OFFICERS IN THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH

OFFICER TYPES AND GENERAL OBLIGATIONS

Each Student Government Officer must be administered an oath of office before


beginning his/her term of service, and that term of service expires upon the adjournment
sine die of the Student Government Senate.

Senators are either elected by the Student Body or approved by the Student Senate as an
at-large Senator. Each Senator is required to be part of two (2) SGA Committees during
his/her tenure and is required to write at least two (2) pieces of legislation per semester of
service. The minimum requirements to become a Senator of the Student Government are
as follows:

a. Must be eligible to vote in the SGA General Elections;


b. Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA* at UNCP.

*First-semester Freshmen shall not be held to the minimum GPA requirement, however, after their first
semester, their GPA shall be reviewed by the SGA Advisor.

Responsibilities of a Student Senator:

a. Be a member of one of the three (3) SGA Committees;


b. Write two (2) pieces of legislation per semester of service;
c. Attend the weekly SGA Senate meetings;
d. Provide a bridge between the Student Body and the SGA Senate and
Executive Board.

The Student Body Secretary is not elected, but appointed by the Student Government
President and approved by 2/3 of the Senate. The minimum requirements to be appointed
as the Student Body Secretary are as follows:

a. Must be eligible to vote in the SGA General Elections;


b. Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA at UNCP.

Responsibilities of the Student Body Secretary:

a. Maintain the SGA Senate meeting minutes and the SGA Executive Board
meeting minutes;
b. Be responsible for providing minutes to the SGA, the SGA Advisor, and the
Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.

The Public Relations Officer is not elected, but appointed by the Student Government
President and approved by 2/3 of the Senate. The minimum requirements to be appointed
as the Public Relations Officer are as follows:
a. Must be eligible to vote in the SGA General Elections;
b. Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA at UNCP.

Responsibilities of the Public Relations Officer:

a. Serve as the spokesperson of the Student Government Association;


b. Provide information to the Pine Needle regarding Student Government
Association activities and events;
c. Update and maintain the SGA OrgSync webpage, the SGA Facebook page,
and the SGA Bulletin Board.

The Chief of Staff is not elected, but appointed by the Student Government President and
approved by 2/3 of the Senate. The minimum requirements to be appointed as the
Executive Assistant are as follows:

a. Must be eligible to vote in the SGA General Elections;


b. Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA at UNCP.

Responsibilities of the Chief of Staff:

a. Serve as a non-voting ex-officio member of the Executive Board;


b. Have authority over reports submitted by students appointed by the Student
Government President to various University committees;
c. Serve as a project manager at the request of the Student Government
President;
d. Coordinate logistics for Student Government activities.

The Student Body Treasurer is elected during the Spring Semester General Elections.
The Student Body Treasurer is part of the Executive Board. The minimum requirements
to be elected as the Student Body Treasurer are as follows:

a. Must be eligible to vote in the SGA General Elections;


b. Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA at UNCP;
c. Must have at least three (3) semesters or forty-five (45) hours at UNCP;
d. Must have been a Senator for at least one complete academic semester prior to
filing for candidacy;
e. May not be President, Vice President, or Treasurer of any other UNCP
chartered organization on campus while holding the position of Student Body
Treasurer.

Responsibilities of the Student Body Treasurer:

a. Serve as a non-voting ex-officio member of the SGA Interclub Committee;


b. Present a minimum of two (2) budget reports per quarter of the academic year;
c. Work closely with the SGA Advisor regarding the current SGA budget.

The Student Government Vice President is elected during the Spring Semester General
Elections together with the Student Government President in a ticket. The Student
Government Vice President is part of the Executive Board and is also an ex-officio non-
voting member of the Student Senate serving as the Senate President. The minimum
requirements to be elected as the Student Government Vice President are as follows:

a. Must be eligible to vote in the SGA General Elections;


b. Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA at UNCP;
c. Must have at least three (3) semesters or forty-five (45) hours at UNCP;
d. Must have been a Senator for at least one complete academic semester prior to
filing for candidacy;
e. May not be President, Vice President, or Treasurer of any other UNCP
chartered organization on campus while holding the position of Student
Government Vice President.

Responsibilities of the Student Government Vice President:

a. Preside over the Student Senate meetings;


b. Train new Senators;
c. Appoint Senators in various SGA Committees;
d. Provide any legislation passed at the Student Senate to the Student
Government President within three (3) days of passage;
e. Represent/replace the Student Government President in his/her absence.

The Student Government President is elected during the Spring Semester General
Elections together with the Student Government Vice President in a ticket. The Student
Government President serves as an ex-officio voting member of the University Board of
Trustees. The minimum requirements to be elected as the Student Government President
are as follows:

a. Must be eligible to vote in the SGA General Elections;


b. Must have a 2.5 cumulative GPA at UNCP;
c. Must have at least three (3) semesters or forty-five (45) hours at UNCP;
d. Must have been a Senator for at least one complete academic semester prior to
filing for candidacy;
e. May not be President, Vice President, or Treasurer of any other UNCP
chartered organization on campus while holding the position of Student
Government President.

Responsibilities of the Student Government President:

a. Serve as an ex-officio voting member of the University Board of Trustees;


b. Review any legislation passed by the Student Senate within ten (10) days of
receipt;
c. Preside over the SGA Executive Board meetings;
d. Provide reports to the SGA Advisor and to the Vice Chancellor for Student
Affairs bi-weekly;
e. Provide reports to the Chancellor monthly.

Student Government Association Senate Committees

Academic and Student Affairs (ASA)


This committee combines what was previously three committees (food, student issues,
and academic affairs), focusing primarily on issues pertinent to student life on campus,
this committee works closely with administration to promote the interests of the student
body. Some key events the committee holds are Student Issues Forums and monthly
NightHawks. This committee shall meet with the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and
the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs regularly.
 
Government Operations Committee (Gov Ops) 
A combination of what was previously Constitution and Elections, this committee will
focus on editing and promoting the Student Government Constitution as well as
overseeing both Fall and Spring Elections. The Government Operations Committee shall
cover any SGA-related event or activity, including but not limited to General Elections,
constitutional review, and budget discussions. This committee shall meet with the
Student Government President and the SGA Advisor regularly. 
  

University and Community Relations Committee (UCR) 


The University and Community Relations Committee shall cover University and
community related issues and initiatives through the SGA, including but not limited to
advertising, community service, and student organization relations. This committee shall
meet with the Vice Chancellor of University and Community Relations, Associate
Director of Student Life, and the Student Government Public Relations Officer regularly.
