A Message from the Manager 3
Welcome to our 2011 Spring/Summer Recreation Guide. Time sure does fly by when you are having fun! On June 1st, the

S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2 0 11
City will celebrate its 20th Birthday. When the City was incorporated on July 1, 1991, the Parks and Recreation Department
didn’t own any facilities in which to hold recreation classes. All classes were held in schools. Now, we have three facilities with
more needed. In 1991, the population was approximately 19,000 and it is now currently over 101,000. We had eight parks in
the City and now we have 50. We offered one special event, which was the Egg Hunt and now we have 20+ special events
throughout the year. I have seen a lot of good changes in the past 20 years!!
We completed two neighborhood parks this year – Grizzly Ridge Park and Calle Estancia Park. California Oaks Park and
Firefighter’s Park had new playground equipment installed with shade covers. Each park has two sets of play equipment for
different age groups. In addition, we opened the Murrieta Equestrian Park on Juniper Street and Hayes Avenue. We are also in
the process of doing the master plan design for the 37 acres of Phase 2 of Los Alamos Hills Sports Park. Torrey Pines Park will
be built in the coming year and it will include our first dog park.
With the wet winter we had, the native flowers will be in bloom. This is a good time to get that exercise you want and enjoy
the scenery at the same time! Take a walk or bike ride on our nature trails, or just enjoy the outdoors at
a neighborhood park. There is a lot to do in the City and a lot of trails and parks to explore. Visit a new
park and see other parts of the City. You might find something you really like!
The Community Service Department continues to offer you a wide variety of recreation classes and
programs for all ages. Please take the time to look through this brochure and see all that we have to
offer. You won’t be disappointed!! Remember to join us for the City’s 20th Birthday Bash at California
Oaks Sports Park on June 25th. It is a wonderful family experience; don’t forget to invite your friends
to join you.

Alternative Recreation Program
Autism Society
The Autism Society Inland Empire teen and young adult social
meets twice a month. The second Saturday we meet at the
Murrieta Community center for game days, parties and educational
events such as how to make friends. The second event of the
month is a community outing to things like pool parties, picnics,
bowling or baseball games. For upcoming events you can contact

The mission of the Autism Society Inland Empire Chapter is to
improve the lives of all affected by autism. We do this by increasing
public awareness about the day-to-day issues faced by people on
the spectrum, advocating for appropriate services for individuals
across the lifespan, and providing the latest information regarding
treatment, education, research, support and advocacy. For

ARP 18 years and older
The City of Murrieta 's Alternative Recreation Program offers
recreational opportunities for our special needs adults, ages 18 years
and older. Our goal for this program is to offer services and activities
to facilitate their growth as members of the city and as individuals. We
will be offering group activities and events, such as dances, movie
nights, and games. The program will be held at the Community Center
or the Senior Center on the listed dates below. There will be a $2
charge for each participant (guardians and caregivers are free of

Animal Interaction
Dog Training
Good Dog! This is dog training using
positive reinforcement techniques. All
family members are encouraged to
attend so everyone can be consistent
with the dog at home. Classes are for
dogs that are not aggressive towards people or other dogs. If you're
unsure about your dog's socialization, please set up an evaluation with
the instructor. You may contact Andi Albright at (951) 219-3200.
Required supplies include: vaccination records, dog treats, 4 ft. leash,
dog collar, and bags for pet waste.

Freshman Training
The freshman level class is for dogs 6 months and older. During the 6
week session, we will cover socialization, potty training, destructive
behavior, no jumping, not to pull on the leash, how to sit, stay, lie down,
drop it, leave it, watch me and more. Dogs of all ages are encouraged

Sophomore Training
*Pre-requisite: Puppy or Freshman level classes. The sophomore level
class is a continuation of freshman or puppy level classes and
participants must know the commands and the behaviors taught in
these classes. Sophomore class builds on the behaviors learned in the
previous classes as well as learning new behaviors such as wait (at the
door), heel, park it, and more. The goal of this class is to refine their
skills and create a very well behaved dog in public and at home.

Horse Crazy Tiny Tots 2 to 4 years
Is your 2 or 3 year old horse crazy? This class is the
perfect way to get their horsy fix. We start every class
by giving our wonderful horses carrots. Then, we warm
up and stretch our muscles with music. Next the tots CIT Y OF MURRIE TA RECRE AT ION GUIDE
will learn a few moves on our barrels (fake horses) that
they will be doing on a real horse. Then it is horse time,
where we will be working on a rider seat and other fun
moves on our specially trained horse. Last, we will do a little brushing
with our cute pony Zack. This class is 30 minutes long and is
customized for two and three year olds. Tots will gain balance, body
awareness, coordination, and self-confidence. Parent involvement is
required.

Parent & Me Horseback Riding 4 to 8 years
Kids ages 4-8 and their moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, and uncles.
With our Parent and Me Horseback Riding Lessons you are able to take
an active role in your child's riding experience and education. In the 1st
class the parents will learn how to be an instructor's assistant (This
class may go over the allotted time.) Assistants will learn how your
child should groom, saddle, mount/dismount, proper riding and safety.
We will also pass out our Horsemanship/Equine Science Jr. study
book, work sheets and sign liability releases. Starting the 2nd class the
kids will be riding, and will learn how to groom, saddle, mount and
properly ride with their parents, under the supervision of a certified
instructor. The last class the kids will have a show, and family will be
welcome to come watch and take pictures of the kids riding and
winning ribbons. Parents will not be riding, their role will be helping
their children to halter, groom, and saddle the horses.

The Family Cooking Project 6 years and older
This unique and new Family Cooking class is not only a great way for
parents and kids to spend time together, it's also a rich educational
experience teaching concepts essential for math and reading, and lets
kids practice their motor skills. Children will be more open to tasting
new foods when they help prepare them. Together as a team parents
and kids will make easy and tasty dishes. What a good start to
gathering around the dinner table more often, this class will give you
confidence. Nutrition information is shared during the class. Natural,
locally grown ingredients are used. Please advise if any food allergies.

ZUMBA is a Latin inspired dance fitness class that incorporates Latin

Sunshine Generation 3 to 11 years
Sunshine Generation is a national children's performing group divided
by age groups into Singing Sunbeams, Sundance Kids, Solar Sounds,
and Sound Station is our teen group. The goal of Sunshine Generation
is to build self confidence through music appreciation. Curriculum
includes singing, vocal training, music theory, dance, and showmanship.
Throughout the year, participants learn shows and perform for the
community. Performances are optional. Participants must be enrolled
for at least 2 sessions to be eligible to perform and costumes are

Gymnastics
Spring registration for Intro through Level V Gymnastics and Hip Hop
Tumblers will be Monday, April 18, 2011. Summer registration will be
Monday, July 11, 2011. Registration starts at 8:00 am and can be done
either on-line or at the Murrieta Community Center (41810 Juniper
Street). Registration for Levels I through V is for gymnasts who have
successfully passed the previous level or have instructor approval.
Previous enrollment does not guarantee a spot in the new session.
Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. There will be a $5
insurance fee payable to MVG on the first day of class. This is a
onetime fee per session! If you are in multiple classes this fee covers
all classes except for MVG Competition.
Gymnastics Intro/Level I
A beginning gymnastics program that "recognizes the
athlete in a child, BEFORE they make the team". This
course introduces concepts of the balance beam, bar,
vault, and floor exercises. Gymnasts will improve their
strength, flexibility, agility, and self-confidence. Each
session concludes with an awards ceremony where
students are rewarded for setting and accomplishing
goals. Level I gymnasts must pass Intro first and are

Guzman Championship Tennis "Hot Shots" 5 to 14 years
Beginner Tennis is a class designed for children 6 years and older with
little or no tennis experience. We will focus on learning the forehand,
backhand, forehand volley, backhand volley, overhead and serve. These
will be taught with attention to proper technique using great drills and fun
games. The children will learn the tennis footwork and work their bodies
with some fitness drills. They will leave sweaty, but always with a smile!!
Intermediate Tennis is a class designed for children 6 years and older
with beginning tennis experience. All of the basic tennis strokes will
continue to be worked on with strict attention to technique, and teaching
new aspects of the game like grip changes, different spins, quick footwork
and agility drills. This class will begin to bring the children to the next level
as they learn to play points, keep score and play matches. They will love

Little Critters 3 to 5 years
Little Critters is a progressive program for children ages 3-5. All
classes focus on building children's self-esteem, attention spans and
social development through games, music, crafts, and supervised
group play. Little Critters provides a safe and fun environment for
children to try new activities and interact with other kids their own age.
Participants must be potty trained. Registration typically begins on the
15th of the month prior to the start of the new session. Non-resident
registration will be the next day. No one will be permitted to register for
both a M/W/F and T/TH class in the same month.

All Good Drivers Internet Driving Course 14 to 18 years
Driver Education is a California required course for teens to receive a
driver's license. It is the first step that must be taken so teens can
receive a driver's license. The course includes parent involvement and
is fun, interactive, and educational. Coursework can be completed at
any time of day or night. DMV accepted completion certificates are
issued upon successful completion of the course. This class does not
include behind the wheel driving. Simply register with the Community
Services Department and your login and password will be e-mailed to
you. Upon receiving the e-mail you can begin the course and you will
be driving safely in no time. Register anytime, this class is an
independent study to be completed at your own pace.

Youth Advisory Committee
The City of Murrieta Community Services Department is currently
looking for responsible middle school and high school students to
participate in the Youth Advisory Committee (Y.A.C.) for the 2011/2012
school year. Purpose: To involve middle and high school students in
planning, creating, and implementing a variety of teen activities and
volunteer events designed for their peers. The benefits of being a
Y.A.C. member are numerous: · Free admission to all teen events · A
sense of accomplishment by participating in community service · A
better understanding of local government · Community recognition that
can be used for high school and/ or college applications. All members
are required to attend one meeting per month and commit to
volunteering twenty hours of community service. Example of duties
may include but are not limited to, assisting of planning with teen
dances, excursions, volunteer opportunities, and other City-wide teen

the course as well. It is best to have your own machine, but machines

WATER CONSERVATION:
The City continues to implement water conservation measures
throughout the city. More drought tolerant plant material continues to
be planted in various areas throughout the City of Murrieta as well as
drip irrigation systems. 98% of the irrigation controllers that the City
utilizes to irrigate its parks, slopes, medians, and streetscapes are

Murrieta Senior Center offers numerous programs to active seniors who do not require special care or adult supervision. Active senior
citizens age 50 or better are welcome. There is no membership fee. Fees apply to some classes and excursions. Come for classes,
conversation, cards, billiards, shuffleboard, embroidery, computer lab, lunch, and much more. Regular operating hours are Monday
through Friday 8am to 4pm. The center is closed on holidays. For more information call (951) 304-7275

Lunch program Devine Sewers of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood

The Murrieta Senior Center‘s lunch program is a great way to get to
know your fellow neighbors while having a great nutritious meal.
Lunch is provided Monday through Friday at 11:30am. A $3.00
donation is requested for persons 60 years and older. Reservations
must be made 24 hours in advance by calling (951) 461-6123.
Billiard Social
The center has two regulation size pool tables that are open for
playing during regular hours. We currently have a billiard workshop
for beginners on Monday’s from 8-10am. Our billiard social is on the
first Wednesday of each month from 12:30-2:30pm. Prizes are
awarded to the winners.
Ladies Windsong Harmony
Women who like to sing come on out. Sing and perform with others
who share your love of music! Old time barbershop harmonies and
modern music too. Class is every Tuesday from 12-2:00pm.

Blood pressure checks - come and get your blood pressure read on
Monday’s from 9:30-11:30 and the first and third Wednesday from 9
-10:30am.
Veterans Benefits – a councilor will be on hand to help with
paperwork and answer questions. No appointment necessary, meets
on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 8am to
12noon.
Legal Aide- Anita Milner, a volunteer lawyer is available to help answer
questions and assist with legal advice. She meets on the first and third
Thursday of each month. You must call the last Thursday of the month
to make your appointment.
Notary service – Free to seniors. Norma Serna volunteers her time to
Notarize documents. You must call for an appointment. She is available
on the first Tuesday of every month.
Bereavement group – Hospice of the Valley has an 8 week
bereavement group that meets at the center. Please call (951) 672-
1666 to find out dates and times.
Alzheimer’s group – This group offers you the opportunity to share
your stories, connect with others in similar situations, and get help with
problem solving. The group meets on the second Monday from
10-11:30am.
Parkinson group - Learn how to manage living with Parkinson’s from
other persons affect by the disease, including caregivers and family
members. Group meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month from
1-3pm.

The class is lead by one of our certified water exercise instructors

Classes begin May 4th and stretch through September 24th. Class
costs are $3 per class for residents or $5 per class for non residents.
Monthly passes are available for $25 for residents or $45 for non
residents. Using the resistance of water, the benefits include
cardiovascular endurance, muscle toning, and flexibility. Water Exercise
is refreshing and rewarding for all fitness levels and you don’t need to
