3D MOVIE

Introduction:

Be it the wonderful magic by a great magician, the truth is that it is not real. But one thing that
makes it credible is our Eyes. Right from days of introduction of motion pictures by Edison to
the present day Digital 3D movie, our eyes make it real (perceived to be real). It is wonderful to
note that motion pictures (Movies) are sets individual pictures displayed one by one in same
screen very fast, like a flicker book. So to understand 3D movie a basic understanding of our
bifocal eyes or stereoscopic view is a must.

Eyes:

Below you find the construction of an eye. The pupil is the aperture (as in camera). The iris acts
as a diaphragm and the ciliary muscles adjust or make the eye lens thin and thick to focus image
clearly.

Remember we have two eyes. That is our eyes are bifocal. That is we see an object in two angles.
Two set of images is sent to our brain and our brain fuses the image and then only we could
perceive depth or judge deepness.

Understanding Bi-focal of eye:

Take a piece of sheet roll it and see through it. You would see a distant object. Now take your
hands close to it as in below picture.
What you see (Both eyes open). You see a hole in your palm. “That is how our eye perceives”
This is the basic of 3D Movie.

The below you will find the image clearly showing the Bifocal nature of eyes. You could see the
eye sees the pins in different angle. One eye gets its right image and other its left. Only then we
can judge the shape, distance and other nature of it.

3D Concept:

3D is yet another concept like motion pictures (Movies), to blind fold our eyes. In other words
3D film makes us to perceive depth by showing 2 different images in both eyes, one in
perspective to right and other to left.

The above picture is a 3D picture of Mars taken by Pathfinder. Note the two images
superimposed one in right eye perspective and other to left. (This photo is actually an Analgyph
using additive and subtractive colors to perceive 3D effect).
The above displayed is the 3D camera. Note the two lenses.

Now that, we take two pictures in two different perspectives, and record it in a single film.

Below given picture of 3D film projection will show the how simultaneously two pictures are
projected.

Now it is clear that the role of 3D glasses is to separate the two pictures projected in a single
screen into two images, in perspective (angle of view) to each eye.

That is it. When two separate images of different angles of same object is perceived by our eye,
we see the depth or 3D effect.

Technique for separation:

There are several available techniques like Anaglyph, Eclipse method, Interference technique or
the Pulfrich Effect. The recent one is of Polaroid method. Out of the recorded two images one is
horizontally polarized and other vertically polarized.

The 3D Spectacles we wear has the same Polaroid Glasses. For Example, Take the case Right
eye glass of 3D Spectacles is vertically polarized. It will block the image for left eye
(Horizontally polarized), thus getting two different images for each eye in its own perspective
and makes it real.
What to note next time you see 3D movie?

1. Always you can see 2 hazy images without 3D glasses.

2. The closer the object you see with 3D spectacles, in screen it has the farther distance
between two projected images.

3. Get your neighbor’s goggles, keep his left eye’s glass in your right eye’s glass, you will
get nil polarized or darkness. Now slightly rotate you will see light coming in.(This
because of Polaroid nature of glasses).

Future Guesses:

In my point of view, the current methods of seeing movie will exist till early 2020. After that
there may be some kind of innovation in 3D sector with improvised in 3D effect. There will be
invention to view 3D movie without 3D glass. I guess there may be some new development like
spherical screen projection similar in shape like a contact lens, by using that you will be seeing
the movie from inside it, like you are a part of movie.
