Monster Incorporated is large factory which hires big amount of people. The main
aim of the company is to collect as much power as possible to provide it to Monster
World. Monster Inc hires and trains employees how to collect childrenǯs screams
because without it their world wonǯt have any power. Their mission statement is: DzWe
scare because we caredz (Monster Inc move. Organisational structure of the company can
be compared to bureaucratic.

Structure of Monster Inc is similar to Weber theory because in this factory everybody
takes certain position and has task to do. For example:

Scarers like: Sully, Randall, George Sanderson they are higher in the hierarchy, hired to
scare children and to collect certain amount of power a day.

Assistants of scarers: Mike Wazowski , Charlie, Fungus they have to follow rules and
they have responsibilities such as make sure that doors are closed, bring new doors to
the stations and send them back in. They have to change the power containers if they are
full and replace for an empty one.

Every employee has a set of task that they need to accomplish from scaring, to
filling up paper work to cleaning floors or controlling the scale of target and profit of
day, month. Furthermore, there is one more feature that is classifying Monster Inc as a
bureaucratic organisation and that feature is authority. Max Weber (1978) contrasts
three types of authority for example: Charismatic, Traditional and Rational-legal.
Traditional is the one that fits into that factory as Mr. Waternoose got to manage it
because of the bloodline. This company is in his family for three generations. He is in the
factory everyday to watch the progress, control and make decisions. He is the highest in
the companyǯs hierarchy.

Before analyzing Monster Inc organizational culture it is worth to explain what it is.
Schein (1997) defines organisational culture as: Dzthe deep, basic assumption and beliefs
that are shared by organizational members. Schein differentiate between three levels of
culture.dz

Level 1 is called Artifacts. Monster Incorporated has artifacts such as building

architecture. It is a severe, large building. Interior is in the same colour. It has main area
like a lounge, where is a place of receptionist. In this part of building there is a section
for the best scarers of the month. It shows how company care about employee and
appreciate hard work. From the main area there are separate entries to different time
zones employee will be working in. There are many clocks showing actual time in that
time zone. It demonstrates good organisation in company. Another artifact that can be
seen is technology used in factory is new and itǯs working without any faults.

Level 2 represents Espoused Values. In Monster Inc it will be belief that scaring children
is for the good of Monster World. This company is nearly saint for them and top scarers
are becoming their leaders.

Level 3 refers to Basic Assumption. This level is defined by Schein (1997) as Dzthe core, or
essence of culture, represented in difficult to discern, largely unconscious and tacit
frames that subconsciously shapes values and frames.dz In Monster world it can be that
all monsters belief that factory is their only hope, the way to survival. Monsters need
power to perform a duty or to fulfil basic day to day needs. Other assumption that can
be found is the belief that children touch is going to kill you. Even when Sulley notice
that Boo is not dangerous that she has feelings the same as everybody he was still afraid
to touch her and he was keeping distance.

One more important issue that can be found is when Mr Waternoose is conspiring
with Randall and Fungus behind everybodyǯs back. They invented Scream Extractor that
can be really dangerous because the level this machine inhale children screams it can
even cause children death. This situation can be described in the Utilitarian theory. Mr
Waternoose is looking for the greater good of company that is why he makes a decision
to work with Randall on his evil plot. He thinks it is right thing to do, to safe factory and
provide more power into Monster World.
