AN EFFICIENT IMAGE FILTERING FOR GAUSSIAN NOISE REDUCTION USING

FUZZY TECHNIQUE
ABSTRACT
The Ultimate goal of restoration techniques is to improve an image in some predefined sense.
Although there are areas of overlap, image enhancement is largely a subjective process, while image
restoration is for the most part an objective process. Restoration attempts to reconstruct or recover an
image that has been degraded by using a prior knowledge of the degradation phenomenon. Thus
restoration techniques are oriented towards modeling the degradation and applying the inverse process in
order to recover the original image.
Image restoration scheme could be used to enhance satellite images. of course, since the original
image is already corrupted by noise, it is not possible to obtain a numerical measure which indicates how
“good” the image is. Depending On the application (The goal of this thesis work is to design an efficient
image filter for Gaussian Noise Reduction e.g., Visual inspection, Segmentation), one could prefer lighter
or heavier filtering.
Gaussian Noise Reduction is mainly focused here. The Gaussian noise may occur in many
practical cases. The Gaussian model is most often used for natural noise processes, such as those
occurring from electronic noise in the image acquisition system. This electronic noise is most problematic
with poor lighting conditions or very high temperatures. The Gaussian model is also valid for film grain
noise, if photographic film is part of the imaging process.
Some Restoration techniques are best formulated in the spatial domain, while others are better
suited for the frequency domain. For example, spatial processing is applicable when the only degradation
is additive noise. Here the focus is on Gaussian noise reduction and it is an additive noise by nature. So
spatial processing is done here.
Normally the Noise in an image is fuzzy in nature. So the fuzzy technique is applied for filtering
Gaussian noise from images. Many Fuzzy based techniques are developed but are not spe cifically
designed for Gaussian noise. Several Techniques in image noise reduction mainly deal with impulse
noise.
In this thesis work, the fuzzy based filtering technique for Gaussian noise reduction are analyzed
and it is found that fuzzy image filter is a good filtering technique for Gaussian noise reduction and also
for edge preserving. But this filter is not well suit for high noise level reduction. So this fuzzy filter is
modified to suit as an efficient filter for Gaussian Noise Reduction with high noise level.
The Fuzzy image filter which reduces the Gaussian noise in the image with low noise level and it
also preserved the image structure such as edges better than other filtering techniques. But it does not
estimate the noise for high noise level efficiently. It estimates the noise for low noise level better.
The New Fuzzy Image Filter is a technique used for Gaussian Noise Reduction with high Noise
Level. It takes the advantage of fuzzy Image filter. Two Important Features in the fuzzy Image filte r as
follows:
 The Filter Estimates a “Fuzzy Derivative” in order to be less sensitive to local variations due
to image structures such as edges.
 The Membership functions are adapted according to the noise level to perform “Fuzzy
Smoothing”

The Adaptive Threshold selection in the fuzzy image filter is modified to achieve filtering on
high Gaussian noise level by applying new formula by using already existing method of finding variance
and mean in an image.
The Modified Adaptive Threshold Selection yields a better result in filtering. It also selects
approximate noise level. It is also shown in the table by comparing with existing method.
The Experimental results shows a better result when Gaussian noise level is higher. It also shows
minimum mean square error when compared with other filtering Techniques.
