What is ProSave? 1
Functionality
ProSave provides all functions necessary to transfer data between the configuration
computer and the HMI device.
● Installation and removal of drivers and options
● Information pertaining to installed and installable options on an HMI device.
● Data backup via backup/restore
● Operating system transfer for the following devices:
– Windows CE-based devices
– OP 73micro, OP 73A, TP 177micro, TP 177A, OP 77A
● Transfer of authorizations
ProSave is integrated into ProTool/WinCC flexible and can also be installed as a standalone
solution. Thus, in the case of service with a standalone installation, e.g. after the swapping of
devices without the use of ProTool/WinCC flexible, you can restore to a target device the
original data that was previously backed up using ProSave.
You can set any regional language available in ProTool/WinCC flexible for the ProSave user
interface.

Integrated mode
ProSave is installed on the configuration computer as part of a standard ProTool/WinCC
flexible installation. The entire functionality of ProSave is available on the configuration
computer within ProTool/WinCC flexible by calling the "Project ► Transfer" command. Thus,
you do not need to open a separate tool.

Note
ProSave running on devices with Windows CE operating system only supports standalone
mode for USB/PPI connections.

In integrated mode, the ProSave dialogs are started from within a project. This has the
advantage that all necessary specifications (e.g. target device, transfer settings, language
setting) are transferred from the project.

Standalone mode
You can also install ProSave from the ProTool/WinCC Flexible Standalone CD and run it
without ProTool/WinCC flexible installation, for example, for service tasks.
Standalone installation requires explicit device and transfer settings in the ProSave interface.

Installation of options 4
Available options
ProSave allows you to install additional options supplied with ProTool/WinCC flexible at a
later time. Likewise, you can install options purchased separately from ProTool/WinCC
flexible at a later time.
These additional options are then available to you in your project on the HMI device, e.g.:
● Soft-SPS WinAC/MP

Note
The installation of options is only possible for the Windows CE-based devices with the
exception of the TP 170A.

Installing an option
The installation of an option takes place in ProSave integrated mode within a configuration.
The options that can be installed depend on the target device of the configuration selected.
The options that can be installed are displayed. The connection settings are already preset
in the communications settings of the configuration.
Select the "File ► Transfer ► Options" menu command in ProTool/WinCC flexible to install
new options in integrated mode.
In standalone ProSave, specify the target device and the connection setting on the "General"
tab. Install the new options from the "Options" tab.

Note
If you transfer an option to a device that is not properly configured, "Could not run
application! Starting transfer" may appear once the transfer is complete.
This alarm refers only to the missing configuration. The option is transferred without error.

Data backup (backup/restore) 5
Archiving data with ProSave
With ProSave, you have the option of easily and centrally archiving data, even without
ProTool/WinCC flexible. You can thus quickly resume operation after a system failure or
when a device was replaced. The backed-up data is simply transferred to the new target
device and thus restored to its original state.
A backup of a device can take place and be restored on any storage medium (restore), e.g.
on a data server.

Note
For Windows CE devices, a backup/restore can be performed independently of ProSave by
backing up the data directly from the device to an external storage medium. External storage
medium are, for example, memory cards or USB mass storage devices. For additional
information, refer to the appropriate product manuals.

For Windows CE devices, a compressed file with the extension *.psb is created during
backup. For graphics and line devices, a compressed file with the extension *.psr is created.

Note
You can continue to use compressed backup files from line and graphics devices that were
created with an older version of ProSave. You must change the extension of the backup file
to *.psr before the restore procedure.

Backup/restore allows you to backup or restore various data. The data that can be backed
up is not freely selectable. The data types depend on the target device of the configuration:

Observer the following notes when executing a "Complete" Backup/Restore operation:
• License Keys are included in the backup. ProSave checks during the Restore whether
the License Keys are available on the HMI device and in the backup data. You have the
following options in this situation:
– Cancel the Restore operation if you first want to backup the License Keys of the HMI
device.
You have to restart Restore.
– Continue the Restore operation if you prefer to overwrite the License Keys of the HMI
device.
• A "complete restore" operation irrevocably overwrites all existing device data, including
the operating system.
• If the restore operation is interrupted you must once again download the operating
system to the HMI device via the serial port or via the Ethernet port by using the
bootstrap mechanism before you can initiate a new restore operation.
• All installed options are included in the backup. The program always backs up all data of
the option which are retained after "POWER OFF".

ProSave
14 System Manual, 06/2008, Printout of the Online Help
Data backup (backup/restore)

Note
This note applies to the following HMI devices:
• Windows CE HMI devices with the exception of series 177, 277 and 377
• OP 73micro, OP 73A, TP 177micro, TP 177A, OP 77A
Authorizations and license keys are lost during a "complete" backup/restore operation.

Note
When operating with line devices, the restore program checks whether the configured recipe
structure matches the data records backed up on the device. If the recipes to be restored do
not match the configured structure the program generates an error message with reference
to the corresponding recipe number and then restarts the device.

Backup/Restore in integrated mode

Run Backup/Restore in integrated mode by selecting the "File ► Transfer ► Backup" or "File
► Transfer ► Restore" command in ProTool/WinCC flexible.

Backup/Restore in standalone mode

Set the transfer parameters and the device selection in the ProSave interface using the
"General," "Backup" and "Restore" tabs when running ProSave in standalone mode.

Note
It is advisable to run the backup and restore operation via USB or Ethernet, as these ports
provide the fastest data transmission rates.

ProSave
System Manual, 06/2008, Printout of the Online Help 15
Transfer of operating systems 6
Transferring operating systems
An operating system transfer is only supported by the following HMI devices:
● Window CE-based HMI devices
● OP 73micro, OP 73A, TP 177micro, TP 177A, OP 77A
Include the current operating systems of the HMI devices when you install ProTool or
WinCC flexible on the configuration PC.
If the target device has a version of the operating system that is older than that required by
the configuration (ProTool/WinCC flexible version), an message appears during the transfer
of the configuration indicating that the target device must be upgraded.
If the project transfer cannot be performed due to the wrong operating system version, then
the transfer is terminated as a rule. The operating system transfer must be explicitly
triggered by the user.

Note
Transferring operating systems with MP 377 on PROFIBUS
Due to the size of the image and the baud rates available at PROFIBUS, an image transfer
at the MP 377 using PROFIBUS can take up to an hour.
Transfer operating systems or images via USB or Ethernet.

Note
An operating system transfer deletes all data on the target device, including existing
Authorizations and License Keys. You should therefore start by returning the Authorizations
or License Keys to the license disk or to the storage location of the License Keys.
You should export user data saved on the internal flash memory, such as passwords and
recipes, to an external data memory and then reload it to the HMI device after the operating
system has been transferred.

Transferring operating systems in integrated mode

If ProSave is operating in integrated mode you initiate the transfer of an operating system by
selecting the "Project ► Transfer ► Update Operating System" menu command.

Transferring operating systems in standalone mode

If you are operating ProSave in standalone mode, transfer an operating system using the
"Update" feature on the "OS Update" tab.

ProSave
System Manual, 06/2008, Printout of the Online Help 17
Transfer of operating systems

Note
If the transfer of the operating system is terminated prematurely, there is no longer an
operating system on the target device. In this case, you can only download an operating
system by activating the "bootstrap" mechanism.

Restore factory settings

With an operating system transfer, communication between the configuration computer and
the target device take place via the operating system of the target device. The "Restore
factory settings" mechanism, however, involves ProSave communication with the boot loader
of the target device.
Depending on the HMI device, the communication is possible via the following connections:
● Serial connection via a USB/PPI cable
● Via Ethernet for HMI devices without serial ports
Set the type of communication on the "General" tab.
The advantage of the operating system transfer using the "Restore factory settings"
mechanism is that the transfer can be performed regardless of the state or version of the
operating system of the target device. Once the transfer has been started in ProSave, the
target device must be switched off and on (booted) so that the target device can make
contact by means of the boot loader.

Note
The data transfer rate in serial communication or with USB/PPI cable is lower compared to
USB or Ethernet communication.

Transfer of authorizations 7
Introduction
Some options for HMI devices with Windows CE are provided with license protection. You
transfer the authorization from the computer to the device with a license disk and you can
also transfer it back to the disk again.
During a backup, authorizations are not saved on a device.

Note
The transfer of authorizations is only possible for the Windows CE-based devices with the
exception of the TP 170A.

Transferring authorizations in integrated mode

Start the transfer of authorizations in integrated mode by selecting the "File ► Transfer ►
Authorize" menu command.

Transferring authorizations in standalone mode

If you run ProSave as a standalone, transfer authorizations via the "Authorize" tab.

Note
The return transfer of the authorization can only be performed via the disk, from which the
authorization was installed or on which it is still installed.

Note
Transfer the new license keys using the Automation License Manager.

Transfer via USB 8
Introduction
A USB connection enables you to connect a PC with ProSave installation and an HMI
device. For this you require a suitable USB host adapter and a USB driver, which is provided
on the ProTool/WinCC flexible CD 2. Transfer via USB is only possible on Windows CE-
based HMI devices with a USB port.

Note
Only use the USB driver provided on the ProTool/WinCC flexible CD 2, as otherwise this
may result in problems during transfer of the projects.

Data transfer between a PC and an HMI device using USB host adapters from various
manufacturers has proven successful . More detailed information on the adapters used and
the manufacturers/suppliers can be found on the following Web page:
http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/de/19142034

Transfer via USB

The following conditions must be met to ensure successful data transfer using a USB host
adapter:
● You must use a USB host adapter.
● You must have installed the driver provided on the ProTool/WinCC flexible CD 2.
● The HMI used must be based on Windows CE and must have a USB port.
An overview of the Windows CE-based HMI-devices can be found in the chapter "What is
ProSave?".
When all the requirements have been met, the PC can be connected to the HMI device and
data transfer can be started.
