FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

& TECHNOLOGY

In order to advance research in the broad sphere of Multimedia and to support faculty members to innovate and create new
technologies, products and processes, Faculty of Engineering and Technology (FET) has set-up two Research Centers. The common
objective of the Research Centers is to group academics and students with similar interests in a specified field of research and to
start working on identified research projects.

These two Research Centers are:

Centre for Mechanical Engineering Sciences (CEMES)
Centre for Robotics & Electrical Systems (CRES)

The Centre for Mechanical Engineering Sciences (CEMES)

CNC machining center Wind Tunnel at Fluid Mechanical Lab

Aim: To facilitate research in various fields of mechanical engineering and, as much as possible, to align it with the MMU R&D
Roadmap.

Activities:
• Providing technical consultancy to domestic industrial enterprises.
• Conducting short courses in certain fields of mechanical engineering.
• Collaborating with local or overseas universities/research institutions.

Total number of members: 17

Research Groups:
• Renewable Energy Systems group
• Composite Materials Engineering group
• Advanced Materials & Manufacturing group

Centre for Robotics and Electrical Systems (CRES)
Aim: To focus on research and development in the areas of:
• Advanced robotics, industrial automation and instrumentation for the advancement of knowledge in these fields and
the development of technologies based on the knowledge gained.
• Electric energy and their applications for the benefit of humanities in general and manufacturing industries in particular.

Total number of members: 30

Research Groups:
1. Ubiquitous Robotics.
The focus is on the design of intelligent environment (ambience)
through ubiquitous computing and home personal robots.

2. Humanoid Intelligence.
The focus is on incorporation of a layer of intelligence or cognition into robots to enable them to deal with missing or
uncertain information, to modify their behavior according to the current tasks and situation and to detect and possibly
recover from exceptional situations and failures.

3. Machine Condition Monitoring.

The focus is on development of the architecture for a Smart Machine Condition Monitoring
System which allows users to consolidate performance data of their geographically dispersed
equipments.

4. Electrical Energy, Machines, and Power Systems.

The focus is on research and consultancy in the core area of efficient, reliable and quality electric
energy supply to industries within MSC to fulfill MALAYSIA VISION 2020.
