A short course on
Analysis of Composite Materials and Structures
by
Prof. J.N. Reddy
Distinguished Professor &
Oscar S. Wyatt Endowed Chair in Mechanical Engineering
Texas A&M University,
College Station, Texas.
USA

DATE :- 04-01-2011
TIME :- 09 :00 AM TO 04:00 PM
VENUE:
J.N.Tata Auditorium
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore – 560 012
BACKGROUND

The use of composite materials in a variety of engineering structures (e.g.,

aerospace, automotive, and off-shore and underwater structures, as well as in
medical prosthetics, electronic circuit boards, and sports equipment) and the number
of journals and research papers published in the four decades attest to the fact that
there has been a major effort to develop, analyze, and design composite material
systems with various functionalities. The subject of composite materials is truly an
interdisciplinary area where chemists, material scientists, chemical engineers,
mechanical engineers, and structural engineers contribute to the overall product. The
present one-day short course is primarily intended for structural engineers from
aerospace, civil and mechanical engineering as well as off-shore industries.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course is intended to provide engineers with the theory, analysis and design
considerations in dealing with composite structural components in the form of plates
and shells laminated of fiber-reinforced materials. Theoretical formulations and
applications will be presented to illustrate the concepts. Persons who have taken the
course and understood the material should benefit in strengthening their background
in the following areas:

1. General design considerations in dealing with composite materials.

2. Structural theories (classical as well as higher-order) governing the bending,
buckling and vibration behavior of plate and shell structures.
3. Analysis approaches based on conventional and least-squares finite element
models.
4. Failure of composite structures.
5. An overview of the research in nano-composites and multifunctional materials

The participants of the course must have a background in mechanics of materials

and structures and a course on differential equations (i.e., at least an undergraduate
degree in engineering is required).

COURSE OUTLINE
• Composite Materials: An Introduction
• Anisotropic Elasticity of Composite Materials
• Structural Theories of Composite Laminates (CLPT, FSDT, TSDT)
• Analytical Solutions of rectangular laminates for bending, vibration and buckling
• Finite Element Models of Composite Laminates
• Failures in composites: Post-buckling of laminated structures
• Recent advances: a new shell element and least-squares finite element models
• Nano-composites

COURSE MATERIAL
Much of the material used in the course from the instructor’s
book, Mechanics of Laminated Composite Plates and Shells (CRC
Press, 2004; second edition); other material will come the
research publications of the instructor. A copy of the overheads
will be provided to the registrants of the course.

Dr. Reddy is a Distinguished Professor and inaugural

holder of the Oscar S. Wyatt Endowed Chair in
Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University,
College Station, Texas. He is internationally-known for his
research on mechanics of composite materials and for
computational methods. Dr. Reddy is the author of over
410 journal papers and 16 text books on theoretical
formulations and finite-element analysis of problems in solid and structural
mechanics (plates and shells), composite materials, computational fluid
dynamics, numerical heat transfer, and applied mathematics. The books
authored by Dr. Reddy include: Principles of Continuum Mechanics
(Cambridge University Press, 2010, An Introduction to Continuum
Mechanics (Cambridge University Press, 2008); An Introduction to Nonlinear
Finite Element Analysis, Oxford University Press, 2004; An Introduction to
the Finite Element Method, McGraw-Hill, 1984 (3rd ed., 2006); Energy

Engineering, McGraw-Hill, 1986; Mechanics of Laminated Composite Plates
and Shells: Theory and Analysis, CRC Press, 1997 (2nd ed., 2004); and Theory
and Analysis of Elastic Plates and Shells, Taylor & Francis, 1999 (2nd edition
