Chapter 1
1. Testing Setup
Overview
The following steps describe the general procedures for performing network analysis testing using
the MetroNet 5000. Be sure that you are familiar with the icons, their meanings, and their
positions on the test procedure screens.

Your test settings are automatically saved in non-volatile

memory. When you reboot, these settings will re-populate your
test settings screen instead of the default settings

Select the Ethernet and IP icon from the Home screen. The Test Mode screen will appear as
shown below. The appearance of the Test Mode screen varies based on the MetroNet Model
(available ports) and installed testing options.

Understanding Profiles
The MetroNet 5000 logs all of your test settings and saves them. You can view these settings
each time you navigate to a particular test settings screen. Your saved settings will appear on
each settings screen instead of the initial default settings.
From the Test Mode screen, select the Profile button,
the profile viewer will be displayed as shown to the
right.
To save the current configuration data, enter the
desired file name and then select the Save button.
To load a profile which was saved previously or the
default profile (default.cfg), highlight the desired
profile and then select the Load button.
To delete profile, highlight the desired profile and then
select the Delete button.

You cannot delete the default profile (default.cfg).

Link Setup
Before performing any tests or measurements, you will
first need to complete the Link Setup.
If you have selected a test mode and have not
previously performed a Link Setup, the Link Setup
screen will automatically be displayed.
From this screen, adjust the link settings based on port
selection as shown in the following sub-sections.
To return to the Link Setup screen from any

select the Link Setup option.

Do not enable laser connections when there is no fiber attached

to the optical output connector because this device will emit
invisible laser radiation if the unit is powered on and the laser is
enabled without laser connections.

Under no circumstances look into the end of an optical cable

attached to the optical output when the device is operating. This
device’s laser radiation can seriously damage your eyesight.

SFP Transceiver and RJ-45 Port Link Setup
Only one interface can be selected and used for each 1G port, either SFP (optical) or RJ-45
(copper). When an SFP transceiver and RJ-45 port
is selected on the Test Mode screen, the following
settings can be adjusted:
Medium - Use this to setting to select from
Copper, Optic 1G, or 100M Optics interface
types.
Laser On - Use this setting to turn the laser On
or Off. This setting will appear grayed out if an
optical transceiver is not installed or Medium is
set to Copper.
Auto Negotiation - If this option is selected you
can adjust the following settings:
Local - Use this to set line rates of Half and/
or Full. The available line rates are
determined by the Medium selection. Line
rates that are not available will be grayed
out.

Loopback Control
In addition to the local loopback capability, the MetroNet 5000 allows you to perform loopback
tests against multiple MetroNet 5000 units located remotely. The MetroNet 5000 offers the
capability to be either a loopback controller (server) or a remote loopback device (client)
depending on its usage.

Setup for Remote Loopback Controller (Server)

The following procedure describes how to perform a Remote Loopback test as the loopback
controller (server) with a second MetroNet 5000 unit connected at a distance acting as a
remote loopback device (client).
To use the loopback controller you must select the Throughput, RFC2544, Packet
Flooding, or Throughput 32 test mode and perform the initial setup steps as described in
their respective Chapters.
Once all necessary setup items have been completed, from the Menu button, select the
Loopback Control option to enter the Loopback Control screen as shown below.
The Loopback Control screen includes the
following Loopback test configuration settings:
• IP Setup
• Control
• Filter

Setup for Remote Loopback Device (Client)
The following procedure describes how to setup a Remote Loopback test as the remote
loopback device (client) with a second MetroNet 5000 unit connected at a distance acting as
loopback controller (server).
To use the Remote Loopback Device (client) you must select the Loopback test mode and
perform the initial setup steps as described in its respective Chapter.
Once all necessary setup items have been completed, from the Menu button, select the
Loopback option to enter the Loopback screen as shown below.
Perform the following steps to configure the device for remote loopback control:
1. Select the Remote option from the Controlled By
dropdown menu.

device. If you do not have a gateway connected in
your network, enter all zeros to indicate that you will
be communicating directly with a remote MetroNet
5000.

When the Loopback Controller (server) invokes the Loop Up

command, the display of the Remote Loopback Device (client)
displays the Measurement screen on its display while in the
Loopback test mode. This does not occur when you are in the
midst of performing non-loopback tests.

Performing Measurements
The MetroNet 5000 allows you to view a variety of network parameters and
their performance statistics. The IP Tools measurement mode performs
either a Ping or Trace Route test.
The Ping test enables you to check whether communications can be
established with a particular remote node. The MetroNet 5000 “pings” a
remote node by sending it an echo request message. If the remote device is
active and reachable, it will respond.
The Trace Route test enables you to determine the path through the network
to a particular device. The MetroNet 5000 tester sends data packets over
the network and returns the router IDs on the selected path and specifies the
time it took for each hop.
Once all necessary setup items have been completed; from the Menu button
select the Measurement option to enter either the Ping or the Trace Route
Measurement screen as shown below.

3-108
Performing Measurements
The MetroNet 5000 allows you to view a variety of network
parameters and their performance statistics. The L1/
Unframed BERT (Bit Error Rate Test) is a cable integrity test
that can be done with one or two ports. This test typically
consists of a test pattern generator and a receiver that can be
set to the same pattern.
This L1/Unframed BERT test can be implemented singularly
with one Layer 1 device at either end of a transmission link
and a loopback at the remote end. To test in pairs, the same
test is performed over two ports instead of one. A PRBS
pattern is generated by your MetroNet 5000 transmission port.
That pattern is checked for errors at the receiving (Rx) port.
The MetroNet 5000 supports L1 and Unframed BERT for both
1 Gigabit and 10 Gigabit.
Once all necessary setup items have been completed; from
the Menu button, select the Measurement option to enter the
Measurement screen as shown below.
In the Measurement screen, select the Run button or press Usage Tab
the RUN/STOP button on the physical keypad to start your
measurement.
Anytime you want to stop the measurement in progress,
simply select the Stop button.
