n many countries, such as Burundi and Guinea, elections may either consolidate peace
or mark a return to violence. In 2010, these two African countries held important
presidential elections. Development and Peace partners helped to ensure that these
elections were conducted in a transparent and peaceful manner.
In Burundi, the Kamenge Youth Centre
organized workshops for young people who
would be voting for the first time. The Episcopal
Justice and Peace Commission and the Civil
Society Coalition for the Monitoring of Elections
(COSOME) played a central role in observing
elections across the country.
In Guinea, Religious Leaders of Guinea,
Together for Peace, an interfaith project financially
supported by Development and Peace,
allowed the first democratically-elected president
to take office without having to confront a new—
and dreaded—civil war.

“This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased;
listen to him!” Matthew 17.5

On Struggle
We will struggle on,
No matter how long it takes
Or what it costs, until
We establish a just
Community of free men and
Women in our land,
Deciding together,
Working and striving
Together but also
Singing, dancing, laughing and loving together.

ur world thirsts for justice. In Mexico, injustice often affects the poorest. That was
the case for Jacinta, Teresa and Alberta, three women unjustly imprisoned for
allegedly having kidnapped policemen.
The Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez Human Rights Centre defended the three women
and proved that their
fundamental human
rights had been violated.
Now free, these three
women can no longer
remain indifferent to the
injustices suffered by too
many Mexicans.

“Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty.”
John 4.15

Fill our hearts

Loving Creator, you have made us in your image
and we yearn for the healing of all your people.
Fill our hearts with the fire of your love
and our minds with a thirst for justice.
Embolden us to cry out against oppression,
empower us to ensure clean water for all Creation,
and enrich us with your presence in water
so that all Creation may feel your touch and be healed.
We ask this in the name of our crucified,
risen Lord, our liberator and redeemer, Jesus Christ.

o live in peace is the goal of all people, and building peace is an integral part of the
mission of Development and Peace. Bishop Richard Grecco of Charlottetown
shared his reflections after a trip to the Middle East with Development and Peace:

“The Middle East is the place above all

where peace needs to be celebrated, because
it is the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity and
the centre of the Muslim faith. Peace in the Middle
East would have a global impact.”

“As I offered Eucharist in the Church

of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the force
of the Prayer for Peace and the Sign of Peace before
Holy Communion struck me deeply
and emotionally. Development and Peace
is about peace-building as much as it
is about development, especially in the
Middle East.”

Prayers of the People

God of Compassion, in Colombia, in Palestine and Israel,
in Afghanistan,
in all the regions of the world where your people suffer
from the violence of war and the violence of oppression,
open the way forward to hope, to healing,
to a just and lasting peace.
God of Peace, we pray for courageous and committed people
around the world who every day take steps, small and large,
along the path to peace.
May we too be faithful travellers
as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus
who came to be our Peace.

Solidarity Sunday
April 10, 2011 Building a World of Justice

T
Partners on the Road to Freedom
hroughout the dark days of the 24-year
Indonesian occupation of Timor-Leste,
the Catholic Church was an important
defender of the Timorese people’s
human rights. Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo, with
the help of Development and Peace, the
Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and
other Catholic agencies worldwide, brought the
world’s attention to the human rights abuses
the Timorese people were suffering. In 1999,
Indonesia withdrew from the country. In 2002,
Timor-Leste became a nation.
Development and Peace has worked in
solidarity with the Timorese Church’s agencies
such as the Justice and Peace Commission and Radio
Kmanek since the early 1990s. In recent years we
have also accompanied women’s organizations as
they work on issues that primarily affect women
and children, including domestic violence. All
of our Timorese partners are journeying on the
long road to building what Bishop Belo calls
‘compassionate democracy’.

“I am the resurrection and the life,” John 11.25

“We, the predominantly Christian people of East

Timor, like to think of the road we have taken to
freedom as the road that Jesus Christ took toward
Easter – toward the Resurrection. It is a Way of the
Cross, a Paschal experience in its deepest sense: life
through death, consolation through desolation,
freedom through oppression, justice through impunity,
victory through defeat, hope through despair. ...We
have suffered enormous losses on our road to freedom.
We must commit ourselves to truth and reconciliation,
to justice and peace. We must travel with hope,
looking behind the horizon–to a compassionate
democracy. It is our road to Easter–to Resurrection.” Bishop Ricardo da Silva of Dili presents
