Media Statement on
The Situation in Libya
(1-2011)
25 February 2011

We, the Ambassador and members of the Libyan Embassy accredited to the Republic of South
Africa extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the
attacks against the unarmed civilian demonstrators, and having considered the tragic developments
in our beloved country, we would like to inform our people in Libya, the people of South Africa, the
people and governments of the world that we:

1. Strongly condemn all armed attacks against the unarmed Libyan civilians who are peacefully
demonstrating for their political and human rights, and call for the immediate cessation of these
repressive measures.
2. Affirm the right of the Libyan people to demonstrate peacefully for freedom and democracy, and
call upon the Libyan Armed Forces to provide the Libyan people with full protection.
3. Call on the current leadership in Libya to find a speedy and peaceful solution to the crisis in our
country and place the interests of the Libyan people and the country first to safeguard national
unity, territorial integrity, freedom and independence of our country, to evade a civil war that
could lead to the destruction and disintegration of the country
4. Emphasize that the Libyan Embassy in South Africa represents the Libyan people and will
continue to provide all services to the Libyan community in South Africa and to the Libyan and
South African peoples and whoever requires its services.
5. Express our gratitude to the people and government of South Africa and the peoples and
governments of the world for their continued support and solidarity and we hope that they will
continue to do that until the situation returns to normality.
