freewheeling diode Dm. Explain briefly two effects of
freewheeling diode in the circuit.
(ii) Describe the statement “Freewheeling diode improves the
power factor of the system” in terms of power electronics
application.
(8 marks)

(b) Figure Q2(b) shows a single phase half-wave controlled rectifier has a
resistive load of R = 10Ω, the voltage at the secondary transformer is
230V, and the firing angle of thyristor is 60o. Determine

(i) The expression of average and rms load voltage

(ii) The value of average and rms load voltage
(iii) Average and rms load current
(iv) Average output power
(v) the new firing angle, α. if the rectifier is connected to the load
which consumes 25% of the maximum possible average output
voltage
(vi) Draw the output voltage and current waveforms for the new
firing angle α

the transistor switching scheme is complementary bipolar. Determine:

(i) The amplitude of fundamental rms output current, Io1

(ii) The fundamental component of output current in function of

component
(6 marks)

(c) Design an inverter that will supply the series R-L load of R=10  and
L = 25 mH with a fundamental frequency and load current of 50 Hz
and 9.27A respectively. If at the beginning of designing stage, the
inverter has very high of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of load

analysis must be done up to 9th harmonic numbers.
(14 marks)

Q4 (a) A Buck-Boost Converter circuit has a DC input voltage source of Vs is

shown in Figure Q4(a). Assume all the components are ideal:

(i) Sketch the waveforms of VL, iL, iD, and iC of the converter during
ON-state and OFF-state conditions
(ii) Formulate the expression of inductor current ripple during ON-

(iii) Formulate the expression of the inductance to provide
continuous current mode (CCM) operation
(11 marks)

(b) The converter in Q4(a) is designed to produce an output voltage of -36
