A Visit to Sharma Bee Farm 2
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
We, the students of BSc III (Medical, Information Technology) are extremely thankful to our class
teacher, Dr A P Singh, Associate Professor in Zoology, in taking keen interest in arranging our visit to
Sharma Bee Farm.
Our thanks are also due to Prof (Mrs.) Kuldip Kaur to have recommended our request to Principal
of the college for permission.
Prof. Gurmej Singh, Associate Professor in Punjabi, was kind enough to have arranged this visit
and also for explaining Bee Keeping in Vernacular.
It is not out of place to mention that, what ever we may read from books or internet, can not
replace the actual knowledge acquired in the field. Visuals of the bee farm will remain imprinted in our
mind for the rest of our life.

INTRODUCTION
To full-fill curricular requirement of the Punjab University for Paper on Applied Entomology,
present visit to Sharma Bee Farm was undertaken on 11.03.2011. The Bee farm is located on other side of
the Sukhna Lake, close to Flood Gates/ Head Works, at Saketri, Panchkula. Students were taken to the
farm by Dr A P Singh and Prof Gurmej Singh in their Cars. Bee farm happens to be on left side of the
Road leading to Rajiv Gandhi Technology Park. It took us just 15 minutes to reach the farm from the
college.
Approximately, 200 Box Colonies are established in an open field. For safe storage of Comb Frames and
Extractor, and also for resting of Beekeepers on duty, tentements have been set up in the field. Forage
crops such as Mustard and Eucalyptus was noted growing nearby.
Photographs of our visit to Bee Farm are given in succeeding pages. These have been appropriately
captioned to explain the visuals.
Visit has been very fruitful for the students; as has provoked some of them to try the beekeeping at
commercial level in the future.
