side
7 8 2
No change
7.5 8 2
No change
8 8 2
No change
8.5 8 2
2 move back to acid
9 6 4
1 more back to acid, movement in acid is
9.5 5 5 very slow, seem to stay away from the center
Moved back to neutral, neutral seems
10 7 3 preferred over acid
Experimental Designs for Pillbugs Only:

1. Temperature
a. If the pillbugs are exposed to a choice between either high temperature environment, or room
temperature, they will prefer the room temperature chamber over the hot chamber.

2. Method
a. The objective of this experiment is to test which environment the pillbugs prefer, hot, or room
temperature.
b. Materials to be used are:
i. Pillbugs (10)
ii.2 choice chamber
iii.Hot plate
iv.Books
v.Water
vi.Filter paper (2)
vii.Timing device
c. Procedure
i. Place 1 filter paper in each chamber
ii.Place 5 ml of H2O on each piece
iii.Place choice chamber setup on warm hot plate
iv.Place 5 pillbugs in each side
v.Observe how the organisms move through the chambers

3. Record data
a. Number of isopods in each chamber
b. Behavior (movement) in chambers
c. See above pages
4. Run
a. Done

5. Graph
a. See above

6. Conclusion
a. In conclusion my hypothesis was proven correct. The pillbugs preferred the chamber on the
books (room temperature) over the hot plate chamber (hot).
1. Moisture:
a. If the pillbugs are exposed to a choice between either a moist environment, or a dry environment,
they will prefer the moist chamber over the dry chamber.

2. Method
a. The objective of this experiment is to test which environment the pillbugs prefer, moist, or dry
environments

1. Presence of Soil:
a. If the pillbugs are exposed to a choice between either a chamber with soil, or a chamber without
