Elie Wiesel’s Night

JOURNAL RESPONSE ASSIGNMENT #2 CHAPTERS 4, 5, 6

(This is to be completed once you have submitted and received feedback on your first journal for chapters 1,2,and 3)

****You will be submitting two responses for each chapter****

THIS JOURNAL MUST BE A POLISHED SUBMISSION. IT MUST BE TYPED, DOUBLE-SPACED,

AND INCLUDE A COVER PAGE (follow the format in the on-line CCVI Communication Guide )

Part 1 – Reflective Response

After you read each chapter of Night, write a response to what you
have read. You may have to go back and re-read each chapter to make
sure you remember exactly what happens in that chapter. You will
submit three Reflective Responses, one for chapter 4, 5, and 6.

For your response, think about what details shocked, saddened, or

intrigued you. You can write about an emotional connection you made

interesting, even the way Wiesel chose to write about something.
Think about why he included certain conversations or descriptions.

Ask and try to answer the questions that you have as you are reading.
You can ask questions about plot, or writing style, or character
choices. You can ask ethical questions, or larger questions about the
Holocaust in general, but your effort to answer them yourself should
enhance your understanding. For this section, you should strive to
include specific details and refer to the text using page numbers
eg. (p 7) Make sure each response is 200 words.

Part II - Analytical Response

For each chapter, you also need to choose a passage, write out the passage, and analyze the significance of
it in a fully developed paragraph. If your passage is more than 5 lines long in the book, just write the first
line, then use an ellipsis (…) and write the last line. Be sure to include the page number of each passage.
The passage doesn’t have to be long, but you need to have something significant to say about it. Wiesel
does have the ability to convey great meaning through his tone and his choice of words, so make sure to
think about the words he is using to describe things. How does your passage contribute to your
understanding and appreciation of the passage. (200 words)

See attached rubric. Please read my comments on your assessed submission so you know how to improve
your assignment. Also note that this assignment has a different rubric, but the expectations are the same.
