Automakers rolling out smaller models

LOS ANGELES — The
small-car wars are on with
a vengeance.
New models from Ford
and General Motors will
challenge decades of Japa-
nese dominance this year.
Meanwhile, fast-grow-
ing Hyundai ratchets up
the pressure with the styl-
ish and advanced Elantra
compact and the upcoming
Accent subcompact.
And buoyed by its partner-
ship with small-car special-
ist Fiat, Chrysler promises
to join the 40-mpg club with
a replacement for the Dodge
Caliber late this year.
“Small-car sales have ris-
en every year since 2004
except 2009 and 2010, when
the recession affected every-
thing,” said Ford’s vehicle
development chief, Derrick
Kuzak. “We’re convinced
there’s an ongoing march
to higher small-car sales in
the United States.”
The newcomers target the
Toyota Corolla and Honda
Civic, America’s No. 1 and
No. 2 selling small cars in
2010, and benchmarks for
value and reliability.
“The age of the Toyo-
ta Corolla and the under-
whelming Civic concept Hon-
da unveiled at the Detroit
auto show open the door to
growth by Ford, Chevrolet
and Hyundai,” said inde-
pendent marketing con-
sultant Gordon Wangers

“The Civic and Corolla have

China auto imports nearly double in 2010

SHANGHAI — China’s
imports of foreign cars
nearly doubled last year,
with Japanese and Ger-
man models most in favor
among buyers looking to
upgrade their vehicles, an
industry association said
Tuesday.
The quasi-official China
Association of Automobile
Manufacturers said car
imports jumped 93 per-
cent last year from 2009
to 813,600 vehicles. By
value, imports doubled to
$30.64 billion, while Chi-
na’s vehicle exports rose
40 percent from a year
earlier to a record $51.8
billion.
An explosion in demand
and sluggish sales in the
recession-stricken West
helped China overtake
the U.S. as the largest car
market by sales of new
vehicles in 2009. Last
year, sales of passenger
cars, excluding large bus-
es, jumped by a third to
13.7 million vehicles.
While domestic-made
models of foreign joint ven-
tures dominate the mar-
ket, demand for higher-
quality imports remains
strong.
Imports of SUVs led the
market at 351,400 vehi-
cles, up 69 percent from
2009, while imports of
sedans more than dou-
bled to 343,700, the report
said. Imports also more
than doubled, to 89,900.

Q&A: Try cleaning valve before buying a new one

Q: I have a 2007
Dodge Grand Caravan
with the “check engine”
light on. I checked it
with a code reader
and got a P0404 code:
“Exhaust Gas Recircu-
lation Circuit Range/
Performance.” A new
EGR valve costs $80. Is
there any way to clean
or fix it and turn off
the light?
A: Notice that the
code does not say
“faulty EGR valve.”
The P0404 code indi-
cates the powertrain
control module is not
seeing the EGR sensor
performance or posi-
tion that it expects to
see. This could mean
a clogged EGR tube,
a faulty EGR sensor
or harness or a prob-
lem with the electron-
ic EGR valve itself.
There is no specified
service for these com-
ponents, but you could
remove the valve and
tube to inspect for car-
bon buildup that may
be blocking the f low of
recirculated exhaust
gases.
If the problem is
corrected, the check-
engine light may turn
itself off after a num-
ber of key cycles with-
out seeing the fault.
Otherwise, you would
need to use a scan tool
to reset the system.
Some auto-parts stores
offer code reading and
reset service at no
cost.
Q: I’m losing heat
from my 2000 Dodge
Durango. The heat
gradually decreas-
es until there is noth-
ing but cold air.
When the car idles,
the air gets cool and
then warms up when
I increase the rpm. I
took it to a mechan-
ic and explained the
problem. The shop
flushed the heater core,
replaced the timing
cover and installed a
new 195-degree ther-
mostat. The heater core
and water pump were
replaced within the
past two years. I am
still not satisfied with
the heat. What is the
next step?
A: Does the vehicle
lose or consume any
coolant? A cylinder
head gasket or intake
manifold gasket leak
may allow the coolant
level to drop enough
to introduce air into
the system. This could
stall the f low of cool-
ant, causing heating
f luctuations. A chemi-
cal test for the pres-
ence of exhaust hydro-
carbons in the coolant
might confirm a head
gasket issue.
An often-overlooked
potential cause is a
faulty radiator pres-
sure cap. If the cap
fails to hold pressure
— typically between
12 and 16 pounds per
square inch — coolant
can be pushed out of
the radiator and into
the recovery tank and
not be drawn back into
the system. Again, this
may allow air in the
system, slowing cool-
ant f low to the heater
core.

Q&A: No car can ‘run away’ with its driver in control

Q: I drive a 2009 Toy-
ota and have a fear of
a runaway vehicle. The
dealer has test-driven
the vehicle and told me
it’s OK. What advice do
you have?
A: Check with the
dealer to see if your
vehicle has been cov-
ered in any recalls or
technical service bul-
letins. More important-
ly — and this applies
to every car owner
and motorist — please
remember that a motor
vehicle cannot “run
away” or continue to
accelerate unintention-
ally if you simply shift
into neutral or turn off
the ignition key. Every
driver, regardless of
what vehicle they drive,
should practice these
simple procedures so
that their response will
be automatic.
Modern motor vehi-
cles will not “over-
rev” in neutral with
the throttle open. The
engine limiter will hold
the engine at about
4000 rpm by cycling
fuel delivery on and off.
So shifting into neutral
will disengage the vehi-
cle’s drive and accelera-
tion while maintaining
the power steering and
power brakes.
But even turning off
the ignition while driv-
ing will not disable the
steering or brakes. You
will lose power assist to
these systems, mean-
ing you’ll need to apply
more physical effort to
steer/stop the vehicle,
but the steering and
brakes will continue to
operate and allow you to
control the vehicle.
And finally, please
remember that you can-
not turn the key to the
“lock” position unless
the transmission shift
lever is in park — so
you cannot unintention-
ally lock the steering by
turning the ignition off.
Identify and practice
these simple procedures
to prepare yourself —
just in case.
Q: I own a 1999 Olds-
mobile Eighty-Eight
with 62,000 miles on
it that I bought new.
The last time I had it
inspected, the mechanic
indicated that the brake
lines are rusty and I
should think about
replacing them. What
are your thoughts?
A: Of all the things
that could possibly fail
on an automobile and
put the occupants at
risk, this may well be
the single most over-
looked potential fail-
ure. The steel hydrau-
lic brake lines typically
run underneath the
vehicle, where they are
exposed to road debris,
salt and sand. Just like
the chassis and body
of the vehicle, they can
rust when exposed to
these elements in harsh
climates.
Interestingly, steel
brake lines may be as
vulnerable to corrosion
from the inside due to
moisture absorbed into
the hydraulic brake flu-
id. This is why many
car makers, mechan-
ics and enthusiasts —
including me — suggest
changing brake fluid
every couple of years by
bleeding the brake sys-
tem to fully exchange
the fluid with fresh,
uncontaminated brake
fluid.
If you’ve never had
the brake fluid changed,
or the mechanic can
visually show you brake
lines with textured,
scaly or flaky corrosion,
by all means have them
replaced. No question
the cost of replacement
will be far less than the
cost and consequences
of brake failure while
driving.
Q: I have a 2003 Toy-
ota Camry with 89,463
miles on it. The auto
shop tells me I need to
replace the timing belt
at 90,000 miles. Is this
true? Is there any way I
would know whether it
is really needed? I am on
a fixed income, and this
is very expensive.
A: You didn’t identify
which engine is in your
Camry. The 2.4-liter
four-cylinder engine
uses a timing chain
that does not need peri-
odic replacement. The
3-liter V6 engine does
use belt-driven cam-
shafts, and Toyota rec-
ommends replacement
of the belt at 90,000
miles or 72 months.
Although this is not an
interference engine and
would not be damaged
by timing-belt failure,
you’ll know precisely
when it fails because
the engine will stop
dead in its tracks.

Chrysler hopes to rev up
comeback with new 300

Chrysler 300, once a
hot-selling sedan dis-
ting u ished by a ta ll
grille and big wheels, is
attempting a comeback.
It’s an important car in a
pivotal year for the com-
pany, which must start
making money before
a public stock sale can
happen.
The new 300, revealed
at the recent Detroit
Auto Show, keeps the
basic look of the old: It’s
a muscular car with a
long hood and short back.
But the remade version
is sleeker, and Chrysler
toned down the gangster-
mobile grille and replaced
its round headlamps with
subtle rectangular ones.
Gas mileage went up 8
percent and the interior
has softer-looking sur-
faces and cool-blue dash-
board lighting.
Chrysler wants it to
attract a broad range of
buyers, from those who
want a larger car to those
who seek high-perfor-
mance luxury.
Like the company that
builds it, the 300 used to
generate millions in prof-
its, but has been neglect-
ed for years. Introduced
in 2004, sales peaked
in 2005 at 144,000, but
barely topped 37,000 last
year. And just like the
reborn company, the big
car has the odds stacked
against it. Although the
new car’s gas mileage
went up 2 mpg on the
highway with a V-6, the
big car comes out at a
time when experts pre-
dict that gas prices could
reach $4 per gallon this
year.
Chrysler’s top-selling
The redesigns are
aimed at keeping
the company
going until newer,
more efficient
models with Italian
technology arrive in
the U.S. in the next
couple of years
models are Jeeps, pick-
up trucks, sport utility
vehicles and vans. And
despite an intense effort
to update or replace 16
outdated vehicles in
the past year, Chrysler
still lags competitors in
fuel economy. Its lineup
last year got an average
of 19.2 mpg, below the
expected industry aver-
age of 22.5 mpg, and far
below industry leader
Toyota Motor Corp. at
25.4 mpg.
Even Detroit rivals
who once relied on SUVs
and trucks as Chrysler
does, have shifted small-
er. Ford has introduced
the Fiesta and new Focus
in the past year, both of
which can get nearly
40 mpg on the freeway.
Chrysler’s small offer-
ings, except the Fiat 500
minicar, are in the low
30s.
“If we are looking at
$4 plus-gallon gasoline,
it’s got to nick their real
money makers,” said Joe
Phillippi, president of
New Jersey-based Auto-
Trends Consulting LLC.
“They run the risk of los-
ing sales to all other com-
petitors that have a big
stable of high fuel econ-
omy vehicles.”
