Accommodation in the Paris Region for Foreign Exchange
Students
However, you should be aware that the University halls are old buildings, especially the
halls at Antony, which date from 1959. There have been very few improvements and
renovations since their construction and they are not particularly comfortable. The rooms
are furnished with only the basics and the showers are communal. Each floor has only a
small kitchen and sometimes a washing machine, but this is not always guaranteed.
If you choose this type of accommodation Université Paris-Sud 11 will undertake to find
you a place in University halls, on condition that your application is received early enough
(i.e. before all the places are taken).
For your own information, the price per month in 2003-2004 was €172 (deposit of € 267).
There are 7 university residences, 4 of which are reserved for students from the Orsay

Several choices are open to you: student hostel, private rented accommodation,
University halls or elsewhere. The different options are described briefly below, to help
you in your choice. Private rented accommodation is generally the most comfortable.
• Independent Apartment
The prices start from around €350 per month for a room, to around €425 per
month for a studio flat. You will be asked for the first month in advance, together
with one month's rent as a deposit and agency or signing fees.
Although the total cost (rent plus charges such as water, electricity etc.) is
relatively high, this option is by far and away the most comfortable. You may also
have the right to housing benefit (Allocation Logement; ALS), which should reduce
costs (see the end of this section).

• Student Hostels
Student hostels are an excellent transition between family life and the autonomy
of living in your own apartment. Although there is no deadline for requesting a
place, most of the rooms are taken up to six months in advance.
Prices depend on the services offered: half-board, full-board, or breakfast only.
Where to go:

Open Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10am to 6pm, Thursdays from

• University residences
Residences managed by private organisations: these residences provide an
excellent compromise between C.R.O.U.S. university halls and independent housing. For
a studio, the prices vary between €300 and €550 per month.
Where to go:
La Mutuelle des Etudiants (LMDE)

• Housing insurance
Whatever type of housing you choose, you must present the organisation or person
housing you with a certificate of housing insurance (against water damage, fire, etc.).
If you already have this type of insurance cover in your own country, you should check that
this cover also applies to your stay in France. If so, you should ask your insurer for a
certificate translated into French, specifying the cover provided and your address in France.
If you are not already insured, you can obtain insurance when you arrive in France from:

Preparing for your stay
First, you have to contact the International Office : agnes.vannereau@u-psud, to obtain
all documents useful for your registration.
Be careful the following documents must be completed and sent by post (by 30th
June at the latest for students beginning their courses in the first semester and by 30th
November for students beginning their courses in the second semester). They must be
signed by the ERASMUS co-ordinator of your home university.
¾ An exchange programme application form:
This form must be completed carefully, especially the section concerning the list of
courses (ECTS) that you would like to take at Université Paris-Sud 11. It
should be signed by your tutor/supervisor from your home university who
agrees, under the exchange programme guidelines, to certify this study period as
valid towards your degree or diploma.
¾ A University residence application form, if you have chosen this type of
accommodation (see section on accommodation).
The International Relations Board will return this form to you indicating the dates of
your stay and the residence in which you will be staying. These dates must be
strictly adhered to because they correspond to the availability of your reserved
room.
In case of changes, please inform the International Relations Board as soon as
possible.
• Language Preparation
All courses are given in French. It is therefore vital that you take an intensive French
language course at your university to bring you up to speed.
The language laboratory at the Orsay campus organises two-sessions intensive French
language course, for beginners and intermediate level French, at the start of
September. Attendance on the first day, when the level of your French will be assessed, is
obligatory.

FINALLY, don't forget that during your stay at Université Paris-Sud you
retain student status at your home university.
You must therefore register at your home university as normal
before you leave for France

Things to do
on Arrival
at Université Paris-Sud 11
16
Things to do
Firstly, please inform us, by email, of the date on which you are arriving
(agnes.vannereau@u-psud.fr). On arrival, you should do the following, in this order:
Move in to your apartment
Contact the course director
Complete administrative registration
Request a “carte de sejour” (if needed)
• Accommodation
If you have opted for a room in a University residence (CROUS/UPS11), you should go to
the residence at the time indicated on the confirmation of reservation sent to you by the
International Relations Board, or by the CROUS (if you have opted for social housing in
halls)
Your room is reserved for the duration of your stay. If you intend to leave sooner than
expected, you must give at least 1 months’ notice to the International Relations Board.
The rent payments for the entire planned duration of your stay may be claimed
from you by the CROUS.
• Administrative registration
Although already registered at your home university, you should also register at Université
Paris-Sud 11. You should register at the school office of your faculty or IUT (contact details
in the last section). This registration will allow you to obtain a student card, admissions
certificate, and access to the University library and refectory.

Health
and
18
Health and social security cover
Université Paris-Sud has an infirmary for emergency treatment and offers a
preventive medicine service. The service is free, but does not deliver prescriptions or
drugs. Instead, it offers a diagnostic service and helps you to choose a doctor.
www.u-psud.fr/ja.nsf/vie_etud.htm!OpenPage#medecine
The European medical insurance card has been available in France since June 2004 and
replaces the E111 form and other forms (E110, E119, E128) previously in use.
For more information see: www.ameli.fr/47/DOC/1376/article.html (in French)
Students from the European Economic Area (EEA) are exempt from student
contributions if they have a European medical insurance card. They are also exempt if
they have a certificate of affiliation to a conventional medical insurance scheme or a
private insurance covering them for the duration of their university stay. For students
from Quebec: form SE401 Q 106
Exchange students from outside the EEA are exempt from student contributions if they
have a certificate of affiliation to a medical insurance scheme in their home country. In
all cases, the certificate must be in English, and, if possible, translated into French.
19
Students benefiting from French Student Social Security must choose whether
to be attached to Centre 601 or 61 at the time of registration. The selected centre will
then send you a social security card. On presentation of this card in pharmacies, you
will only have to pay that part of the cost of the medicines not covered by the Social
Security.
Students benefiting from voluntary insurance should contact their insurer directly.
