You are on page 1of 1

1.

The place we search for journals and book chapters is the ATLA religion
database. Type in: http://search.epnet.com
2. In the USER Id box, type s5105972. In the password box, type password.
3. In the check boxes, select ATLA Religion Database. Then click Continue at
the bottom of the page.
4. In the search boxes, you can search on various things, like the full text of the
article, the author of the article, the title, etc.
5. To find journal articles on a chosen passage, there are two fruitful approaches
a. You can search by Scripture Citation (select this option from the drop
down menu). Say you are researching Colossians 1:3-14, your best
approach is to do a search on each individual verse in your passage.
i. So first, search on Colossians 1:3
ii. Then Colossians 1:4
iii. And so on
iv. Please note, the results found may be an article or essay that
uses a number of different texts from the Bible, not just your
one. Also, some of the articles/essays will be on very minor
issues which do not have much relevance to your paper.
b. For each of your searches, new results will come up from journals, or
from chapters in books. For each result you would like to keep, click
on the button which says “Add to Folder”. This will then store the
result in a list you can look at later on.

6. When you have finished searching, click on Folder up the top of your screen.
All of the results you have selected will be found there. You can choose to
print/email/save your results for later reference. I find emailing most helpful.
7. You then need to go and find these resources in our library.
a. If they are from a journal, then you need to check whether we stock
that journal, and whether we have that edition in (many of our journals
have incomplete coverage).
b. If they are a chapter in a book, you need to search for the book on the
libraries catalogue, to see if we stock it.
