We know about the population increasing so, there is a lot of competition for
getting admission in private or Government college and Universities. This is the fact in
the case of ‘Higher Education’ every one wants to be graduation and post graduation, so
all thousand of students stand in a queue for job. What prospect is there after getting a
degree or degrees? Many of them have no hope for a bright future. A student, has spend a
major precious part of his life in obtaining degree or passing through any level of higher
education and whole has not received any guidance for the future or is unable to mark
himself, self-dependant should be consider education? We couldn’t get an appropriate
answer. This is what is happening. It appears that education on today has failed in given
direction, job, building a good character. So today need of Gandhi Education view or
thought on education system.
Prof. Huxely this is defined as “I hate man, I think, has had a liberal education
who has been so trained in youth that his body is the ready servant of his will, and does
with ease and pleasure, all the work that as a mechanism it is capable of whole intellect is
a clear, logic engine with all its part of equal strength and its smooth working
orders….whose mind is stored with a knowledge of the fundamental truth of nature……
whose passing are trained to came to hell by a vigorous will, the servant of a tender
conscience…..who has learnt to hate all violence’s and to respect others as himself. Such
an one and no other. I conceive, has a liberal education, for he is in harmony with nature.
He will make the best of her and she of him”
The definition given by Huxely seems to be contrast in some extend today
education system It is a fact that our system of education has been defective for the last
many decades Even after independence our leaders have not taken such a steps as they
should have to reform or education system. Since independence and till now much
improvement has been made in the sphere of education? Not much. It is an anomaly that

1
education has not been able to give right direction to our youth or to provide them
opportunities for their all round development or to make theme self-dependant.
“Red education consist not in packing the brain with so many fact and figures,
not in passing examination by reading numerous books but in developing characters”
The number of student for higher education increases every year and still
growing further but don’t make a good character. If we don’t awaken as the right time
and brings changes in our defective education system according to the view point of
Mahatma Gandhi. The situation would become so serious that we would not be able to
manage it. Education is not an aim in itself but rather than instrument and that type of
education can be called ‘Real Education’ which helps us in the building of sound
character. No one can truly claim that the present system of education in our schools
produces this result.
Mahatma Gandhi views on “Higher education”
1) 16to25 is the third stage, during which every young person should have on
education according to his or her whishes and circumstances.
2) During the second stage 9-16 education stands be self-supporting that is the child
all time he is learning is working upon some industry, the process of which will
meet the expenditure of the school.
3) Production starts from the very beginning, but during the first stage it does not
still catch up with the expenditure.
4) Teacher should be paid not very high salaries but living a wage. They should be
inspired by the spirit of service .It is a despicable thing to take any Tom, Dick, or
Harry as a teacher in the primary etc. All teachers should be men of characters.
5) Big and expensive buildings are not necessary for educational institutions.
6) Educations should be taught only as one several languages As Hindi is the
national language, English to be used in dealing with the other nations and
international commerce.
7) As for women’s education, 7 am sure whether it should be different from men’s
and when it should begin But 7cm strongly of the opinion that women should
have the same facilities as men and even special facilities where necessary.

2
8) There should be night school for ill trade adults, But I do not think that they much
be taught the three R’s, they much be helped to acquire general knowledge
through lectures etc, and if they wish we should arrange to teach them the three
R’s, also.
This is the view of Mahatma to “Higher education” but today condition of
each and every student should have a definite aim before he enters the field of higher
education otherwise its meaningless to pursue higher education. There is a general
thinking today that they would decide what they would do after having passed B.A or
MA other degrees. Because reason of the today education system and India. This
degree. Get only (literate) able to read and write not only getting the Job That the
student is sheer waste of time and money and they would not achieve anything except
groping in the dark so, Today need and Mahatma Gandhi view of education, because
Gandhi views of higher education are analyzed and reviewed in the perspective of
the circumstance prevailing today the above state educational system would be
according to hem It will be in proximity to his statement in which he expressed his
desire that by changing nature of college education, he would make confirm to the
need of the natures.
A present education of system we get only theoretical explanation more than
practical and exam oriented. It’s seems very harmful to student, because student study
for the examination and after they get the exam they leave it at an and haven’t took
seriously. But Mahatma Gandhi view on education is better and useful and rightly
applicable to today’s condition. Having become a graduate with technical knowledge
any young boy or girl would be capable and seeking as in India it will be not essay for
her/his to get a government job. He/she can also pursue his/her studies further while
doing his/her job. In this way being self dependant, a young boy/girl can continue
his/her studies further to fulfill his/her aim or object. “This is what Gandhi wanted”
one who is self employed will not have to run about after graduation or for post-
graduation or any other higher education degree. Apart from, he will not be required
to waste precious time and money. It will naturally brings down the unnecessary
crowding in college and universities, besides education will be purposeful and will be
able to guide in the right direction.

3
Conclusion- In conclusion Mahatma Gandhi view on “Higher Education” are no
doubt extremely valuable by keeping then, in mind, the system of education in India,
will have to be reformed. These views of Mahatma Gandhi can be our guide and can
contribute to the management to the management of our educational system.
