PATROL UPDATE CLASS WEBSITE: IMPORTANT DATES:

The Orange team has taken over patrol
duties this week. The last day of duty for
the Orange team will be Monday, March
21. This is the day after Spring Break.
Another reward trip for patrols will be
coming up in the spring.
Keep up the great work patrols!

WHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
In math this week, we reviewed and
practiced two different strategies for long
division problems. We also learned three
different ways to represent the remainder.
Next week, we will do a short review on data
and spend some time in the computer lab
practicing for the MCA tests this spring.
We also continued with our science
unit, titled “Variables”. With this three week
focus, we hope to give our students some
important, fundamental science knowledge
that they will build on in middle school and
beyond. This week our class conducted
experiments with Life Boats. Ask your child to
share the results of our controlled experiment
and how they can predict the number of
passengers a boat can hold. We will finish up
the science unit next week with one final
investigation on Flippers.
We also continued meeting with our
book clubs this week. Students are reading a
novel from the fantasy genre. Because of the
short week, there was no spelling list this
week. Next week, we will continue with
spelling and finish our fantasy book club.
We also learned about the Native
American culture with our first grade buddies.
We attended an assembly and participated in
an activity for this special multicultural day.

ROOM 114 – CLASS NEWS
READ-A-THON
The MIPTO is currently conducting a "Love
to read-a-thon" which began on February
14th. Students have the chance to win
prizes if they fill out and turn in their read-
a-thon calendar each week. The read-a-
thon ends on Monday, March 7. Please
make sure that calendars are completed,
signed, and returned to school on Monday,
March 7.

HOMEWORK UPDATE
Fifth graders will no longer be receiving the

homework packet every Friday. Homework
will be given out in classrooms as teachers
feel it is needed. We will be reminding
students to keep track of their homework in
their agendas. This change will help ease
them into the homework patterns they are
likely to see in middle school. Students will
have to continue to read at home and will
be required to fill out a monthly reading
log. Math homework will also continue on a
regular basis.
