Two scales that are used to classify particle sizes are the US Sieve Series and Tyler Equivalent, sometimes called Tyler
Mesh Size or Tyler Standard Sieve Series. The most common mesh opening sizes for these scales are given in the table
above and provide an indication of gold particle size. The mesh screen is commonly used to classify the size-differences
of gold. "Mesh" defines the number of openings contained along a lineal inch of screen. For example, a screen labeled
"10-mesh" would contain 10 openings per lineal inch, 10 openings vertically and 10 openings horizontally (10x10=100)
equaling 100 openings per square inch. "Twenty-mesh" would have 20 openings per lineal inch, 20 openings vertically
and 20 openings horizontally (20x20=400), or 400 openings per square inch, and so on.
While there is a “standardized” way of classifying gold and determining how many pieces there are per gram or troy
ounce the number will vary due to the natural nature of gold. Gold comes in many shapes, compositions, and sizes,
which create variables. In addition, the size of wires used in screens comes in standard diameters but can vary due to
wear and distortion. This changes the size of the openings.

A nugget is “sized” according to its ability to pass through the openings of the various meshes. You will frequently find
gold sized between two mesh sizes such as in the 10-20 mesh range. For example, a #8 size nugget is able to fall
through #4 and #6 meshes but not the #8 mesh. It could also be described as being larger than 1/8 inch and smaller
than 1/6 inch.
