MATER-BI AND SECOND GENERATION MATER-BI

MATER-BI®

Mater-Bi®,

raw materials of agricultural origin are returned tothe soil

through biodegradation and composting

without the release of pollutants. In order to create

Mater-Bi®, Novamont had to work on the molecular

structure of maizestarch, complexing it with substances of
natural and/or synthetic origin in order to

increase its water-resistance and add structural properties.

Mater-Bi® comes in various

forms and grades and can be used in existing production

plants. Novamont produces and

markets a variety of polymers for different technologies

under the Mater-Bi® brand. The

material is available in granules, also in various forms and

grades.

All grades of Mater-Bi® have the following characteristics:

completely biodegradable in various environments: through

composting, or insoil, fresh and salt water

suitable for use with existing industrial technology for

traditional plastics, with nodrop in productivity

printable using standard inks and printing technologies,

without corona pretreatment

can be coloured using biodegradable masterbatches

intrinsic antistatic properties

Gamma-ray sterilisationMater-Bi is used in a variety of

sectors:

Agriculture: mulch film, nursery pots, ropes, ties and

devices for controlledrelease of active ingredients in
integrated pest management

Mass market retailing: biodegradable and compostable

carrier bags (recyclableas sorted collection bags for organic
refuse), thermoformed food trays, clingfilm

for fruit&veg packaging; extruded and woven netting,

disposable single use

tableware and cutlery, cotton buds, nappies, sanitary towels,

panty liners and

chew toys for pets

Catering: cutlery, plates, glasses, cups and take-away food
packaging

Waste Management: biodegradable and compostable organic

waste bags for usewith 6.5/10-litre kitchen waste bins,
30/120-litre outdoor bins and the aeratedsystem

with high breathability

Industry: hygiene and personal care (cotton buds, nappies,

sanitary towels, toiletrolls, serviettes and tissues, non-
woven fabric overalls), motor industry (Goodyear

tyres with bio-filler, a maize starch-derived material that can

be used as a partial

substitute for silica and carbon black), packaging (food and

expanded), pet

accessories e.g. chew toy bones, stationery (pens, pencil

sharpeners, rulers,

cartridges, toys, combs).

SECOND GENERATION MATER-BI

At the 4th European Bioplastics Conference (Berlin, 10-11

November 2009), Novamont

presented the second-generation of

Mater-Bi®, a wide range of grades for technicalapplications

in films and flexible coatings characterised by an

increased content ofrenewable raw materials, low levels of

greenhouse gas production and lower
dependence on raw materials of fossil origin

.Behind the second generation of Mater-Bi materials are not

only significant investments

in new facilities and new capacities but also the integration

of Novamont's starch-based

technology with the technology of polyesters obtained from

vegetable oils, both covered

by an extensive patent portfolio.
