unofficial and are based on an attempt to use standard classifications throughout all
navies; they may or may not correspond to "official" designations. Where two dates are
given (i.e. 1965/82), the first is the date of initial completion, and the second is the date
of acquisition, conversion, or transfer. Designations given in (parentheses) are assigned
but not displayed on the ship's hull.

Concept/Program: An improved Tarawa class ship; follow-on to the LHAs and

replacements for the LPHs. Properly should have been designated in the LHA series. The
secondary mission of these ships is sea control, with SH-60Bs and AV-8Bs. LHD 8 has
been added to the program by Congress; it will have gas turbine propulsion and possibly
other changes.

Builders: Northrop Grumman Ship Systems/Litton-Ingalls SB, Pascagoula, MS.

Design: Based on LHA with several changes; 5" guns eliminated, certain command
spaces moved from island to hull, docking well and elevators reconfigured, different
docking well gate, missiles re-arranged, additional cargo elevators, internal stowage for
ship's boats, SRS-1 Combat D/F system.

Concept/Program: Large carrier-like assault ships, combining the functions of LPH,

LSD/LPD, and LKA types, and serving as command ships. Extremely versatile, multi-
role ships. These ships are aging more quickly than expected, some life-extension work
has been done, but replacements are needed.

Builders: Litton/Ingalls SB, Pascagoula, MS.

Design: Large, bulky design with large flight deck and island; large cargo capacity. The
relatively short, wide docking well only provides space for 1 LCAC. Originally had 5"
guns at flight deck corners, and Sea Sparrow BPDMS launchers. Fitted with extensive
command and hospital spaces
Modifications: There have been some updates, but no comprehensive overhaul/life
extension work has been undertaken. All 5" guns and Sea Sparrow BPDMS have been
removed from these ships; RAM has been added. The radars associated with the 5" guns
were initially retained when the guns were removed, but the radars have now been
removed as well. Boat crane, boat deck and several boats are being removed to reduce
topweight.

Concept/Program: A new, large, highly capable LPD class intended to operate

independently or as part of an amphibious group (with an LHA/LHD and LSD).
Although nominally intended to replace LSTs, LKAs and LPDs decommissioned during
the 1990's, they will actually replace the existing LPDs and LSDs. The program has been
extensively delayed during the design phase.

Builders: Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, New Orleans, LA and Pascagoula, MS.

Design: Considerably larger than any previous LPD or LSDs; large cargo capability, and
major command capability. Stealthy design; designed for lower operating costs, and will
incorporate significant new technology. Will have large enclosed composite masts, with
radars housed internally. There is provision for a 16-cell VLS, but this will not be fitted.
The 30mm Bushmaster turrets are taken from the AAAV assault vehicle.

Concept/Program: This is the so-called "Cargo Variant" of the LSD 41 design; in

practical terms these ships are LPDs, not LSDs. This design trades docking well size for
cargo space. They were designated LPDX during the design stage, but designated LSD
when built; should have been numbered LPD 17-20.

Builders: Avondale SY, New Orleans, LA.

Design: These ships are essentially identical to the LSD 41 class except the docking well
is reduced by 50% in order to increase bulk cargo space by 800%. RAM launchers have
been fitted in all ships, and an improved self-defense combat system is to be fitted.

Concept/Program: LSDs built as replacements for the old Thomaston class ships;
primary design objective was transport of numerous LCACs.

Builders: Lockheed SB, Seattle, WA (LSD 41-43); Avondale SY, New Orleans, LA
(LSD 44-48).

Design: Developed from Anchorage class. These are the first diesel-powered LSDs.
Have a very long docking well with extensive ventilation to facilitate LCAC operations,
and large forward superstructure block. RAM launchers have been fitted in most ships,
and an improved self-defense combat system is to be fitted. LSD 47 is testing LPD 17
technologies and "Smart Gator" automation/manning-reduction systems.

Concept/Program: USN's second LPD class; essentially improved versions of the

pioneer LPDs. These are general-purpose ships and are employed both in groups and
independently. LPD 11 of this type was converted to a command ship, AGF 11. Proposed
SLEPs were cancelled, but the ships have continued in service; their electronics and
combat systems outfit is obsolete. These ships will be replaced by the LPD 17 class.

Builders: New York Naval Shipyard; Ingalls SB, Pascagoula, MS; Lockheed SB &
Construction, Seattle, WA.

Design: Typical LPD/LSD design; superstructure forward, boats, funnels and cranes
midships, helicopter platform aft. LPD 7-13 are fitted as flagships; they have an
additional bridge level. LPD 4 has no hangar.

Concept/Program: Large, highly capable multirole minesweepers/hunters, capable of

overseas deployment. They have suffered numerous technical problems, some of which
remain unresolved, and it is reported that maintenance is being badly underfunded. Four
are based overseas, the others in Texas.

Builders: Peterson Builders, Sturgeon Bay, WI; Marinette Marine, WI (MCM 2, 4, 7).

Design: Wooden-hulled minesweepers of relatively conventional design, equipped with

modern hunting/sweeping systems. Carry the SQQ-32 minehunting sonar, Mk116 mine
neutralization system with 2 SLQ-48 minehunting devices, SLQ-37(V)3
magnetic/acoustic sweep array, SLQ-38 mechanical sweep, and mine disposal divers.

Concept/Program: A group of patrol boats intended for SEAL/SpecOps transport and

support, but too large to effectively serve in that role. All boats have been assigned to
Coast Guard operational control, with Navy crews and Coast Guard boarding teams, for
homeland defense missions. Although the transfer is officially temporary, it seems likely
these vessesl will eventually be permanently transferred to the Coast Guard. In addition,
PC 1 was previously transferred to USCG but remains laid up for lack of sufficient crew
and operating funds.
