Slaves to Chocolate

Cote d’lvoire, a country in West Africa where thousands of children are forced into
hazardous work conditions for the production of cocoa. Major chocolate companies such
as Hershey, Nestle and Cadbury agreed that they would stop the worst forms of child
labour in their cocoa supply chains. Instead of stopping the worst forms of child labour
they decided to support and fund programs that would blame the victims parents in
saying that the parents went wrong by having too many children that they cant support.
The parents of the child labourers had no choice as there are simply no schools, no
teachers, and no books for the children. What you can do to help ensure that you’re not
buying chocolate from the hands of a child labourer? Buy fair trade chocolate and
continue to demand that the major chocolate companies don’t buy from the child
laboured supply chains.

2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics

February 12, 2010 Vancouver British Columbia, Canada. The 2010 winter Olympics took
place with eighty-two different countries involved seven which were competing for the
very first time in the winter games. The games drew the largest crowd ever for the winter
games with more than 3.5 billion viewers worldwide. The start of the games had a rough
start where a 21 year old luge competitor from Georgia died on one of his practice runs.
After the death of the competitor the tracks starting line was lowered creating a shorter
distance and a lower maximum speed the competitors could reach. There was also
controversy during the 500 meter speed skating event where Apolo Ohno was
disqualified after a Canadian judged that Ohno caused another skater to crash. But the
issue was that the skater that Ohno supposedly caused to crash was a Canadian skater.
After the Olympics were finished the Russian team held just a total of 15 medals and
placed 6th overall in the medal count. The Russian president was enraged at not being in
the top 5 countries and called for the resignations of those responsible for preparing the
athletes. There was also notable victories in the games where Joannie Rochette won the
bronze medal for single ladies figure skating only two days after her mom passed away of
a heart attack. There was also the American snowboarder Shaun White who won his
consecutive gold medal on the half-pipe event and got a record setting score of 48.4 out
of the possible 50.

Earthquake in Chile

February 27, 2010 an 8.8 magnitude hit just off the coast of Chile that was just 33
kilometres under the surface which was followed by more than 100 after shocks with a
5.0 magnitude or more. By March 2 the official death toll was 551 people with 2,000,000
people displaced. The earthquake was so large that it was felt in Argentina and made
measurable wavelets and ripples in Lake Pontchartain just located outside of New
Orleans, Louisiana 7,600 kilometres north of the center of the earthquake. The Chilean
President sent 10,000 Chilean troops to the hardest hit areas to keep order and help with
rescue efforts. On March 11 a 7.2 magnitude aftershock struck the coast of Chile which
was the largest since the initial earthquake. Many countries went to the aid of Chile but
were initially declined by Chilean Officials. After the earthquake in May of 1960 Chile
put in a building code that required some form of “strong column weak beam” system
that would keep the building standing. Geologists indicated that for the magnitude of the
earthquake the plates moved less then expected. March 8 the United Nations Secretary-
General promised $10,000,000 in recovery efforts after donations from the public were
lagging after the earthquake in Haiti. The earthquake destroyed more then 200 of Chile’s
oldest churches and historical sites. Chile’s National Monuments Council requested that
the locals refrain from demolishing and clearing damaged buildings with historical
importance until the NMC could fully assess the damage and potential restoration of the
buildings.
