• The last version you upload will be the one that is marked.
• For this coursework you must submit a single Acrobat PDF document. In general, any text in the
document must not be an image (ie must not scanned) and would normally be generated from other
documents (eg MS Office 2007 using "Save As .. PDF").
• For this coursework you must also upload a single ZIP file containing supporting evidence.
• Make sure that any files you upload are virus-free and not protected by a password otherwise they
will be treated as null submissions.
• Comments on your work will be available from the Coursework page on the Intranet. The grade will
be made available in BannerWeb.
2. Coursework submitted late without an Extenuating Circumstances claim will receive a ZERO grade.
If you have extenuating circumstances you may submit your coursework up to two weeks after the
published deadline without penalty but this is subject to acceptance of your claim by the School
Extenuating Circumstances Panel. If your claim is rejected then you will receive a zero grade for
your work.
3. Coursework submitted more than two weeks late will be given feedback but a grade of non-
submission will be awarded regardless of any extenuating circumstances. However, if your
Extenuating Circumstances claim is accepted then the Extenuating Circumstances Panel will
recommend to the Progression and Award Board that you be permitted to retake a different item of
assessment at a future assessment point.
For small projects MS Project is probably too complex a tool for the average user. MS Excel has
many features that make it more suitable for this purpose. Although there is no built-in function to
produce a Gantt chart, simple Gantt charts can be produced using just a column per week and
changing the colour of cells. There are ample resources available on the Internet showing how to
do more complex Gantt charts: eg http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HA010346051033.aspx
and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CW_wGSFavTc.
You have been asked to plan the project management of the move of a large corporate website
from a static HTML version to a data-driven system based on a Web Content Management
System. A single-level Weighted Scoring Model is to be used to evaluate three options
(SharePoint, Joomla! and Drupal) using appropriate criteria.
The project plan is to be for a 9 month period and will involve meetings with the main stakeholders
and developers. Key parts will be the choice of the Content Management System and the
evaluation of MS Excel and MS Project in a Lessons Learnt document.
Part A
1. Decide on a set of appropriate business-related criteria to choose which alternative to
recommend.
2. Research the features of the alternatives.
3. Evaluate the three alternatives against your criteria.
4. Justify the criteria that were selected and the scores that were given to them.
5. Create a Weighted Scoring Model in Excel to decide on the appropriate choice of Content
Management System.
Part B
1. Identify the main tasks and milestones for the project and produce a Work Breakdown
Structure (WBS).
2. For each task identify the people involved, the weekly cost and any one-off cost, and the
task dependencies.
3. Implement the WBS and task dependencies as a Gantt chart in both MS Excel and MS
Project.
a. In MS Project the Resource Graph View should be used to display the weekly cost
and staff utilisation, and you must include comments where appropriate.
b. In MS Excel you will need to use formulae and produce charts showing the weekly
cost and staff utilisation throughout the project, and you must add comments and
incorporate cell protection and data validation of input.
Part C
1. Write a formal report describing the project plan in detail, including the Weighted Scoring
Model. Your report must incorporate output from both MS Project and MS Excel for the
Gantt chart and the resource utilisation. All images from MS Project and MS Excel must be
sized to fit appropriately on the pages.
2. Compare the use of MS Excel and MS Project for the purpose of managing small projects
in a “Lessons Learnt” Appendix to the report. This must be in your own words, and show
the lessons you have learnt.
Deliverables to be Uploaded
1. The formal project report, as detailed in Part C above, as a PDF document.
2. The Excel spreadsheets (Weighted Scoring Model and Project Plan) and Project .MPP
file (Project Plan) in a single ZIP file.
Note that your work will be marked based your PDF, so make sure that it is complete. The
spreadsheet and project management files will be tested to ensure they work as described in your
report. All material taken from other sources must be properly referenced.
