Entry-level Local Area Network Design

Case Study

A Proposed Design Submitted to the School of Information Technology

In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements of the Degree

Bachelor of Science in Information Technology

Mapua Institute of Technology

Overview and Objectives:
This final case study allows the students to build and configure a complex
network using skills gained throughout the whole Cisco Network Academy
Program. The design will span and include entry-level design and implementation
of local area networks,

The case study scenario describes the project in general terms, and will explain
why the network is being built. Following the scenario, the project is broken into
a number of phases, each of which has a detailed list of requirements. It is
important to read and understand each requirement to make sure that the project is
completed accurately.

The following objectives are as follows:

Design and apply a logical addressing scheme for the network

Correctly design and configure Local Area Networks using entry level
routing concepts.
Create and apply basic security measures on the appropriate areas in the
network.
Present and defend the proposed design in front of a panel.
Provide Detailed Documentation in a prescribed form as listed in the
deliverables section.

1
Scenario
XYZ Bank needs a network to be designed and implemented. The company spans
a large geographical coverage, specifically all over the Philippine archipelago.
Transactions for each area of the network are critical similar to every bank.

There are a total of three sites for the company. There is a single head office for
the company. The head office is located in Makati and hosts a large and complex
local area network. All the departments of the bank are located in the main office,
hence the complexity of its LAN. Its departments are to be segmented and
managed according to their logical functions. It also serves as the primary hub for
the other offices. The data center or telecommunications room is also located in
the head office. The data center hosts all the servers used by the company’s
employees. The gateway for the internet is also supposed to be located in the head
office’s data center.

The regional/division office is then connected to the branch, and the branch also
has a link to the head office. Each division office also has its respective
departments that are to be considered in LAN design. The branches need no
segmentation so a flat network for each is to be implemented.

An ISP will provide the internet connectivity and the public address to be used by
the company.

2
Phase 1: Logical Diagram
Before considering the logical diagram, the requirements throughout the case
study should first be examined. After the said analysis, the proponents may then
select from the variety of network models, either using one or two models
depending on their design.

On the diagram, proper icons must be used in representing the intermediary and
end devices as well as their physical connection. The hostnames, interface names
of the network equipment should be clearly stated. IP addresses assignments
should be described throughout the network. Routing areas should also be
described in the diagram. The nature and characteristics of the physical layout
should also be indicated on the diagram.

3
Phase 2: Addressing
The company network requirement spans a single head office, 1 division/regional
offices and 1 branch office. All offices have their equivalent local area networks.
Even though private network addresses (172.20.0.0) are to be used for the whole
network, efficient IP address allotment is still to be considered. A 100% growth
requirement is to be considered in addressing the LANs.

The company requests that local area network for the Makati head office to be
segmented. The networks are also to be classified according to their logical
functions. The same requirement applies to the less complex regional/division
office. The branch office, on the other hand has only a flat network as their LAN.
The host requirements for each office are described in tables 2.1, 2.2, 2.3.

The Wide Area Network interfaces (serial links), depending on the technology to
be used should be considered in addressing.

A management network must also be considered in addressing. This is used for

monitoring and maintaining the network equipment. The management subnetwork
should contain at least 100 hosts. The servers located in the data center of the
head office also need to have a separate network from the LANs. At least 10 hosts
must be considered for this network. Both networks are part of the 100% growth
requirement.

A public pool of IP addresses are purchased by the company for internet

connectivity. The pool ranges from 58.14.56.2-58.14.56.31. These are to be used
for the servers and the router interface connected to the internet.

Phase 3: Structured Cabling
This phase mostly focuses on switching implementation for the three office levels,
namely, Head office, regional office, and branch office level. Include the physical
placement or the floor plan of the network equipment for this study.

The head office cabling structure should be carefully thought and design. The
cable runs and cut sheets should be documented. The distances and the physical
layout of the cable runs for each floor must be illustrated on the diagrams. Only
the head office requires study for it’s cabling structure.

Redundancy and resiliency should be used in the network, as well as the

technologies to implement scalability and reliability. This should be discussed in
narrative in the documentation.

Lastly, all the routers and switches used in the network should be described in
tabular format with all the technologies indicated for each one.

Phase 4: Routing
In this phase, the proponents will select and justify the routing method or methods
used in the study. Implement static routing on all three sites. The routing table for
each router be documented.

Another logical diagram must be provided to indicate what areas of the network a
routing or several routing method are implemented. The diagram should include
the whole network topology.

9
Phase 5: Security
The local area network should be secured with technologies and mechanisms
learned from the CCNA1 course. This includes implementing passwords, banners
and descriptions on all intermediary devices. These are necessary to prevent
access from unauthorized users.

10
Phase 6: Network Software and Equipment
In this section, the proponents will provision the equipment for the LAN design.
Most of the equipment will be the routers, switches and modular interfaces. The
features of the platforms or firmware installed on the above mentioned network
equipment and the model features should also be described in detail in this phase.
Estimates for the concluding costs must be included here, in tabular format.

There is no need to specify the equipment that is to be provided by the ISP. The
only responsibility in this study is beyond the demarcation point (CSU/DSU,
modem, etc.) of the provider.

Servers, firewalls, IP phones and workstation specifications are not needed in this
study. They are to be provided by the company itself.

The company also needs a proposal for the network software to be used for
maintaining and managing the network. The various options should be compared
and later justified in a tabular format.

11
Phase 7: Testing and Baselining
This phase determines if the network is feasible for all the requirements of the
company. Test tools like ping and traceroute in different areas of network must be
used in testing the connectivity. The results and procedures must be described in
narrative form and presented in tabular formats using Test Scripts.

A hard copy of all the devices running configurations should be included in the
documentation of the study.

12
Phase 8: Final Recommendation
In this final phase, the proponents will present further study for their network
proposal. Limitations of the CCNA-CNAP program and its topics will be
discussed here and the proponents will conduct research for each area bottleneck.

13
Documentation Format
The final documentation should include the following format:
• Headers (Times New Roman, Size 18, Bold)
• Body Text (Times New Roman, Size 12, Bold, 0.5” left indent from the
margin)
• Diagrams and tables (Times New Roman, Size 12)
