NFPA 13 – 2013 Edition
Even though the 2010 edition of NFPA 13 has only been out
one year, the sprinkler industry does not stand still. Already the
revision cycle for the 2013 edition is cranking up and proposals are
being received at NFPA for the sprinkler committees to consider.
This presentation will provide a look ahead at some of the major
topics that the sprinkler committees will be considering during this
upcoming cycle. It will include all three sprinkler standards.

Modification to Data Sheet 8-9
In 2010, FM Global combined the sprinkler installation guidelines
from Data Sheets 2-2 (Suppression Mode Sprinklers), 2-7 (Control
Mode Specific Application Sprinklers) and 2-8N (Control Mode Density
Area Sprinklers) into Data Sheet 2-0, Installation Guidelines for
Automatic Sprinklers. Besides providing guidelines focused solely on
the installation of automatic sprinkler systems, this new data sheet
incorporated the new terminology of Storage, Non-Storage and
Special Protection Sprinklers now being used by FM Global. Also in
2010, a new version of FM Global Data Sheet 8-9, Storage of Class
1, 2, 3, 4 and Plastic Commodities, was released. With the change
in sprinkler terminology from Suppression Mode, Control Mode
Specific Application (CMSA) and Control Mode Density Area (CMDA)
sprinklers to Storage sprinklers, coupled with the combining of Class
3 protection options with Class 1 and 2 as well as combining Class
4 along with cartoned unexpanded plastics, the number of protection
tables was able to be reduced from 42 down to 10. Flexibility and
simplicity was further introduced with the elimination of storage height
and aisle width as a design parameter. This seminar will discuss the
major changes that were incorporated into Data Sheets 2-0 and 8-9, We’re Going Green

Weston C. Baker, Jr.
AFSA is working to reduce the amount of paper we use
at our convention. This is an effort both to be responsible
toward our environment and to increase the quality and
timeliness of the resources provided through this learning
experience. However, we do know that completely replacing
paper altogether can make the learning experience difficult
for some, which is why this program will be light on paper,
rather than completely paper-free. Electronic program
materials and handouts will replace most paper
resources and will be accessible online before, during
and after the convention on the AFSA Web site.

So You Think You Know NFPA 13?

This seminar will help sprinkler designers and estimators uncover
some of the overlooked items in NFPA 13. Using the document on
a daily basis, sometimes the user can misread, misunderstand, or
even misapply some sections of the standard. An attempt will be
made to present some commonly overlooked items. A Q&A session
and discussion will be utilized to compare interpretations of these
overlooked items. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the
actual requirements and intent of NFPA 13. The 2010 edition will be
used as the reference.

2010 NFL Football Season Celebration

No matter who your favorite NFL team happens to be, you will be fascinated
with a visit to Gillette Stadium. Take a behind the scenes tour of the stadium
and feel what it is like to be a true NFL football star. The tour is lead by
trained tour guides who will take you on a private trip down to the New
England Patriots playing field where you are encouraged to take plenty of
pictures! During this time, your dedicated tour guide will also discuss fun
facts of the stadium, ownership, the team and game days. In addition to the
sidelines, you will be able to enter the visiting team locker room, where it will
be set up with real NFL equipment—that can be tried on for size! Pending
Availability. Then walk over to The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon
where authentic New England Patriot Super Bowl rings are displayed for all to
see. The Hall is a modern “museum” that takes guests through Patriots and
New England football history in a cutting-edge way, utilizing amazing video
and audio to tap into fans’ emotions in a manner never before seen in a sports museum. If that’s not enough to wet your football appetite,
you will have the opportunity to learn the playbook from three-time Super Bowl champion head coach Bill Belichick, go under the hood and
review plays like an actual NFL official, go inside a huddle and listen to Tom Brady call plays, and compare your vertical jump to Lawrence
Maroney’s and your weight to Vince Wilfork’s. You’ll also block Tedy Bruschi, stand inside a duck boat used in the Super Bowl XXXVI parade,
kick a field goal on the virtual football field, and listen to never-before told stories from past Patriots and Patriots’ fans in the state of the
art Raytheon Theater, which shows the Patriots signature film, highlighting extraordinary moments in team history. The Hall at Patriot Place
includes memorabilia from not just the New England Patriots but teams from all over the country. Return to the Fidelity Investments Clubhouse
where you can enjoy lots of food, drinks and music. Take a photo with some of the New England Patriots Cheerleaders. Be where your favorite
NFL team takes on the New England Patriots for their chance to play in the Super Bowl. If you are a New England Patriot fan, be right where
the action takes place when your team takes themselves one step closer to another super bowl win. This is an evening you won’t soon forget!

Like much of New England...

Rhode Island is notable for the great variety of its natural
beauty, cultural offerings, & social history. To people who have
not spent much time in the Ocean State, the first images to
arise might be its fabulous Gilded Age mansions, its legacy of
12-meter yachting, or its famed jazz, folk, and classical music
festivals. Other well-known images of Rhode Island are its long,
sandy beaches along the Atlantic and Narragansett Bay, and
the revitalized cultural jewel that is Providence, its capital city.
