Without a doubt, Jon Secada is one of the busiest 

and most successful artists of the past two 
decades. Eight years after releasing his last 
original Spanish album, "Amanecer", Jon is back 
with his new Spanish album "Otra Vez" (Once 
Again).  This is another great album with a 
professional blend of pop/Latin flavors.   You will 
"Get Crazy" with a selection of awesome and 
upbeat songs. You can also sit down, relax, and 
enjoy songs such as "Me Entrego" and "Para 
Olvidar". The voice of heart, soul and passion 
from our all‐ time favorite crooner is back.  "Otra 
Vez" is truly another wonderful piece of work by 
this multi‐Grammy winner, with hopes for 
another Grammy. “Otra Vez,” released on 
February 8, 2011, represents Secada’s highly‐  
anticipated return to both his Latin roots and 
R&B and pop styles that first jetted him to 
stardom. 

I had this opportunity to speak with Jon about his 
busy and successful 2010, "Otra Vez" and some 
other updates for the fans. 

Behnam : Thanks, Jon, for accepting this interview, which is always a pleasure for me.  

Jon : Same here Behnam, and thank you for the years of being there, loving my music, and having been a 
fan throughout the journey of my career. 

BM: 2010 was such a busy year for you, and your plate was full. You released the albums "Classics" 
and "Clásicos" while you were in the middle of promoting your Jazz album. Your long‐awaited "LIVE IN 
RIO" DVD was released. You were definitely busy with touring , the Mira Quién Baila (Look Who’s 
Dancing) TV show, kicking off Jon Secada Charities, and the "Secada's" lounge opening at the Magic 
City Casino in Miami, among others. That's a big list, man! 
JS : MQB was a big challenge for me. I've 
always felt that maybe dancing was, like, 
the biggest thing in my career in terms of 
what I feel comfortable with on stage. So 
I decided to do it and I danced in a lot of 
different styles that I've never done 
before.  While I was doing the show, it 
was a lot of fun.  It also was a very 
popular show and I learned a lot from 
the great choreographers, dancers and 
Latin artists. But you know my knee got 
hurt during the show with a torn 
ligament. I do feel a lot better now, and 
I'm back performing. I went to rehab and 
therapy and I am on my feet again. 

BM: You shocked everyone by being in such great shape in your late 40’s. You actually look better 
than you did 20 years ago. What's the secret to being healthy and staying in such good shape? 

JS: The secret is the usual thing. Working out with disciplines, trying to eat well, having a good life style 
and I’d like to keep it this way as long as I am able. 

BM : What did you learn from MQB? 

JS : I learned how to respect dancers. I always respect them, but even more now.  The show gave me the 
opportunity to really focus on my body only and nothing else, because I couldn't sing (laughs!).  It was a 
wonderful experience, and I'm happy that I did it. It was one of the few times in my career that I really 
felt nervous every week. The show meant a lot to me, even getting hurt. The things that I learned will 
stay forever. 

BM : Are you planning to use your dancing experience in your live performances? 

JS : I won't be able to do much dancing at that level that I was doing in MQB due to the torn ligament. 
For me to dance at that level of the show, I would have to have surgery, and I kind of don't want to do 
the surgery at this time. Nevertheless, I'm doing everything that I was doing before in my shows. 

BM :  How can you manage to take care of your family in such busy schedule? 

JS : As always for me it's about communication with my family and trying to stay involved,  and being in 
touch with them every day no matter what. As a father I'm trying to do whatever I can. Again 
communication is the number one key.  
BM : Let me congratulate you for the new wonderful album "Otra 
Vez". It is one of those few Latin albums that a listener does not 
need to even know a single Spanish word. The rhythms and your 
voice are more than enough to please the listeners. Why did it 
take eight years to release another original Spanish album and 
how did the recording of this album start? 

 
 

JS : It took me a while to put this CD together. Between being busy with Latin American Idol and some of 
the English recordings and Broadway shows, I couldn't focus on doing a Spanish pop album. Three years 
ago while I was doing the Latin American Idol show, I was able to think of many songs that I would like 
to start writing for it. It started with a set of songs that I wrote with Colombian writer, Jose Gaviria,  
whom I met during the TV show. Three songs ended up being on the CD, including the first single 
(Déjame Quererte), which is on Spanish radio in the US right now.  Little by little I got enthusiasm to do 
the rest of the record. I also wanted to have the right team to work with. I have a great production 
partner now. At this point it is released in North America and we are making connections with Latin 
America. So all the pieces fit well together and I think everything was the result of the Latin American 
Idol Show. 

BM: I like the title of the album which means "Once Again". It brings hopes and high expectations to 
the listener. Also the album cover reminds me your debut album in 1992. Can it be a big return for Jon 
Secada? 

JS : I really hope so Behnam. I think this CD is really Pop and probably the most pop CD that I have done 
in a while.  It has a lot of dance songs in it, including a remix of "Otra Día Más Sin Verte" (Just Another 
Day) as kind of a reminder for all my fans. The album is very high energy with a fusion of all kinds of 
flavors that I've always enjoyed.  

BM : You have done numerous versions of "Just Another Day," including one in this album. Which 
version of ”Just Another Day” is your favorite one? 

JS : Yeah, I have done this song in different ways. Probably at the end of the day, I still really enjoy the 
original version because spiritually and emotionally, that's how my career started and when I perform it 
live, it's based on the original. But I also enjoy the new versions of the song because maybe it's a good 
song which can be done in different musical styles. Probably the most aggressive dance remix is the one 
in “Otra Vez”.  

BM : The Portuguese version of the first single "Déjame Quererte" is also available on Stage Rio DVD 
in which you did a duet with Marina Elali. It's a great party song.  

JS : That was the first time that I performed it live with Marina. I have been living with that song for a 
while. I wrote it with Jose Gavidia in Colombia and this brought the whole album together.  
BM : You have recently released the music video for "Déjame Quererte". Many fans were wondering 
where this was recorded and who the actress is. 

JS : We did it in Miami, and the model was 
picked by the director, my production 
partner and myself. She really stood out 
among other candidates, and she looks 
great in the video. It was a fun video with a 
very aggressive rhythm. The video is trying 
to capture the fun part of the song, which 
is what it is all about. We did it in Secada's 
bar, at the Magic City Casino and also in 
different locations where I live.  It's a very 
Miami and home‐grown‐based video. 

BM : Tell us about your collaboration with different artists on this album, and how did you end up  
working with these young artists?  

JS : They came up in the process of pre‐production. I was working with Ricky C. and his production 
partner for writing songs. In the process of creating the track "Dimensions," each of us was singing a 
little bit of it, and we went with a duet version. I fell in love with it and decided not to change it. He is a 
great new young artist.  

It was the same with T Lopez.  While working in studio with my producer Randy (Barlow) and doing 
different demos, one of them was the track "Get Crazy". T Lopez is another great young artist and the 
song is a great fit for our voices.  

BM : Is "Dentro de Mí" the Spanish version of my favorite song "Someday" from the "Same Dream" 
album, which was written by you and  Miguel Morejon (co‐writer of "Just Another Day", "If You Go", 
"Angel", etc.)?  

JS : That's right. One of the songs that stayed in my memory as a must from when I did "Same Dream". I 
had done the Spanish translation of it, and I think no pop CD that I've done would be complete without a 
song with Miguel Morejon. This ballad means a lot to me. I have been living with this song for years.  

BM : The first thing I look at your albums is to see which ones you have written. Does this album 
present you as a songwriter, too? 

JS : Yes, as the songwriter I am 80% part of the whole CD. That's how my career started. This time I am 
looking at the bigger part of the production of the CD, especially that I'm the executive producer along 
with my new production partner.  
BM : Have you worked with any 
special songwriters or producers 
whom you would like to give credit 
to in this interview? 

JS : I'm very excited with some of the 
new writers that I met along the 
way. People like Ricky C and his 
producer Humby and Drago who 
wrote my upcoming second single 
"Me Entrego". I want to thank these   
individuals and so many others who 
contributed in this CD. 

BM : It is hard to pick a favorite song from this album. What a great song is "Para Olvidar"! I got 
connected to this one from the first second of it.  

JS : It's a great ballad. Jose Gavidia is a great writer. Again this record started with him.  

BM : Which song is your favorite  from "Otra Vez"? 

JS : That's a tough question. "Déjame Querete" has all the elements for me knowing and loving radio. I 
knew that this was by far the best choice. But in terms of ballads it will be "Me Entrego," which I wrote 
with Drago and Randy Barlow, and I think it has all the emotional lyrics and the melody that can make 
the impact.  

BM : You just got back from Puerto Rico and after more than 10 years you are going to perform  in 
Canada this month. I wish to welcome you here, and sorry for the cold Canadian winter.  

JS : (Laughs!), when I left Puerto Rico I knew that I would leave to some slightly cooler weather.  

BM : Any plan for other countries? 

JS : Absolutely!  We are doing a promotional plan for Mexico right now and we will take it from there 
little by little making our way to Latin America.  

BM : Jon, in less than a year you are going to celebrate the 20th year anniversary of your career. 
That's a big milestone.  

JS : My brother, every time I think about that I can't believe that as a solo artist, I would be in this 
business for 20 years , which does not including my songwriting career before that with Gloria Estefan 
and 6 years of teaching in college. I still love what I am doing, man. It's been a blast and hopefully I can 
keep doing that. 

BM : Do you have any special plan to celebrate it? 
JS : (Laughs!), well not really, I want to work and continue to be on the road, promoting this CD, doing 
concerts, and If I want to celebrate, I'll do the same way that I started, which is working really hard. I 
have such a great fan base. Thanks to really the streamline of people like you and Mark, which makes 
me really happy. It is a blessing for me and I can't believe that many people have been following my 
music for so long. 

BM : Any update on new season of Latin American Idol? 

JS : The show is done. I may do some other types of television in the future, because I really had a great 
time while doing Latin American Idol. So we are in the process of getting connected with TV once again. 

BM : We can't wait to see you performing at the Royal wedding. How is the negotiation on that going?  

JS : Hopefully that should be confirmed by the end of next week. It started with the relationship contact 
through my production partner with the No Problem Orchestra, which is an orchestra made up by 
developmentally challenged children in Austria. They were in the process of singing at the wedding and 
they have been fans of my music. Hopefully it will happen. 

BM : Finally, among all celebrities, you are still one of the few “humble” ones. Fans love your 
personality. How is it possible that your great success couldn't overcome your humble attitude? 

JS : Well Behnam I don't know, maybe because that's the way I was raised. At the end of the day, I just 
like to be with my family and also starting my career as a musician. I think those things have always 
helped me to stay grounded. And when I think that way, I feel very passionate and I always remember 
how it all began. 

BM : Jon, it is always great seeing you so busy, healthy, and successful after 20 years. I wish you great 
success on "Otra Vez".  Is there anything you want to add? 

JS : First I want to thank you and all the fans. Of course it's because of the connection that I have had 
with fans through the years by yourself and Mark that really charges me up. Thanks to all my fans and 
everybody out there for your support on so many different things that I've done in my career.  You guys 
were always there for me. Hopefully you will like my Spanish CD and upcoming shows.  It will be a busy 
2011‐2012.
