connected to it.

let them discuss in groups about their holidays this year and the places where they had
stayed. Select three of four students to report back to them class on what they found out
from their friends.

Before reading the text, tell the students to read the questions. Give them 3min. to skim
read the text. Check the answers with the class; any elicit new vocabulary and unknown
words. Clarify if necessary. Tell the students to read the questions in the task 4, and then
give the students 5min to read the text again. Students answer the questions on their own.
After they complete the task 4 they should complete task 5, on their own. Elicit the
answers to both tasks from the class and remind the students to use full sentences.

Vocabulary: 10 min
Write the words compound nouns on the board, elicit the explanation form the students –
words made up of two nouns, could be written as one or two words e.g. backpack or
youth hostel. Give them 5 min to underline the examples in the text, and then ask them to
complete the tasks 6, 7 and 8 in the student’s book. Check the answers with the class. Ask
the students if you should write the answers on the board. If anyone finishes first give
him/her additional exercise you printed from the site www.esltower.com.

Speaking: 15 min
While they are completing the tasks in the student’s book, walk around the class and
monitor the activity and distribute the maps to the students. Tell them it is for later when
they finish the present activity. Divide the students in pairs (use the current sitting

not show each other their maps. They must ask for and give directions to their partner e.g.
How can I get to the tourist information office? Cross the Bridge Street and turn right.
The tourist information office is on the right.
Tell them to label the buildings on their map when they find out what they are. Walk,
monitor the conversations and make sure they are using the structures correctly, help if it
is needed. Before they start ask them if they need any help with the vocabulary
concerning giving instructions (down/up the street, across the river, cross the bridge).
Make sure you elicit this vocabulary from them before they start. If they complete the
task early use Talk about it. Refer them back to the student’s book and ask them to read
the questions. Divide them in groups to answer the questions and discuss the answers.
The groups share their ideas with the class.
