Determined Students, Bold Leaders

To create bold leaders we require
committed students who want to grasp
the opportunities that we provide. If
you are ambitious, creative, competitive
and determined, yet realise the need for
collaboration, consensus building and
compromise, our MBA is for you. You
should also have a minimum of 3 years
managerial work experience.

You will work hard from the start but will

find the experience rewarding, challenging
and possibly exhausting!

Practice Led Teaching

We focus on enterprise and
entrepreneurship and work in partnership
with local, national and international
industry to facilitate change – and our
emphasis on practice led teaching ensures
that our MBA graduates see the benefit
of these partnership experiences in the
classroom.

Key entrepreneurial skills that we will help

you develop include:

Presentation Skills
You will engage in presentations both
individually and as groups to different
types of audience. We will help you
become an effective public speaker who
can confidently engage an audience and
effectively use a range of presentation aids.

Critical Analysis Skills

We will encourage you to think actively
rather than passively accepting what you
read and hear. To grasp entrepreneurial

opportunities you must be able to construct
a rational, logical, questioning approach
that is not distorted by your own bias – we
aim to turn you into a truly original critical
thinker.

Team Working Skills

Our MBA intake is small and highly
interactive – from the start of the
programme you will learn the skills that
allow a successful entrepreneur to lead and
influence the teams in which they work.
You will enhance your negotiation skills
to ensure that both you and your team
class sizes are small... perform to the maximum.

Study Trip
The Salford MBA includes a study trip to
a partner institution normally a University
also running an MBA but in a different,
perhaps international, location. All
MBA students and a selection of the
programme team will take part for
one week on activities as part of the
Entrepreneurial Leadership element of the
...engage to the MBA programme. The excursion will take
maximum place in Spring or early Summer and is an
ideal opportunity for students to spend
concentrated time together in a new and
exciting working environment.

Mixing cultural experiences with

challenging study opportunities, the MBA
study trip allows students to interact, share
ideas and learn about business in other
environments.

The study trip includes a full programme

of lectures and seminars from academic
lecturers and guest speakers, along with

Salford at a Glance
Salford is a metropolitan borough of
Greater Manchester within easy walking
distance of Manchester City Centre.
Manchester is a thriving, prosperous
northern hub considered the commercial
and cultural capital of the North of
England. The city is also the most
fashionable student location in Britain with
four universities - including two of the
UK’s biggest - and an associated wealth of
social, sporting and cultural activities.

The city is well served by bus, train and

tram, and the lack of hills means that
cycling is a viable alternative. Road and
rail links are good; Manchester is 184 miles
from London with trains
taking 2 hrs 10 minutes.

Strategy
Once you’ve grasped the nature of the
global market in which your organisation
operates and what assets you can deploy,
the next step is to distil these into a
cohesive strategy. It’s more than a mission
statement – your strategy sums up the
direction and corporate philosophy,
influencing every business decision with
clarity and insight.

In considering the role of strategy, you’ll be

challenged to think beyond pure business
rationales. Through extensive case studies,
you’ll be asked to analyse the implications
of a variety of business scenarios tackling
shifting economic and political climates
and seriously consider not just competing
stakeholder demands increasingly
important business dimensions of ethical
and social responsibility.

Entrepreneurial Leadership

Many students come back to Salford
Business School in person to see us and we
are always pleased to see them and hear
their news. We can supply references, visa
letters, evidence of scholarship and many
other services both social and official. We
continue to act as a source of professional

fosters reciprocal knowledge and insights
into evolving business practices.

During 2010 we had our first MBA baby;

Daniella was born on the 9th of July and
weighed 3.74kg - nearly 8lbs. Daniella was
born to Chioma Mgbeokwere who has since
taken interruption of study to care for her.
Chioma was at University lectures until the
week before delivery, and will return to
her MBA in time to complete her individual
consultancy project for an external client.

In December 2010 we had our first MBA

wedding between two students who met
on the MBA course. Mark Booth and Asiyeh
Touba were married in St Anne’s Church, St
Anne’s Square, Manchester and members
of the MBA staff and students attended
to give their congratulations. It really is a
community!

The student relationship with Salford

Business Trips
Business Trips
As part of the MBA, students undertake a
number of interesting and informative days
out to local businesses and organisations.
Recent trips include:

 Port Sunlight
 Adidas
 Hydes Brewery
 Pilkington Glass
 Jaguar Landrover

Pilkington UK

A hot and “shattering” day out!

Glass is increasingly used as an architectural
material around the world and the modern
glass industry owes much of it’s heritage
to Pilkington, plc. Based in St Helens, 30
minutes drive from Salford , Pilkington
(founded in 1826) has grown to become the
sole British producer of flat glass and is now
part of an international group.

Visiting the production lines is a hot

experience! Re-cycled and virgin materials
can be seen being fed into a giant furnace
at over 1000 degrees. The liquid glass floats
over a white hot bath of tin and appears
down the production line (over 400 metres
long), gradually cooling until being cut into
sheets automatically with flying knives.
When things go wrong they do so in a big
way with scrap glass being shattered and
fed back for re-cycling.

The scale of the place, the heat and

sound of breaking glass is something
to remember!

Business Trips
The Salford MBA 30
Salford Business School © 2011
The factory visit to Pilkington in St Helens
provides the opportunity to see how a
simple production of glass can become
an exceedingly profitable business when
innovation and management are skilfully
fused into creation of new products and
services.

The visit is concluded by a briefing in which

company’s experts outline production,
distribution and procurement questions and
student visitors have the opportunity to
pose searching questions.

“This
informative visit helped me to
understand their present and
future strategy framework.
We actually viewed how glass was made and sent
for commercial use through safety glasses and
wearing a safety jacket. I learnt that the process has
been continuously improved since it was developed
to benchmark and implement best practice. It
was my pleasure to visit environment friendly
Pilkington’s who are committed to recycling all
factory waste.“

Halewood
The Salford MBA is about practice led
teaching - this was evident when we visited
the former Ford Halewood factory complex
on Merseyside now owned by TATA the
Indian conglomerate producing the famous
marques of Jaguar Land Rover vehicles.

“In the classroom we studied the theory

of organisations and applications of
marketing, customer management and
HR. We discussed and debated case studies
identifying opportunities for the use of
new technologies and examples of lean
and agile working. Our tour of Halewood’s
operations highlighted the way practical
applications of academic theory had come
together on a commercial scale.

“We witnessed Kaizen in action, continual

improvement, examples of good practice
in HR where the organisation had shown
initiative to keep the factory operational
in times of low demand. We saw agile and
lean production - the opposite of the mass
production of the Ford Motor Company
days.

“As we toured thee factory we had

the opportunity to discuss with TATA’s
management team how we would deal
with the challenges posed by an ever
changing world.

“We soon realised that in just a few
weeks of commencing our course we were
quickly becoming aware and developing
the skills and knowledge that would give
us the confidence and edge to become
bold leaders who could participate in
the leadership and management of
organisations such as TATA Jaguar Land
Rover.”

“I chose Salford for my MBA for several
reasons - it was a new and progressive
course with a challenging blend of input,
integration and application. It also enabled
me to learn a lot about excellent private
sector organisational experience and
thinking and to apply it to the public sector.
It was a fundamental asset in shaping my
career and continues to help me in leading
a major, complex organisation.”

David Roberts
MBA Cohort 2008-2009
“For many years I had considered returning
to academia to complete a MBA. I chose
Salford because it offered a full time one
year course.

“We experienced a series of practical Master

classes delivered by tutors with both
academic and real world experience across
the full spectrum of management topics.
“a new and progressive These Master classes continued through out
course with a blend of the year and were supplemented with talks
input, integration and from external practitioners and numerous
application” visits to businesses and organisations in the
north of England.

“During the final semester we were

required to undertake a consultancy
assignment with a real business. This was
a wonderful end to the programme and
enabled me to turn my learning experience
into practical application.

“A feature of the Salford MBA is that the
intake is restricted which means there is
the chance to really build relationships
with other members of the course. For me
it meant having the chance to work closely
with colleagues of varied cultural and
industry backgrounds. As a result I am both
more confident and competent in working
with and within multi- cultural and multi
disciplinary teams.

”Studying for a MBA is a commitment.
For me it involved hard work, it involved
change and it involved massive learning.
Full time means full time and, for students
who are fully committed, the course
provides a springboard for personal
development and career opportunity.

“Highlights of the programme included the

Business Strategy Simulation which gave me
the opportunity to put into practice
the academic learning. It gave
me the opportunity to practice
leadership and as a result it has
given me the opportunity to pursue
a career option that I had never
dreamed of.

“In addition to the taught

programme Salford University

it’s students. The learning skills
development and the career
support I was given has been
invaluable.

“Salford was the right choice for me and I
would have no hesitation in recommending
the Salford MBA to other mature students.”

Vicki Harvey
MBA Cohort 2008-2009
Vicki arrived at Salford Business School with
a first degree in Biology and Biochemistry
(from Salford University) having applied
her expertise in the diverse fields of
agrochemicals, cancer research and forensic
science. This in addition to 10 years working
for the Forensic Science Service as a
manager of forensic training programmes.
She chose the Salford MBA to reinforce her
business and management experience and
to broaden her career prospects.

“The MBA was intensive, absorbing and

highly rewarding. The choice of modules
within the second semester allows a focus
according to your interests and combined
across the programme with a selection of
guest speakers and industry field visits, it
made for a good mix of theory and practice.
The business simulation was an enjoyable
exercise, giving chance to practice all that
learning and experience. Getting out
what you put in, our hard working team
managed to come out on top!

“It was a tough decision to leave my job for

further education, but have never regretted
the decision to return to Salford University,
the business school was highly supportive
and I have met some fantastic people from
the cohort. I have learnt so much and I am
looking forward to applying it in future
ventures.”

Susan Mawer of Stockport was
inspired to become a student

applying for university. Having
left school at 16, she longed to
test her potential and she chose
the challenge of a Master in

degree at Salford Business

Susan is a partner in ‘Credibility’,

a learning and development
consultancy that specialises
in training, coaching and
workplace mediation as well
as consultancy services helping
businesses to survive and
prosper. Susan now plans to help people
like her acquire the self-belief to look at
their ‘empty nest’ as a new beginning.

During the MBA, a work placement

devising a business plan for a leadership
organisation gave Susan the experience
to identify opportunities and expand her
workshops to help people achieve goals and
learn the skills needed for these challenging
times.

them to secure their future, especially when
seeking work. These are in addition to one-

“People ask me if I’m going to take time

Entry Requirements
Applicants should have an academic
qualification considered to be equivalent
to a UK second class, second division
(2.2) honours degree in any discipline of
study. Our experienced admissions team
understand international equivalencies and
can calculate these with a high degree of
accuracy.

Applicants must also be able to provide

evidence of at least three years of work
experience at a suitable managerial or
supervisory level. This information is
evidenced through C.V. and verifiable
references and it is essential that these are
included with any application.

As a postgraduate qualification applicants

must also satisfy the admissions team
that they have a suitable level of English
language capability. This can be represented
in a number of ways but is most commonly
evidenced through a GCSE or ‘O’ Level in
English. For applicants whose first language
is not English the University recognises a
wide range of English certificates but most
commonly IELTS – for which we expect an
overall score of 6.5.

The University of Salford is committed to

widening participation in Higher Education.
In the context of the MBA we acknowledge
significant terms of high level employment
