Owd Towser Exhibition & Artists’ Film Programme 2011

Call for Proposals


For Holmfirth Arts Festival 2011, guest curators Alice Bradshaw & Vannesa Haley
invite proposals for site-responsive work for a group exhibition in and around the
heritage site of Owd Towser in central Holmfirth.

The lower floor of the Owd Towser is the old village mortuary, ambulance station and
fire station. The upper floor of is the old church lock up, comprising a cell and watch
room. The surrounding area is the steep, cobbled Daisy Lane with an adjacent flat
paved area. Please see the Owd Towser information document for further information
about the site.

Artists are invited to send proposals (3 maximum) for new or existing work of any
medium, with allocation of the lower floor to the film screening programme.

This open call for proposals is comprised of 2 parts:


1. Owd Towser Exhibition Call for Proposals
2. Owd Towser Artists’ Film Programme Call & Application Form

There is no submission fee.


Artists can submit proposals to both parts of the programme.
Proposals from collectives and groups are also accepted.
Participating artists will also be invited to give a public talk as part of the festival
programme.

Selection will take place shortly after the deadline and successful and unsuccessful
artists notified.

About Holmfirth Arts Festival:

Holmfirth Arts Festival is a mixed art form commissioning festival established in 2008.
Taking place annually in the picturesque town of Holmfirth and throughout the Holme
Valley, the festival's programme embraces theatre, visual art, literature, and music.
Holmfirth Arts Festival celebrates the landscapes and communities of the Holme
Valley and Yorkshire and fosters the distinct cultural traditions which thrive here, such
as brass bands and choral singing. Making new work is fundamental to the festival;
each year's programme is built around a series of new works across all art forms,
including works by young and emerging artists and companies, local artists, and
nationally or internationally known practitioners.

1. Owd Towser Exhibition Call for


Proposals
What: Proposals for new or existing site responsive work including sculpture,
installation, sound, performance, drawings, painting and print. NB for film/video work
see Artists’ Film Programme below.
When: 11th – 26th June 2011
Where: Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, UK
Who: All
Charges: No charges
Fees: £50 stipend available to help towards production costs including
equipment/materials, travel/postage and insurance.
Details: The upper floor of the Owd Towser is the old church lock up, comprising a cell
and watch room. There is limited natural light with power and artificial light available.
The surrounding area is the steep, cobbled Daisy lane with an adjacent flat paved
area.

2. Owd Towser Artists’ Film Programme Call


What: Proposals for new or existing artists’ screen based work responding to the
history-rich and unusual screening venue the Owd Towser or responding to the broad
theme of rivers/water. Maximum duration 15 minutes.
When: 11th – 26th June 2011
Where: Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, UK
Who: All
Charges: No charges
Fees: No fees
Details: The ground floor of Owd Towser is the old village fire station and mortuary.
Selected films will be projected in this space during Holmfirth Arts Festival 2011.
Artists can submit up to 3 films/proposals each.
