1. A rolling contact bearing is subjected to the following work cycle:

(a) radial load of 6000N at 150 r.p.m for 25% of the time;
(b) radial load of 7500N at 600 r.p.m for 20% of the time; and
(c) radial load of 2000N at 300 r.p.m for 55% of the time.

The inner ring rotates and loads are steady .Select a bearing for an expected average

2. The following data refer to a 4-stroke cylinder vertical engine.


Piston diameter=125mm
Stroke=150mm
Speed of the engine=1200r.p.m
Weight of the reciprocating parts =45N
Design stress for the material used =80N/mm2

5. (a) What is meant by creep of a belt and what is its effect?
(b) A belt,100×10mm is transmitting power at 15m/s. The angle of contact on the
driver (smaller ) pulley is 1560 . If the permissible stress for the belt material is
2N/mm2 ; determine the power that can be transmitted at this speed. Take the
density of leather as 1000kg/m3 , and coefficient of friction as 0.25. Calculate
the maximum power that can be transmitted by this belt, and the speed at
which this can be transmitted. [4+12]

6. A motor shaft rotating at 1440rpm has to transmit 15kW power to a low speed shaft
rotating at 500rpm. A 200 pressure angle involute tooth gear pinion is used. The
pinion has 25 teeth. Both gear and pinion are made of cast iron having allowable
strength of 55N/mm2 . Design a suitable gear drive. Check wear load, dynamic
load, static load. [16]

7. A screw press is to exert a force of 60kN with an applied torsional moment of


550Nm. The unsupported length of the screw is 0.45 and a thrust bearing of
hardened steel on CI is provided at the power end. The screw is to be made of steel
having an ultimate strength of 530MN/mm2 and a yield stress of 265MN/mm2 . The
design stresses are to be 87.5MN/mm2 in tension and compression 52.5MN/mm2
in shear and 14MN/mm2 in thread bearing. The nut is of CI and the permissible
shear is 21MN/mm2 . Determine the dimension of the screw and nut. [16]

1. (a) What are the dimensionless parameters used in designing hydrodynamic bear-
ing? Explain their significance.
(b) A 3 kN load is supported by a journal bearing of 75mm dia and 75mm long.
Diametral clearance 0.05 mm and bearing is lubricated by an oil of 0.0207
Pa S viscosity at operating temperature. Determine the maximum speed of
rotation of bearing when it is capable of dissipating 80 watts by heat transfer.

2. Design an overhang crankshaft with two main bearings for an I.C engine
with the Following data:
Cylinder bore = 250mm
Stroke length =300mm
Flywheel weight =27kN
Maximum pressure=2.5N/mm2
Maximum torque is at crank rotation 300 , the pressure at that instant = 1.7 N/mm2 .

3. The piston of an automobile engine is held to the connecting rod by a wrist pin
having an external diameter of 20mm and internal diameter of 11mm. The length
of the bearing in the rod end is 25mm and the bearing in each boss of the piston
is 15mm. The maximum load transmitted is 14.50kN.

(a) Determine the bearing pressure between the rod end and the wrist pin.
(b) Compare the maximum bending stress in the pin, assuming that it is a simple
beam with a uniform load.
(c) Compute the maximum deflection of the pin. [16]

4. A load P=15 kN is applied on a C-clamp as shown in the figure 4. Determine the


stresses at the points A and B. [16]

5. (a) Classify the wire ropes, based on the direction of twist.
(b) A rope drive is to transmit 250kW from a pulley of 1.2m diameter, running at
a speed of 300 rpm. The angle of lap may be taken as π radians. The groove
half angle is 22.50 . The ropes to be used are 50mm in diameter. The mass
of the rope is 1.3 kg per meter length and each rope has a maximum pull of
2.2kN, the coefficient of friction between rope and pulley is 0.3. Determine
the number of ropes required. If the overhung of the pulley is 0.5m, suggest
suitable size for the pulley shaft if it is made of steel with a shear stress of
40MPa. [6+10]
6. (a) What is the herringbone gear? Where are they used?
(b) A helical cast steel gear with 30o helix angle has to transmit 35kW at 2000
r.p.m. If the gear has 25 teeth, find the necessary module, pitch diameters
and face width for 20o full-depth involute teeth. The static stress for cast steel
may be taken as 100MPa. The face width may be taken as 3 times the normal
pitch. The tooth form factor is given by expression yI = 0.154-0.912 / TE ,
where TE represents the equivalent number of teeth. The velocity factor is
given by Cv = 6/ (6+V) where V is the peripheral speed of the gear in m/s.

7. (a) Sketch the different thread profiles.
(b) A sluice weighing 600kN is raised and lowered by means of two square threaded
screws. The coefficient of friction between the thrust collar and screw is 0.003
and that between the screw and that between the screw and nut is 0.05. Design
the screw and the nut. Assume the data if necessary. [6+10]

1. A journal bearing with a diameter of 200mm and length 150mm carries a load of
20kN, when the journal speed is 150r.p.m. The diametral clearance ratio is 0.0015.
If possible, the bearing is to operate at 350 C ambient temperature without external
cooling with a maximum oil temperature of 900 C. If external cooling is required, it
is to be as little as possible to minimize the required oil flow rate and heat exchanger
size.

(a) What type of oil do you recommend?


(b) Will the bearing operate without external cooling?
(c) If the bearing operates without external cooling, determine the operating oil
temperature?
(d) If the bearing operates with external cooling, determine the amount of oil in
kg/min required to carry away the excess heat generated over heat dissipated,
when the oil temperature rises from 850 C to 900 C, when passing through the
bearing. [16]

2. A crank shaft of the center- crank type is to be designed for a diesel engine devel-
oping 7.5kW on brake at 1200r.p.m. The crank shaft is of the forged type has to
carry two fly wheels of 500N each on either side of the main bearing. The plane of
rotation of each flywheel is 100mm from the center line of adjacent main bearing.
The maximum load on connecting rod is 35kN. The length of stroke of piston is
160mm and the length of connecting rod 320mm. Maximum torque will be expe-
rienced in the crank shaft when the crank turns 300 from the inner dead center
position. The maximum permissible stress in crank pin, web and shaft should not
exceed 60N/mm2 , the safe limit for the bearing stress for the crank pin and the
main bearings is 800N/mm2 . Design the crank shaft. [16]

3. (a) How the piston head of an IC engine is usually cooled? What are the advan-
tages of cooling ?
(b) A horizontal four stroke diesel engine has the following speciation:
Break Power =5kW
Speed = 1200 rpm
Imep = 0.35 N/mm2
Mechanical efficiency = 80%
Calculate the dimensions of the cylinder and the cylinder head. [6+10]

4. A Circular ring of rectangular section, with a slit is loaded as shown in the figure
4. Determine the magnitude of the force P if the maximum resultant stress along

the section a-b is not to exceed 150 N/mm2 . Draw the stress distribution along ab.

5. (a) With the help of sketches, discuss about the various types of belt joints.
(b) In an open flat belt drive; the pulley diameters are 300mm and 450mm, and
the corresponding angles of lap are 1600 and 2000 . The smaller pulley runs at
240 r.p.m. The coefficient of friction between the pulleys and belt is 0.3. It is
found that the belt is on the point of slipping when 5kW power is transmitted.
To increase the power transmitted; two alternatives are suggested, viz.,
i. increasing the initial tension by 15%, and
ii. increasing the coefficient of friction by 15%. Which of the above two
methods would be more effective? [4+12]

6. (a) Write the expression for static strength, limiting wear load and dynamic load
for helical gears and explain the various terms used.
(b) Two precision cut forged helical gears have 200 full depth involute teeth. The
angleof helix is 230 . Permissible static bending stress 100MPa, module 3mm,
face width 500mm. The speed of rotation of pinion 900rpm.gear ratio 5:1,sur-
face endurance strength 630MPa. Find the transmitted and wear load and
state whether the design is safe. [8+8]

7. (a) Explain the procedure of checking the design of a screw for buckling.

(b) A 50kN capacity screw jack consists of a square threaded steel screw, meshing
with a bronze nut. The nominal diameter is 70mm and the pitch is 10mm.
The permissible bearing pressure at the threads is 7N/mm2 . Determine
i. the length of the nut and
ii. the transverse shear stress induced in the nut. [6+10]

2. Design a mild steel connecting rod with an I section for a single cylinder spark
ignition engine from the following data :
Diameter of piston, D=0.104m
Weight of reciprocating parts =18.2N
Length of connecting rod from centre to centre=0.314m
Stroke length=0.14m
Speed of the engine=1500rev/min
Maximum explosion pressure = 2.28MPa gauge
Assume that the maximum thrust takes place at T.D.C. during the explosion stroke.

3. Design a trunk type cast iron piston for an I.C. Engine from the following data:
Diameter of the Cylinder = 10cm
Stroke = 15cm
Maximum explosion pressure = 3.5MPa
Maximum permissible tension for cast iron for the design of head thickness is 30MPa
and the flexural stress for the pin may be taken from 90 to120Mpa. The gudgeon
pin should be hardened and ground and should turn in phosphor bronze bushing.
Bearing pressure should be limited to 20MPa.
Sketch the piston inserting important dimensions of the piston with piston pin,
piston ring and scraper ring in position. Check the design from heat transfer view
point. [16]

4. Starting from fundamentals derive an expression for radius of neutral axis of a


rectangular cross- section curved beam. [16]

5. (a) On what factors, the design of belts depends?


(b) Select a suitable V-belt drive to connect a 7.5kW, 1440 rpm induction motor
to run a fan at approximately 480 rpm for a service of 16hrs per day. The
space available for centre distance is 1000mm. [3+13]

6. Design a pair of helical gears to transmit 50kW power at a speed reduction ratio
of 5:1. The input shaft rotates at 3000rpm. Take helix and normal pressure angles
equal to 25 degree and 20degree. Both pinion and gear are made of steel (the
following data is given)

7. A vertical square threaded screw of a 75mm nominal diameter and 10mm pitch,
supports a vertical load of 50kn. It passes through the boss of a spur gear of 72
teeth, which acts as a nut. For raising or lowering the load, the spur gear is turned
by means of a pinion having 24 teeth. The mechanical efficiency of the gear is
90%. The axial thrust on the screw is taken-up by a collar bearing having a mean
diameter of 110mm. The coefficient of friction for the screw and nut is 0.15, and
that for collar bearing is 0.12. Determine,

(a) the torque applied to the pinion shaft,


(b) the maximum (principal) shear stress induced in the screw, and
(c) height of the nut, if the permissible bearing pressure is 12MPa. [16]

8. Design the head stock gear box of a lathe having arrangement for 10 spindle speeds
ranging from 50 to 1000 rev/min. [16]
