Let us begin again
(2010)

C Prints
30”x 50”

The lover always feels suspense; and

the fear of the clash of that ideal
state becomes an expected future.
Although suspense is acknowledged
and “Let us begin again” represents
that emotional turbulence, it holds
on to that ideal state in love in which
the lover is lighter and flexible, so
free of worldliness, ambitions, ad-
vancements, alliances roles and pow-
ers. The title refers Roland Barthes’
influential book “A Lovers Discourse”,
where Barthes depicts the experience
as a painful pleasure in which the
lover always desires to return to the
ideal primal stage.
Hunting
(2010)

C Prints
12”x 16”

The project, “Hunting”, consists of

ten portraits shot at Knightsbridge
which can be considered as the posh
regions of London. The subjects are
chosen according to photographer’s
preferences and shot instinctively.
Hiding and chasing the desired sub-
jects was a part of the process
and that is where the title comes
from. Although the photos may not
reflect a particular taste in men,
the project questions the process of
choosing the love object. The action
of taking photographs creates space
for contemplation where the
photographer questions her own
relationship with men.
The Coffee House
(2010)
C Prints
20”x 30”

The “kahve” or “kahvehane”, is the

fundamental gathering place for
men in Turkish society and has a very
old historical background. Through
out the history, and yet still the
coffeehouse has been a place for
men only, and as a forbidden space
it triggers my desire to invade and
record the gaze which was foreseen.
The camera records that uneasiness
and discomfort of me as a woman
through the gaze I experienced,
while it also dominates my subjects
with my unexpected presence.
Reminders
(2009)

C Prints
7”x 7”

In order to forget/remember
one needs something tangible to
contemplate. That idol can give
meaning to the past, wherea it
can eliminate all meanings.
Camera is not only a tool to
record but it is a wand, which a
magician practices on.
And photographs can be
reminders of those who
are gone. “Reminders” are the
traces of friends whom are
missed and ignored,
these are idols of those
I love and hate.
The Room
(2009)

Doppelganger Project
‘The Room’
by Balthus

What attracts me in Balthus paint-

ings is their voyeuristic and exhi-
bitionist character, which has some-
thing to do with photography’s
nature. Most of his works consist
girls in puberty depicted in an erotic
and inviting way. “Le Chambre “
is one of his most powerful work
which is a playful and furtive scene
including three; which can be
called; alliances:the girl lying on the
sofa, the weird looking girl showing
off the hidden game and the cat
in dark who is the witness of the
story that has been played willingly
by those bold girls. This project
was a challenge for me in which I
asked a Turkish girl to pose naked
which was also a challenge for the
model since it was her first time
being naked in front of the camera.
I wanted to push the boundaries of
woman’s nudity which is a taboo in
my culture. As the painting is sort of
a secret play between two girls my
figure in the mirror is an evidence
of my presence and involvement of
“being there”.

to enjoy solitude. The subject
plays mundane rituals to celebrate
the spring. while she brings
natural elements from outside
world.
