Insulation For Less, the official Prodex site is holding out Prodex Total Insula

tion – an innovative solution to all your insulation needs.

ICC-ES recognized, ENERGY STAR qualified and eligible for 2011 tax credit, Prode
x Total Insulation offers a fantastic mix of a reflective insulator, radiant bar
rier and vapour barrier. Its applications include pole barns, metal buildings, a
ttics, garages, roofs, basements, crawlspaces, under concrete, radiant floors an
d more.
Unlike other types of insulations which resist or impede the flow of warm air, a
reflective insulator reflects back infra-red rays (the heat component of sunray
s) and prevents it from penetrating the building. Similarly, it reflects back ra
diant heat into the house to prevent it from escaping. Each unit of radiant heat
energy reflected away from your home in summer and back inside during winter me
ans less operation of your air conditioning and heating systems, less wear and t
ear on your equipment and less money you pay as utility costs. Studies show that
an attic radiant barrier can save as much as 15 per cent on air conditioning en
ergy costs.
Prodex performs great in extreme temperatures. It keeps your structure cool in t
he summer and warm in the winter, thus reducing your heating and cooling costs.
It is the best metal building insulation and is ideal for roofs and attics. Cove
ring every area of your home, it has a 5mm (1/4 inch) closed cell polyethylene f
oam sandwiched between two 99% pure aluminium, low emissivity surfaces.
The technical specificities of Prodex are as under:
1. Reflective insulation or R value of 15.67.
2. An excellent radiant barrier; reflects 97% of radiant heat
3. Vapour barrier 0.033 gr/m2hkPa

The project was done for the Sugar Cane Industry League Costa Rica (LAICA). The
customer required its five acre sugar storage to have minimum humidity and tempe
rature level. Sugar can turn brown when exposed to temperatures higher than 86° F
(30° C) and can coagulate under high humidity levels. The ambient temperature at t
he spot is extreme and can easily get up to 100° F (38° C) and humidity levels can g
o as high as 90%. In the mornings, when the outside temperature can be down to 5
0° F (10° C) and the inside temperature of the storage is still higher, there will b
e condensation on the walls and this can damage the sugar. Controlling this size
of storage in such environment by air-conditioning is nearly impossible. The en
ergy costs would be huge. Our engineers recommended creating a total building en
velope using AD10 (10 mm polyethylene foam with aluminium foil on both sides) in
the roof as well as the walls. AD10 has excellent properties and has a very hig
h and constant thermal resistance as a vapour retarder (0.05 perms). These two c
haracteristics prevent the inside vapour from coming to its dew point and conden
sing on the walls. An additional property of AD10 is its firmness, which serves
well as a surface finish in the roof as well as the walls. It was applied in a s
tanding seam roof in a way that created air chambers with convection for optimal
thermal resistance. The rolls were attached together to create a continuous vap
our barrier and thermal protection without thermal bridges. When finished, the p
roject was evaluated and temperature measurements were done. The external temper
ature taken on various spots on the metal surface was 102° F (39° C), the inside tem
perature on the surface of theAD10 was never above 82° F (28° C). This year the clie
nt was revisited and the insulation was found to be perfectly in place. The clie
nt was satisfied and there were no cases of coagulated or coloured sugar.
Prodex sales staff and engineers made an excellent analysis of the client's nee
ds, the material characteristics of AD10 were used to its maximum and the thorou
gh evaluation of the project showed that even in a gigantic storage, Prodex prod
uct AD10 managed to tame the extreme outdoor climate to a satisfying internal cl
imate. Additionally, it avoided the use of energy to control the environment.
Prodex Total scores way above alternatives like fiberglass insulation and bubble
insulation. Let’s take a fibreglass insulator for instance. Unlike the former, Pr
odex contains no itchy fibers which cause breathing problems or skin irritation.
Thus, you can easily use it sans any safety gear. Also, it is unaffected by hum
idity and it doesn t mildew or promote fungal growth.
Prodex is also convenient to use unlike fibreglass batts which are particularly
unpleasant to hang in overhead ceilings and under floors as they require straps
or wire mesh across the joists to hold them up.
Also, it can endure humid conditions, thus making it an effective option for dam
p basements.
Additionally, it can also be used in metal buildings, steel buildings or pole ba
rns. Steel-skinned buildings require an insulation that addresses the problems o
f condensation, radiant Heat and cold. Adding traditional fiberglass batt insula
tion to slow the loss of heat from a steel building creates a problem. Moisture
trapped within the insulation will cause its R-value and effectiveness to drop d
ramatically as water is a very good conductor of heat. Even though the metal in
a quality steel building will be treated, water trapped between the insulation a
nd the building exterior will, over time, cause rust, oxidation, mold and fungal
growth - conditions that will degrade the steel walls and shorten the service l
ife of the building. Condensation can also result in ruined crops or bacterial g
rowth.
A vapour retarder installed on the warm side of the insulation will act as a phy
sical shield against moisture, keeping it inside in the form of water vapour. A
vapour retarder like aluminium foil will slow the vapour movement. Infiltration
of air through the building’s exterior in humid areas will also allow some moistur
e to enter below the roof decking and into the insulation. As any amount of mois
ture seriously degrades the insulation capabilities of fiberglass batt insulatio
n, fiberglass is not recommended for use in steel buildings in humid areas. Inst
ead, Prodex Total Insulation is recommended as it insulates, eliminates condensa
tion, cools the building in summer and creates a vapour barrier that protects th
e building.
Fiberglass insulation also has potential health risks such as lung damage. Healt
h and safety issues for installers are a major disadvantage. Issues include pote
ntial cancer risk from exposure to glass fibers (based on animal studies) and fo
rmaldehyde off-gassing from the resin used in the backing and petrochemicals in
the resin. Green building practitioners shun fiberglass insulation altogether.
Direct contact with fiberglass and exposure to airborne fiberglass dust can irri
tate the skin, eyes, nose and throat.
Batts do not seal wall and ceiling cavities tightly and need an additional vapou
r barrier to protect it from moisture.
Also, it can settle, resulting in a decline in effectiveness. Compressing the in
sulation too reduces its effectiveness.
Fiberglass insulation does not adequately control air infiltration. Cutting the
batts to accommodate electrical boxes, ducts, wiring, plumbing and chimneys crea
tes a free air path through the wall cavity or attic floor. Rigid or reflective
insulation attached over the studs instead of between them provides a tighter ai
r barrier. Sprayed foam insulation also seals and insulates by creating a barrie
r against air infiltration.
A yet another serious disadvantage of fiberglass is its lowest R-value per inch
among all the insulations available in the market. The average resistance of fib
erglass to convective air flow is R-3 per inch. R19 fiberglass insulation will n
ot perform at this value once pinched into place or introduced to moisture.
Prodex also scores above double bubble insulation, as it doesn t lose its R valu
e over time. It seals once fastened, screwed or stapled. The polyethylene micro-
bubbles do not collapse with temperature changes.
The biggest difference between Prodex and bubble wrap is long-term performance.
Under pressure, the air in bubble insulation escapes while the Prodex micro-cell
s maintain the same. Prodex has a high quality core which maintains its shape wh
en exposed to forces.
Prodex meets the unique requirements of metal buildings and pole barns: it elimi
nates condensation, prevents radiant heat transfer (primary source of heat-flow)
and its R-Value is unaffected by humidity.
Prodex Total Insulation auto seals once it is fastened, screwed or stapled. This
prevents leakage when a roof is nailed to a structure.
Prodex dampens sounds when applied between two rigid elements. When applied in r
oofing applications this reduces the sound of rain fall.
Prodex combines elasticity and rigidness. It has a high yield point, which means
it’s considered elastic -- it can be stretched during installation. That also add
s the benefit of a clean look once installed.
